Dr. Lorry Wagner has served as president of the Cleveland-based Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation (LEEDCo) since May of 2010.LEEDCo is the public private partnership behind the effort to construct Icebreaker Wind, a 6 turbine 20.7 megawatt offshore wind energy demonstration project in Lake Erie, 8 miles off the shore of Cleveland. LEEDCo has received funding from the U.S. DOE under its Advanced Technology Demonstration Projects award and has partnered with Fred. Olsen Renewables of Norway. Dr.

Burger Boat Company delivered the R/V Arcticus, a 78-foot research vessel for the United States Geological Survey (USGS), on Friday, October 17, 2014. The Arcticus replaces the 38-year-old R/V Grayling and brings the USGS Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC) large vessel fleet up-to-date. The Arcticus will be stationed at the USGS base in Cheboygan, Michigan and incorporates modern marine standards and state-of-the-art technology to more safely and effectively conduct fisheries research.

The new oceanographic research and fisheries assessment vessel, Arcticus, completed her sea trials and was delivered to the U.S. Geological Survey's Great Lakes Science Center on October 17. The Arcticus, designed by JMS Naval Architects (JMS) and constructed at Burger Boat Company, replaces the R/V Grayling and becomes the newest member of a five-vessel fleet owned and operated by the Great Lakes Science Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. JMS completed the concept and contract design and provided all technical representation at the shipyard during construction.

Anne Brengle, president of the Coast Guard Foundation, presented the check to Rear Adm. Fred Midgette, commander of the Coast Guard 9th District at a ceremony in Cleveland. The presentation of the check was held at the Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland, April 28, 2014. The money will be used to build a community center at Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association is to present a public program featuring a range of important issues concerning the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes Symposium is a first-of-its- kind public program focusing on timely legal issues impacting the Great Lakes. Stakeholders will discuss topics ranging from the regulation of phosphorous discharged into the Great Lakes to the development of wind turbines and the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The Symposium’s panel discussion will feature noted speakers on Great Lakes topics, including Director Chris Korleski (EPA Great Lakes National Program Office), Retired Congressman Steven LaTourette, Jim Weakley (Lake Carriers’ Association), Brian Cook (Ohio EPA), and Joel Brammeier (Alliance for the Great Lakes).

The U.S. Geological Survey awarded a contract for the construction of a large research vessel for Lakes Huron, Michigan, and Superior to Burger Boat Company of Manitowoc, Wis. Port of Cleveland formally launching work boats for Cleveland Harbor cleanup; Two vessels to remove floating debris from river and downtown lakefront as part of Port’s environmental stewardship mission. The Port of Cleveland is holding a Commissioning Ceremony for its new custom-made boats and their crews. The sister vessels – Flotsam & Jetsam – will work in tandem to collect and remove floating debris. This debris, which can range from tree limbs to plastic bottles, is more than an eyesore; it can be a problem for commercial and recreational boats as well as wildlife.

Caribbean Tugz, LLC, an affiliate of SEACOR Holdings, Inc., Fort Lauderdale, Florida has awarded Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio vessel construction contracts to simultaneously build two new state-of-the-art 50-ton bollard pull ASD tugboats to be used for ship docking and escort operations at the Hovensa Oil Refinery in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The contracts’ total price of the new tugs is $23 million. Design and construction are to start immediately, and the tugs are scheduled for completion in early 2013.

Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, OH, finished the 5-year overhaul work on the U.S. Geological Survey Research Vessel Grayling. Under a Fleet Maintenance Contract with the Great Lakes Science Center, Ann Arbor, MI of the U.S. Geological Survey, Department of the Interior, the Grayling was drydocked and given a detailed inspection, cleaning, tune up, repair and modifications. Some of the major work items included overhauling the generators and engines, painting the hull, and repairing of the exhaust and propulsion systems. The 75 ft.

Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio, completed five-year overhaul work on the U.S. Geological Survey Research Vessel Sturgeon. Under a Fleet Maintenance Contract with the Great Lakes Science Center, Ann Arbor, MI of the U.S. Geological Survey, Department of the Interior, the Sturgeon was drydocked and given a thorough cleaning, painting, inspection, repair and tune up. Some of the major work items included redesigning the hydraulic system, shaft and propulsion repairs, generator overhauls and steering system repairs. The 105 ft. long Sturgeon was built in 1974 and is home-ported in Cheboygan, MI. The Sturgeon is the Center's second largest vessel with great geographic range and advanced scientific abilities.

Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio, will perform deck repairs to the Nautica Queen. The 124 ft long Nautica Queen was built in 1981 and is home-ported in Cleveland, Ohio on the west bank of the flats. The Nautica Queen can accommodate up to 400 passengers in the two enclosed decks and spacious observation deck on the top of the ship. The vessel hosts lunch and dinner cruises as well as Sunday brunch and also hosts corporate and birthday parties as well as wedding receptions.

Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio, will perform repairs, haul out and drydocking, as necessary, to the U.S. Geological Survey Research Vessel Sturgeon under a fleet maintenance contract with the Great Lakes Science Center, Ann Arbor, Mich. of the U.S. Geological Survey, Department of the Interior. The 105 ft. long Sturgeon was built in 1974 and is home-ported in Cheboygan, Mich. The Sturgeon is the Center's second largest vessel with great geographic range and advanced scientific abilities.

Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio, drydocked the ferry William Market to begin maintenance and repairs for its U.S. Coast Guard five-year inspection. The work will include routine cleaning and painting, hull inspection, valve overhauls and steering system modifications. In addition to this, all of the ferry’s exterior fiberglass bench seats are being replaced with new aluminum bench seats. This is the second time this year Miller Boat Line, the vessel’s owner, has entrusted one of its vessels to Great Lakes Shipyard.

The New York Power Authority’s newly constructed pedestal crane barge will be christened at Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio. The christening ceremony will take place on Thursday, September 23, 2010, beginning at 11 a.m. The barge will be utilized for deployment and retrieval of an ice boom placed across the Niagara River at Buffalo New York to prevent ice from blocking the hydro-electric water intakes of the New York Power Authority. Bristol Harbor Group Inc., Bristol, Rhode Island, designed the barge for New York Power Authority and also acted as its representatives during construction. Ronald C. Rasmus, President and CEO of The Great Lakes Group, will be the ceremony’s principal speaker.

Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio, completed construction and delivery of two new barges for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The barges will be used to perform critical maintenance and inspections of lock and dam facilities on the upper Mississippi River lock and dam section. One of the barges will service Lock and Dam 16 in Illinois City, Ill. while the other one will service Lock and Dam 18 in Gladstone, Ill. Marine science is making great strides forward due in large measure to several new vessels that have delivered recently and others under construction Headlining this news is the Oscar Dyson, the first of four vessels loaded with scientific gear that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is having built at VT Halter Marine, Pascagoula, Miss. The first vessel was completed in September of 2004 and as the Oscar Dyson was being completed, the contract for the second vessel, Henry B. Bigelow was announced. These 208-ft. by 49-ft. vessels have cutting edge capabilities to gather scientific information on fish populations and the water quality of their habitat.
