CMA CGM Invests in Brittany Ferries

CMA CGM Group, a shipping and logistics giant, has agreed to make a €25 million investment, including €10 million in quasi-equity, in Brittany Ferries, the largest ferry company operating under the French flag, to support Brittany Ferries’ post-Covid-19 recovery.Brittany Ferries said the partnership would help to unlock synergies between the two companies in passenger and freight transport. "By harnessing the respective areas of expertise of the CMA CGM Group and Brittany Ferries, it will also help promote the development of cross-Channel shipping and underpin France’s position in the sector.

Baleària Vessels to Be Certified as COVID-19 Safe

Shipping line Baleària says it is working toward being the first in the world to obtain the Global Safe Site COVID-19 badge at the highest level (Excellence) from certification and inspection body Bureau Veritas, certifying that its ships and the ferry terminals that it manages implement specific procedures, cleaning plans, organizational and personal protective measures to prevent COVID-19. Shanghai International Port Group Buys Kalmar Equipment

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has secured an order to supply 15 units of container handling equipment to Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG).This order, including a total of 4 units of Reachstackers and 11 units of Empty Container Handlers, has been booked into the Cargotec 2018 second quarter order intake. Delivery of the machines is scheduled to take place in the third quarter of 2018.Founded in 2005, Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd. is the largest joint-stock port operator in China. Chittagong Port Strike Postponed

The Prime Mover-Trailer Owners Workers Unity Council of Chittagong Oikya Parishad has postponed their ongoing strike till October 4 at Chittagong Port. This has ended the deadlock in goods transportation at the sea port for the time being. The strike has created largest ever gridlock of containers in the recent history of Chittagong port. A total of 40,259 TEUs of containers were stockpiled at the port exceeding 36,357 TEUs capacity. The decision was taken on Friday (September 30) morning after the meeting that held with the participation of Workers secretary of the organisation Mohammad Humayun Kabir and Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner Iqbal Bahar.

Driving the Inland Waterways

Propulsion evolves, improves and powers forward in the inland markets. And, Z-Drive propulsion is the future. Hapag-Lloyd Improves Safety of Dangerous Goods Transportation

Last year, Hapag-Lloyd discovered 2,620 cases of incorrectly declared dangerous goods that were prevented from being shipped. Dangerous goods experts at Hapag-Lloyd investigated over 162,000 suspicious cases which were recorded using a newly developed watchdog software. FMC Commissioner Doyle Announces China VAT Issue Webcast

New explanation issued from China on definition of “agents” in Circular 106. Industry briefing scheduled for March 6, 2014 concerning the latest information on China’s Value Added Tax regime and its impact on the maritime industry. Commissioner William P. Doyle of the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) today announced that he will be participating in a webcast that will take place on March 6, 2014, on matters related to China's Value Added Tax (VAT) regime, with specific emphasis on China's release of Circular 106, as it affects carriers, shippers and ocean transportation intermediaries. Professionals from the global audit and tax firm, KPMG, will host the webcast. Commissioner Doyle stated, "I appreciate KPMG's willingness to provide a briefing on China's VAT program to FMC’s stakeholders.

Commissioner Doyle: China Clarifies VAT

Last week Commissioner William P. Doyle of the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) briefed the full Commission with a report on his work seeking clarity and certainty on the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC’s) implementation of the Value Added Tax (VAT) as it relates to maritime commerce. Doyle informed the Commission that the Chinese government was expected to clarify its position on the VAT that has confused the shipper and carrier communities. On December 13, 2013, the PRC released Circular 106, which supersedes Circular 37 effective January 1, 2014.
