All-electric Ferries Depart Damen Shipyards Galati for Ontario, Canada

A pair of fully-electric road ferries are now on their way from Damen Shipyards Galati to Lake Ontario, Canada, to begin operations. Ontario Accepts Damen’s Electric Ferry Proposal

The Government of Ontario has accepted Damen’s proposal to build two ferries with full electric propulsion. Damen is building a 68-meter Road Ferry 6819 and a 98-meter Road Ferry 9819 to operate in the Canadian waters of the Great Lakes. The vessels will be the first fully electric, non-cable vessels in Canada. As part of the tender process for the contract to build the ferries, Damen was required to identify future innovations and green technologies for sustainable power solutions. The Government of Ontario has accepted Damen’s electrification proposal.

The Government of Ontario has signed a contract with Damen Shipyards Group for the design, build and delivery for two “road” ferries to operate in the Canadian waters of the Great Lakes from 2019 and 2020. The new ferries will be a 68-meter Damen Road Ferry 6819 and a 98-meter Damen Road Ferry 9819, both designed in-house by Damen and fully customized for the local infrastructure. Although one vessel is 30 meters longer than the other, they will share many design features and equipment specifications, and both will be hybrid-ready, enabling them to be fitted with batteries when required.
