Ex-USS Taylor (FFG-50) was towed from Philadelphia Naval Shipyard to Detyens Shipyard in Charleston, S.C. where the vessel will be converted in preparation for delivery to the Taiwanese government as part of the U.S.’ foreign military sales program. The 33-year-old Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate was decommissioned at NS Mayport, Fla. in 2015, where it had been homeported since 1993. During its service, Taylor, named for Cmdr. Crowley Maritime Corp. has formalized two new groups, Government Services and Global Ship Management, in a move that aims to better streamline its offerings to the growing government services sector and to continue expanding its global ship management business. Crowley Maritime Corp.’s government services group has been awarded a $130 million technical management contract for five U.S. government-owned, Military Sealift Command (MSC) Roll-On/Roll-Off and container ships (ROCON). The contract will see Crowley provide full turnkey operation and management of the fleet, including crewing and scheduled/unscheduled repair and drydocking services initially for one year with four, additional one-year options. The turnover phase for the ships began on October 1. Of the five ships, two will remain berthed in Jacksonville and three will be homeported in Norfolk – all within the service area of Crowley’s local offices. This contract will have a positive economic impact through the creation of several new jobs in both Jacksonville and Norfolk.

Gibbs & Cox, Inc., an independent naval architecture and marine engineering firms, announced the appointment of Frank DeMasi to Deputy Director of its Government Services Group. In this role, DeMasi will carry out  initiatives to expand the group's core expertise to provide life cycle design and engineering support services that meet the evolving needs of U.S. naval and maritime defense customers. DeMasi, a former Naval Captain, served in the U.S. Navy for 29 years, and has also worked for ten years as SAIC's Vice President and Deputy Operations Manager of the Defense Engineering and Management Solutions operation.

Amid the doom and gloom which has become revenue reporting season, it is refreshing to note that L-3 Communications reports that first quarter of 2002, sales were $696.8 million, an increase of 50.9% over sales of $461.9 million in the first quarter of 2001. 52.0%. American Marine Holdings, Inc (AMH) Government Services experienced a record year in sales during 2004, according to Mike Collins, President. AMH, the parent company of Donzi Marine and Pro-Line Boats, formed the Government Services Group in 2003. Mr. Collins stated, ”I am extremely proud of the team we have assembled. John Hotz has been instrumental in our success and was just appointed Vice President of the group”. The past year marked a flurry of activity for the Government Services division, along with many new additions to the team. Mike Page, former United States Navy Lieutenant with the Special Boat Teams, and formally with Boston Whaler and Night Vision Technologies joined the group and now heads up International and Military sales.

President George W. Bush intends to nominate Michael Jackson, of Virginia, to be Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security. Mr. Jackson currently serves as Chief Operating Officer of AECOM Technology Corporation, Government Services Group, in Fairfax, Virginia. From 2001 to 2003, he served as Deputy Secretary of Transportation at the Department of Transportation. Earlier in his career, he held several positions at Lockheed Martin IMS, Transportation Systems and Services, including Vice President and General Manager of Business Development and Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Jackson received his bachelor's degree from the University of Houston and his Ph.D. from Georgetown University.
