China to Cut Steel Capacity by 2025

China will shut down more outdated steel plants and bring total capacity to less than 1 billion tonnes by 2025, the president of the country's steel industry association said, adding that national demand for the metal is set to decline gradually. With more than three quarters of firms suffering losses as a result of a price-sapping capacity surplus, China vowed in early 2016 to shut 150-150 million tonnes of annual production in five years in a bid to raise profitability and utilisation rates in the sector. Its capacity then was estimated at 1.2 billion tonnes.

Ark Shipping Takes Delivery of AHTS Vessel

A new shallow-draft anchor-handling tug supply (AHTS) vessel has been delivered to Russian inland waterways operator and offshore logistics service provider, Ark Shipping. The AHTS Antarctic, designed by Offshore Ship Designers (OSD) in close cooperation with the owner, is partly based on the design of another OSD-designed ship, the Arctic, which was delivered to Ark Shipping in 2012. The DP1 vessel has a Bureau Veritas Ice Class Notation, and is fully equipped to operate in the Caspian Sea, where ice formation of around 80 cm during the winter period is not unusual.

China Iron Ore Output at 20-month High

China's iron ore output jumped in June to its highest level since October 2015, data showed on Wednesday, the strongest sign yet that soaring prices have spurred miners in the world's top consumer of the steelmaking raw material to boost production. Output rose 5 percent from a year ago to 124.7 million tonnes, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed. Prices have been on a tear in recent months as steel mills have churned out record volumes of metal, taking advantage of bumper margins. Beijing's infrastructure spending has boosted optimism about demand for construction-grade steel.

MPI Resolution's leg Extensions Completed

Following the announcement of 24 October 2016, MPI Offshore has stated that the leg extensions to MPI's wind-turbine installation vessel (WTIV), MPI Resolution, are now in place, class approved and fully operational. The upgrade work took place over an intense 60-days conversion programme working 24/7. A multi-skilled group of workers peaking at around 50 personnel, included specialists for welding high-grade steel and performing onsite machining operations, all positioned at the top of the existing legs. six legs. Kangnam To Build Minesweepers Ships in India

South Korea's Kangnam Corporation will jointly build 12 mine countermeasure vessels (MCMV) in India in collaboration with India's state-owned Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), reports Hindustan Times. The project comes under under the Modi government’s Make in India programme and is likely to cost more than Rs 32,000 crore ($4.8 billion). “We are in the final stage of concluding the contract. It should be done in three to four weeks,” Hindustan Times quoted GSL chairman Rear Admiral Shekhar Mital as saying. The navy needs to fill gaps in its mine warfare capability. Its existing mine counter-measures force consists of six vessels bought from the erstwhile Soviet Union in the late 1970s. It requires 24 minesweepers.

IPS Completes Two Ferry Deals for Stena Line

Birkenhead based IPS Marine Fabrications is continuing to ramp up growth in the passenger ferry market after completing work on two Stena Line vessels. The firm, run by maritime engineering specialists Paul Smith and Peter Hillan, has delivered a package of insulation and fabrication work for the Stena Ro-Pax Superfast ferries VII and VIII. All repairs were completed on the move while the vessels continued service between Belfast and Cairnryan in Ireland, ensuring no operational downtime.

Seajacks Leviathan and Seajacks Kraken are prepared for their coming assignments, following a series of repair and renewal jobs by Shipdock Amsterdam. The shipyard, part of Damen Shiprepair & Conversion, had been commissioned for the two jack-ups by Seajacks UK Ltd. The Great Yarmouth (United Kingdom) based company has assigned the shipyard various and different major and minor adjustments on the two jack-up sister vessels in between North Sea offshore windfarm and oil & gas installation contracts.

India's First 'Home Grown' Aircraft Carrier Launched

India has launched its first home-built aircraft carrier from Cochin Shipyard in southern Kerala state. The 37,500 tonne INS Vikrant is expected to go for extensive trials in 2016 before being inducted into the navy by 2018, reports the BBC. With this launch, India joins a select group of countries capable of building such a vessel. The launch of INS Vikrant marks the end of the first phase of its construction. The ship will be then re-docked for outfitting and further construction. The new aircraft carrier has a length of 260m (850ft) and a breadth of 60m, having been designed and constructed locally using high grade steel made by a state-owned steel company.

Harad

Harad is the first in a four-ship double-hulled series of VLCCs constructed for Hellespont of Greece by the South Korean builder Samsung Heavy Industries. During construction, the four vessels were re-sold to NSCSA of Saudi Arabia. The vessel, which incorporates a number of technical features to ensure high levels of environmental protection and high performance, holds a large main engine, improved strength by increased plate thickness, improved service lifetime for coatings by increased paint specification and advanced inert gas system. The hull form of the vessel has been specifically remolded to meet Hellespont's requirements and differs from the conventional VLCCs, featuring a 'blunt' fore part and a breadth of 190 ft. (58 m) to reduce hull deflection.
