USCG Warns of Adverse Weather in Bay Area
The Coast Guard advises exercising caution on and around the San Francisco Bay coastline and waterfronts, as excessively high tides are expected through mid-week. The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood statement for a series of King Tides, which are expected to run through Wednesday. The conditions are expected to result in minor coastal flooding of low-lying areas along our coastline and bay fronts. Low-lying coastal locations, such as parking lots or coastal trails, may experience minor flooding during high tide. The Coast Guard encourages all marinas, vessel owners and operators and the public to prepare for and be cognizant of localized flooding.
USCG to Ensure Safety During World Series
The Coast Guard and local agencies are working to ensure the safety of boaters and baseball fans during World Series games at AT&T Park this weekend. The Coast Guard Captain of the Port has established a safety zone effective from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday through Sunday in the McCovey Cove area and waterways will be patrolled by Coast Guard, police and fire department crews. There is also a safety zone in place around fireworks barges that will be operating in the area involved in post game fireworks. "There's nothing that revs up baseball fans more than the World Series, but everyone needs to be safe and not let the excitement of the games lead to injury or unsafe practices," said Capt. Greg Stump, commander of Coast Guard Sector San Francisco.
Coast Guard, Stakeholders to Meet Disabled Tanker in San Francisco Bay
The U.S. Coast Guard, along with several federal, state and local partner agencies, have formed a safety and assessment team with the owners of the disabled tanker Pine Galaxy to ensure the safety of the ship's crew and finalize plans for the ship to be brought into the port of San Francisco for repairs. The 485-foot Bahamian registered ship experienced an engine room fire on Aug. 13 that resulted in the death of one crew member and the loss of electrical power and propulsion. The ship, a mixed-product carrier, is currently being towed toward San Francisco with a varying arrival time based on weather conditions and the speed of the tow. Cargoes include neutral oil, tetramer, propylene tetramer and vegetable oil.

Oil Cleanup Continues in Oakland Estuary
Members of the U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Francisco Incident Management Division were notified by the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) on-scene coordinator that their contractor, Global Diving and Salvage, Inc. (GDSI), had discovered tar balls and heavy oil while removing sediment from the tug Respect in the Oakland Estuary Oct. 14, 2013. Further research on the Respect showed an estimated 300-500 gallons of oil had been left aboard during removal operations conducted in 1998. The Respect was then vandalized in 2007 and sank with an unknown oil potential.
USCG Urges Caution along California Coast
The Coast Guard is warning boaters to exercise extreme caution while operating along the northern California Coast from Thursday through Friday evening as the National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory extending from south of Sonoma County into Monterey County. It is forecasted that large swells up to the 20-foot range will create strong rip currents at most beaches, moderate to large surf at reefs and sand bars and potential sneaker waves at steeper beaches. “Boaters and beach-goers should remain vigilant, prepare for the unexpected and have proper survival and communications gear at the ready if disaster strikes,” said Capt. Greg Stump, commander of Coast Guard Sector San Francisco.
