Jennifer Carpenter has been president and CEO of The American Waterways Operators (AWO) in January 2020, but her time with the national trade association representing the inland and coastal tugboat, towboat and barge industry dates back to 1990. 101 Crowley Vessels Honored with Environmental Awards in Recognition of 984 Combined Years of Safe Operations. More than 100 Crowley Maritime Corporation-owned and -operated vessels were honored with Certificates of Environmental Achievement for years of safe operations during the recent 12th-annual Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) awards ceremony, held at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington D.C. Each of Crowley’s honored vessels received the certificates for having worked at least two consecutive years without an environmental incident.

Clean Marine has been selected by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea to supply exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS) for a Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) being built for Dorian LPG Ltd. The order will enable the new Dorian LPG vessel to comply with future legislation relating to sulphur emissions without switching to more expensive fuels. Dorian LPG has offices in the U.S., U.K. and Greece and is an owner and operator of modern VLGCs. The company owns and operates three modern VLGCs and one pressurized LPG vessel.

Bureau Veritas introduced a Green Rating Composite Index which will provide charterers and regulators with a tool to compare the environmental performance of ships and will give owners a tool against which to assess environmental investment in the vessel. The Green Rating Composite Index builds on BV's international experience with rating the environmental performance of buildings and its research into new technologies to make ships more fuel efficient. "To encourage the market to use the most environmentally-friendly ships, and to encourage owners and yards to invest in greener technology, we must have a clear standard to compare the environmental performance of ships," explains Didier Chaléat, Senior Vice-President, Bureau Veritas.

For the first time in 63 seasons of scenic cruises on Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire, the M/S Mount Washington will rely on clean diesel power from a pair of newly installed Cat C32 ACERT marine engines. Through the help of funds from the U.S. government’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), Mount Washington Cruises received an EPA grant to replace older diesel engines with new “greener” technology. The M/S Mount Washington was one of nine projects funded in the northeast and the only project funded in New Hampshire.
