MARAD Awards More Than $20 Mln to Small US Shipyards

More than $20 million in grant funding has been awarded to support capital improvement projects at 29 small shipyards in 22 states across the U.S.The funding, awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) Small Shipyard Grant Program, supports capital improvements that foster increased efficiency and economic growth.“These grants are an investment in our country’s small shipyards and will help create good jobs for America’s workers,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) today awarded $4.9 million in grants to support capital improvements at nine small shipyards located throughout the United States. Provided through the Small Shipyard Grant Program, the funding supports industrial modernizations that increase productivity, allowing our Nation’s small shipyards to compete more effectively in the global marketplace. “Small shipyard grants do more than just improve shipyard infrastructure and equipment or add to the bottom line,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.

Metal Shark Acquires Shipyard, Announces Expansion

Louisiana-based boat manufacturer Metal Shark Aluminum Boats is significantly expanding its operations and has acquired a large waterfront parcel to accommodate the production of larger vessels. The builder has signaled its entry into the shipbuilding sector with the purchase of a 25-acre waterfront tract located in South Louisiana’s St. Mary Parish. Plans for the new facility call for over 60,000 square feet of manufacturing space, with approximately 100 new employees expected to be hired within the next few years.

Metal Shark to Construct 350, Yes 350, Hi-speed Navy Boats

Louisiana-based aluminum boat manufacturer Metal Shark Aluminum Boats LLC has been awarded a contract to produce up to 350 specialized vessels for the United States Navy. The fixed-price contract is for the construction of the Navy’s High Speed Maneuverable Surface Target (HSMST) vessels. Based on Metal Shark’s high performance 26-foot Relentless center console model, the twin engine, welded aluminum HSMSTs will be utilized by the Navy primarily for advanced weapons system testing and fleet training exercises.

The Department of Defense announce, amongst others, Navy contracts for Gravois Aluminum Boats, and Marine Hydraulics International. Gravois Aluminum Boats LLC, Jeanerette, La., is being awarded a $9,634,577 firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for the construction of command force protection medium harbor security boats, technical data and spare parts. The harbor security boats provide anti-terrorism/force protection patrols for U.S. Navy installations, which include patrol, interrogation of other waterborne assets and escorting large vessels in and out of harbors in various weather and water conditions, throughout the year, day and night.

Louisiana Manufacturer will Replace Coast Guard's Small Response Boat Fleet. Metal Shark Boats has been awarded a contract to replace the U.S. Coast Guard's fleet of Response Boat - Small (RB-S) vessels. Up to 470 boats will be delivered across the Coast Guard fleet, with an additional 20 boats will be available to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, with another ten slated for purchase by the U.S. Navy. The $192 million contract is one of the largest boat buys of its kind for the Coast Guard, and provides a significant economic boost to the state of Louisiana.
