Radio Holland Wins Contracts for Canadian Coast Guard Vessels

Radio Holland Canada has won two major contracts to support the Canadian Coast Guard. Public Works and Government Services Canada, which is responsible for government procurement, has awarded Radio Holland Canada a multimillion dollar contract to supply Furuno ECDIS and radars for the Canadian Coast Guard fleet over the next five years. In a separate agreement Hike Metal Products of Wheatley, Ontario has contracted Radio Holland to supply the Navigation & Communication equipment for six new Canadian Coast Guard Search and Rescue Lifeboats.

Vancouver Shipyard Starts Building First NSPS Vessel

The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada, joined by Andrew Saxton, Member of Parliament for North Vancouver and John Weston, Member of Parliament for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country, announced that Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards (VSY) has started construction on the first National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS) ship, the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG)’s Offshore Fisheries Science Vessel (OFSV). It was also announced that the first ship will be named CCGS Sir John Franklin in honour of a British Royal Navy officer and explorer of the Arctic. Irving Shipbuilding has partnered with Women Unlimited to provide education funding and job opportunities to 20 women who will participate in the welding and metal fabrication program at the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) Akerley Campus. The partnership is an outcome of Irving Shipbuilding's Centre of Excellence funding announced in October 2012. The mandate of the Centre of Excellence is to provide Nova Scotians, with particular focus on under-represented Nova Scotians, with applicable programs and training to optimize opportunities to work in the marine industry.

Irving Shipbuilding Update

In a technical briefing with media in Ottawa this morning, representatives from Public Works Government Services Canada, the Canadian Navy and Irving Shipbuilding provided an overview of the Arctic Offshore Patrol ship program including the ship’s design and capability, the number of ships to be built and the construction schedule. The spokesman in his brief informed: We look forward to celebrating this important milestone – the awarding of a build contract - with our employees, our community and Canada in the coming weeks at the Halifax Shipyard. Since June of 2012 we have been maturing the design with the Canadian Navy to make sure it provides the capability required by those who bravely serve.

Seaspan Begins First NSPS Build

Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards has started construction on two initial blocks for the first National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS) ship, the Canadian Coast Guard’s Offshore Fisheries Science Vessel (OFSV), the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada, announced. “We are thrilled to begin initial block construction on the OFSV and are grateful that Minister Finley is here to celebrate this milestone moment with us," said Brian Carter, President – Seaspan Shipyards.

Canada Patrol Boat Construction Project Pushes Forward

The Canadian Government has released funds with a potential value of $53.5 million to Irving Shipbuilding to pay for tasks connected with the construction of the Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS) under Canada’s National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS). •             The definition contract is a task-based contract divided into seven work packages (or tasks) that will enable Irving Shipbuilding Inc. to have full designs and requirements established for the Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ships before building. Plans remain on track to cut steel and begin construction in 2015.

Seaspan to Build Another 10 Noncombat Vessels

Diane Finley, Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada, joined by James Moore, Minister of Industry and Regional Minister for British Columbia, announced that Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards will build an additional 10 Noncombat vessels for the Canadian Coast Guard. The new ships, confirmed during Minister Finley’s visit to the Shipyards, increase Seaspan’s noncombat build package to 17 ships from the seven originally announced on October 19, 2011. These additional ships include five medium endurance multitasked vessels (MEMTVs) and five offshore patrol vessels (OPVs).

Irving Pumps $300m into Halifax Shipyard for Naval Builds

Irving Shipbuilding announced several contract awards today for Nova Scotia and Canadian suppliers as part of part of the Halifax Shipyard Modernization Program, a two-year engineering and construction investment to prepare the company’s facilities to build Canada's future combatant ships. Site preparation and preliminary construction is well underway, with major demolition and construction to begin soon. To date a total value of $127.7 million in contracts have been awarded.

Irving Progresses AOPS Design, Prepares 2015 Construction

Irving Shipbuilding welcomed Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada, and Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defense, to Halifax Shipyard to mark the start of the Definition (Design) phase of work for the first set of new naval combat vessels for Canada, the Arctic Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS). Under the Definition Contract Irving Shipbuilding will refine and complete the AOPS vessel design to the high degree of detail for Canada and for those who will cut steel, assemble, complete and test the ships, as well as complete various phases of design review, analysis and testing, plan how to integrate all of the complex systems and equipment on the ship and do detailed cost estimates for the build phase of the project…

Canada Commissions Maritime Pollution Risk Study

Harper government announces pan-Canadian risk assessment study on marine safety. The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced that Transport Canada, in collaboration with the Canadian Coast Guard and Environment Canada, is commissioning a pan-Canadian risk assessment study on readiness to respond to ship-source spills in Canadian waters. “Our government is working to protect the safety of Canadians and the environment,” said Minister Lebel. “Canada depends on marine shipping for jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity.

Northrop Grumman Awarded In-Service Support Contract

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has been selected by Canada's Department of National Defence (DND) to provide in-service support for the MK-49 inertial navigation systems and navigation data distribution systems fielded aboard surface ships and submarines of the Royal Canadian Navy. The $12.1 million contract, awarded by Public Works Government Services Canada, includes material spares and software maintenance for the next five years. This is the fourth in-service support contract that Northrop Grumman has received from the DND since 2001.

GE Renews Royal Canadian Navy Contract

GE Marine renewed a contract with Public Works and Government Services Canada to provide maintenance and logistics support services. The three-year contract renewal covers the Royal Canadian Navy’s (RCN) fleet of LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbines that power Halifax-class patrol frigates. The original five-year contract with Public Works and Government Services Canada began in 2001, and was renewed in 2006 for an additional five years. As a result of the contract with GE, the RCN can dedicate resources to other equipment and maintenance tasks.

Dominis Engineering Wins Contract

Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) has awarded a multi-year contract for the manufacture and supply of propeller blades for the Canadian Patrol Frigates (CPF) to Dominis Engineering Ltd. of Ottawa. The contract calls for the supply of two ship-sets, with an option for the third set, for a total of 30 propeller blades. Dominis IPMS (Integrated Propeller Manufacturing System) uses the company's proprietary technology for CNC milling of sculptured surfaces to final form. This manufacturing system is used in the production of propeller blades, monoblock propellers, hydraulic turbines, turbine blades and impellers. Sperry Marine to Equip INS for Canadian Navy Ships and Subs

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been awarded two contracts from the Public Works and Government Services Canada and the Canadian Department of National Defence to upgrade and provide in-service support for the inertial navigation systems (INS) on Canadian Navy ships and submarines. The firm fixed price contracts, totaling $15.9m, were awarded to Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine business unit. They include an $11.8m contract to supply navigation data distribution systems (NDDS) for the MK49 INS on 12 Halifax-class frigates, and a separate five-year $4.1 million in-service support (ISS) contract for MK49, MK39 and NDDS installations throughout the Canadian Navy fleet.

GE Renews Canadian Navy Contract

GE Marine announced it recently renewed a contract with Public Works and Government Services Canada to provide maintenance and logistics support services. The five-year contract covers the Canadian Navy's fleet of LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbines that power Halifax-class patrol frigates. As a result of the contract with GE, the Canadian Navy has also witnessed decreased administrative functions such as procurement, inspection and technical support, and material and inventory management associated with the LM2500. Backed by GE's extensive network of global field service technicians, the Canadian Navy has access to GE service located throughout the globe, providing immediate on site technical support.

NovAtel Inc. Awarded Contract for Study

NovAtel Inc. was awarded a $142,000 (CDN) contract by Public Works & Government Services Canada for an Interoperability study on the receiver requirements for Galileo. Galileo is the European Union's state-of-the-art Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), which is expected to be fully operable by 2008 with up to 30 satellites orbiting the earth. This contract, sponsored in Canada by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), focuses principally on both GPS and Galileo receiver requirements and system performance. NovAtel will study the requirements for a combined GPS/Galileo receiver. The University of Calgary, also located in Calgary, Canada, will work under a subcontract to NovAtel to analyze the performance of the system using system constellation modeling techniques.
