Sif Holding Eyes Japan Project

Sif Holding, the manufacturer of large steel tubulars, has entered into exclusive negotiations for the delivery of 33 monopiles and 33 Transition pieces (25 KTon steel) for an offshore wind project in Japan.The current state of negotiations has led to a pre- order of the steel for the project, said the Netherlands-headquartered company, which provides steel foundations to the offshore wind, oil and gas markets.Manufacture of the MP/TP-foundations and disclosure of project details is subject to the issue of a Notice To Proceed (NTP) by the client, it said.Sif’s orderbook for 2020 now has approximately 175 Kton of which 25 Kton under exclusive…

Efforts to Curb Plastic Litter in Oceans are Working

The number of plastic bags found in the seas around Britain has significantly dropped since 2010 as European governments crack down on their use, researchers said on Thursday. The percentage of trawls by fishermen that catch at least one plastic bag in the greater North Sea, off Britain's east coast, more than halved since 2010 to 16 percent, scientists in Britain and the Netherlands said. DeepOcean Secures BG Group IMR Deal

DeepOcean has secured a contract with BG Group for inspection, maintenance and repair (IMR) work on the British operator’s subsea assets off the UK and Norway. The Norwegian contractor will use vessels from its North Sea-based fleet to carry out work under the five-year deal, for which a value was not disclosed. "The five year contract covers all ROV-based IMR work for BG Group on UK and Norwegian subsea assets. DeepOcean will use vessels from its North Sea based fleet," says a statement from the company. “IMR is one of our main service lines and building upon our strong position in the Norwegian subsea market, we are successful in tailoring our IMR solutions to our Clients’ specifications and high expectations of cost efficient operations.”…

Saving Europe's Coastal Waters

Eutrophication, the ageing of marine waters by biological enrichment, is caused by the increased amount of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients arising from human activities. This overloading of nutrients is a major problem in many European coastal areas as it causes a series of undesirable effects. Because the excessive growth of plankton algae increases the amount of organic matter settling at the bottom of marine waters, the increase in oxygen consumption can lead to oxygen depletion and changes in the community structure or the death of benthic fauna. Bottom-dwelling fish may also die. Eutrophication also promotes the risk of harmful algal blooms that may cause discolouration of the water, foam formation, and the death of benthic fauna and wild or caged fish.
