MR spent time with Graham Couser, VP of Sales and Marketing, Grand Bahama Shipyard Ltd. (GBSL), for updates and insights on how this yard is faring in the current market and investing for the future. As the largest ship repair yard in the Caribbean, Grand Bahama Shipyard Limited, Couser said the yard is committed to continual investment based on customer’s needs, in markets good and bad. “The cruise market remains buoyant and upbeat with growth planned into the next few years,” said Couser.

Harris Pye Engineering, Grand Bahama Shipyard Partner

Harris Pye Engineering has announced  the recent alliance with Grand Bahama Shipyard Ltd. The two companies met in Miami at the Cruise Shipping Exhibition and discussed a working relationship earlier this year, which was continued through further discussions during OTC in Houston. Through this alliance Harris Pye Engineering are able to offer the full range of technical capabilities - from design to full project execution, whilst the Grand Bahama Shipyard are able to offer its facilities as well as labor and management, enabling both parties to offer a permanent presence within the region. "We share a strategic vision," said Graham Couser, SVP of the Grand Bahama Shipyard Ltd upon the announcement of the signing of a cooperation agreement with Harris Pye.

Byrd Appointed SVP Operations, Grand Bahama

Reuben Byrd, a 28 year maritime industry veteran has been appointed Senior Vice President Operations of the Grand Bahama Shipyard Ltd., effective September 14, 2009. Byrd joined the team at the yard in time for the start of this year’s cruise season. In his capacity as SVP Operations, Byrd will report to the Chairman and CEO, Calle Rotkirch, oversee the day to day operations of the shipyard and develop the yard for future expansion. Before assuming his role at Grand Bahama Shipyard Ltd., Byrd served in several executive positions, most recently as Vice President of Repair and Conversion Operations for Bender shipbuilding in Mobile Alabama. He previously was with Tampa shipbuilding and repair as VP of Production until the sale of the yard.

Rotkirch Named Chairman and CEO of Grand Bahama Shipyard

Carl-Gustaf (Calle) Rotkirch, a 32-year maritime industry veteran, has been named Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Grand Bahama Shipyard, Ltd., effective August 1, 2008. In this capacity, Rotkirch will oversee all operations of the shipyard, which is one of the largest cruise ship repair facilities in the world; Grand Bahama Shipyard services more than 100 cruise ships, cargo vessels, tankers, and naval vessels annually. Managing Director David Dalgleish will continue his day to day operation of the yard while reporting directly to Rotkirch.

Mighty Servant 3 Back at the End of 2008

The flat deck open stern semi-submersible heavy transport vessel Mighty Servant 3 is due to rejoin Dockwise's operational fleet at the end of 2008 after being fully reinstated at the Grand Bahama Shipyard Ltd. Dockwise Ltd. and Grand Bahama Shipyard Ltd. entered into an agreement for the complete renovation of the Mighty Servant 3. Dockwise and Grand Bahama Shipyard Ltd. expect to complete this operation by the end of 2008. The causes of the accident are being investigated by both the Dutch Shipping Council and the Angolan Inquiry Commission. The final conclusions have not yet been published. The Dockwise internal investigation suggests neither technical equipment nor a structural integrity failure. All possible liabilities have been settled with the Angolan government. Dockwise Ltd.

Dock Starts 170-Day Journey

On July 2 the ex-Portland Dock # 4, now the Grand Bahama Shipyard Dock # 2, departed Portland,Ore., bound for it's new home at the Grand Bahama Shipyard Ltd. in Freeport, Grand Bahama. Under a marine management contract with Grand Bahama Shipyard (GBSY), Seaspan has chartered the Global Towing Alliance Ocean Going Tug "De Yue". The 'De Yue' is a 20,800 bhp, 200-mt BP, twin screw deep sea salvage tug owned by Guangzhou Salvage of China and is uniquely suited for a tow of this magnitude due to her high BHP and her large bunker capacity. The 'De Yue' is expected to take approximately 170 days encompassing approximately 20,000 NM with an average tow speed of about 5.5 knots. Routing is specifically designed to avoid major weather patterns in each of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans.
