ICS Chairman on Implementation of Global Sulphur Cap

“Time is fast running out” for implementation by IMO Member States of the 0.5% global sulphur in fuel cap by 1 January 2020, says Esben Poulsson, Chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS). The IMO global sulphur cap for marine fuel is expected to see shipping’s bunker prices increase significantly. “While ICS fully supports the objectives of the IMO cap, the overnight introduction of this regulatory game-changer will have enormous implications for ship operations. In the absence of agreed standards for new fuels including blends, that will be compliant with the 0.5% sulphur limit but which may differ in their composition from port to port, ICS is very concerned this could lead to serious compatibility and mechanical problems.

ASNE to Host Blue Green Sustainability Symposium

The American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) Blue Green Sustainability Symposium is an inaugural event highlighting emerging technologies and solutions to meet the modern challenges of environmental consciousness in the maritime industry. Blue Green 2014, held October 1-2 at the Kitsap Conference Center in Bremerton, Wash., will focus on energy efficiency, reductions in discharges and emissions, and environmental safeguards for port facilities and ships at sea. According to the  organizers, Blue Green 2014 will attract prominent guest speakers, panelists and paper presentations from industry, academia, Navy, Coast Guard and government officials.

New Vice President for AIRTO

Peter French, AIRTO Vice President

Peter French, Chief Executive of BMT Group, has been appointed by the Board of AIRTO to the role of Vice President, with immediate effect. Peter has served as BMT’s Chief Executive since 2005, and has served on the AIRTO Board as a Director since March 2007. BMT Group, which is has an annual turnover of £142million, is an international design, engineering and risk management consultancy, working principally in the defence, energy and environment, marine risk and insurance, maritime transport and ports and logistics sectors. BMT has been a long standing member of AIRTO having joined in 1986.

MarAd Administrator Schubert to Address Security Council Conference

One of the nation's most comprehensive forums on all aspects of supply chain security since last fall's terrorist attacks, will be held from June 13-15 in Scottsdale, Ariz. Entitled "Securing Assets in the Global Supply Chain: People, Property, Products and Services," the annual conference of the National Cargo Security Council will bring together many of the nation's leading security experts from major shippers, government policy makers, and security solution providers. President Opposes USCG Funding

On August 13, the President hosted the President's Economic Forum at Baylor University in Waco, Texas which brought together government policy makers, small investors, small business owners, industry experts, teachers, workers, business ethicists, union members, corporate executives, economists, business students, academics, researchers and others to discuss the fundamentals of the economy and the President's agenda to increase economic growth for the future. The Forum featured breakout and discussion sessions on key economic issues. Each session involved approximately 30 participants with diverse points of view, panels and was chaired by a senior government official, and each panel included guest speakers with special expertise in the panel's subject matter.
