First LNG Shipment Arrives at New Dutch Floating Terminal

The first ship to bring a cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to a new terminal at the Dutch port of Eemshaven has docked and has started the unloading process, the gas grid operator said on Thursday, part of Europe's bid to cut reliance on Russian gas.The LNG tanker Murex berthed alongside the regasification unit at the new EemsEnergyTerminal, which can handle 8 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas a year, a Gasunie spokesperson said."Everything is going perfectly," Marie-Lou Gregoire of Gasunie said.The terminal, near Groningen, has two Floating Storage Regasification Units (FSRUs) that Gasuni

AkzoNobel Names Poux-Guillaume as Next CEO

ZIM Returns to NWSA North Harbor

The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA ), a marine cargo operating partnership of the ports of Seattle and Tacoma, has welcome the ZIM Ningbo to its North Harbor.Zim Integrated Shipping Services (ZIM) is expanding its presence at the NWSA by joining the 2M trans-Pacific service calling at Terminal 46 in Seattle, it said in a press release.ZIM will have four of its own vessels in the weekly ZP9 service with increased capacity to serve the NWSA gateway. This will be the first regular call of ZIM vessels at the NWSA since the spring of 2017.“We are proud to welcome ZIM back to our family of steamship lines calling at The Northwest Seaport Alliance,” said Port of Seattle Commissioner Courtney Gregoire.

Leavitt Heads Seattle Port's Environment Protection, Development

After an extensive national search, the Port of Seattle has promoted Elizabeth Leavitt to lead its work to protect and enhance the environment. The Senior Director for Environment and Sustainability is a newly created position leading a center of expertise that consolidates environmental, sustainability, and planning functions. Leavitt will report to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and will serve on the CEO’s Executive Leadership Team. “It is impressive that, within the large candidate pool, the Port’s own staff provided excellent people who rose to the top,” said Port COO Dave Soike. Leavitt has worked for the Port for more than 26 years, initially as a senior environmental program manager and, for the past seven years, as the director of aviation planning and environmental programs.

Port of Seattle Welcomes New Commissioner

The Port of Seattle welcomed its newest commissioner, Fred Felleman, as he took the oath of office along with reelected Commissioner Courtney Gregoire at Tuesday’s  Commission meeting. The commission officers for 2016 were also announced. Commissioner John Creighton will serve as Commission President while Commissioner Tom Albro will serve as Commission Vice President, Commissioner Stephanie Bowman will serve as Commission Secretary, Commissioner Courtney Gregoire will serve as Assistant Secretary, and Commissioner Felleman will be Commissioner-at-Large. “The Port of Seattle starts 2016 focused on growing the middle-class jobs that ports bring to the region,” Creighton said.

Seattle, Tacoma Ports Welcome State Transport Investment

Washington State Legislature’s passed a $16.2 billion transportation investment package that ports of Tacoma and Seattle say will benefit the state’s economy by speeding the movement of cargo through the ports and freight corridors. The Port of Seattle’s co-presidents Stephanie Bowman and Courtney Gregoire have been reelected by the port’s commission for another full-year term. The commission also elected John Creighton to serve as vice president, Tom Albro to serve as commission secretary and Bill Bryant to serve as assistant secretary. “We began 2014 with a focus on critical issues including enhancing the competitiveness of our seaport, finding the right executive leadership for the port and expanding job opportunities in our communities,” said commission co-president Gregoire.

Holland America Line Named 'Marine Environmental Business of the Year'

Holland America Line was named the 2014 Marine Environmental Business of the Year by the Port of Seattle. Port commissioner Courtney Gregoire presented the award to Keith Taylor, senior vice president, fleet operations, at the Seattle Propeller Club’s Maritime Festival Lunch held Tuesday, May 13, 2014, aboard Carnival Miracle, which was docked at Port of Seattle. The cruise line was recognized for its efforts to reduce its global environmental footprint through a series of objectives that greatly reduce consumption of fuel and water, engine emissions and generation of solid waste, along with increasing recycling across its fleet of 15 ships.

Senators Murray, Cantwell Secure Wins for Ports of Seattle, Tacoma

U.S. Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) yesterday announced that a critical provision they authored to reform the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund (HMTF) and significantly benefit the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma was included in the bipartisan, bicameral deal on the Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA) released in the afternoon. As “donor ports,” the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma currently receive just pennies for each dollar they contribute to the HMTF through collected shipping taxes, while other ports around the country disproportionately receive millions more. WSF: Construction to Start on 144-car Ferry

WSDOT is moving forward to build new ferries to replace its aging fleet.

State invests in expanding ferry fleet, but funding unavailable for more vessels. Construction will begin early next year on a new 144-car ferry. The Ferries Division of the Washington State Department of Transportation today signed a contract change order with Vigor Industrial and its US Fab shipbuilding division to begin construction. “This has been a momentous week for Washington state and our ferry system,” said Gov. Chris Gregoire. Work on this first vessel will create an estimated 200 family-wage jobs at Vigor and 350 jobs at subcontractors, vendors and other shipyards in the region.

Washington State Ferry System Reform Action Plan

Washington State Ferries (WSF) said it will work to implement a majority of 36 recommendations made by an independent panel to improve ferry operations. Changes will come in ferry management, vessel and terminal maintenance, finance, scheduling, labor and customer service, according to an action plan the Ferries Division of the Washington State Department of Transportation submitted to Gov. Chris Gregoire. “We have a world-class ferry system that provides marine highways throughout the Puget Sound region that are vital to our economy and our way of life,” Transportation Secretary Paula Hammond said. WSDOT Awards Bid for Additional 64-Car Ferries

Washington State Department of Transportation’s Ferries Division (WSF) announced on Oct. 13, that it is awarding a contract to Todd Pacific Shipyards to build two additional 64-car ferries. Todd Shipyards submitted a $114m bid on Thursday, October 8 to build two more 64-car ferries. With the contract award, Todd will begin constructing the second and third ferries in this new class of vessels. WSF awarded a contract to Todd to construct the first 64-car ferry in December 2008. That vessel is under construction and scheduled to go into service on the Port Townsend/Keystone route in late-summer 2010. “This contract award is expected to sustain nearly 400 family wage jobs,” said. Final Contract to Fund Neah Bay Response Tug

The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) has extended its contract agreement with Crowley Maritime Corp. to station a state-funded emergency response tug at Neah Bay for another full year of service beginning July 1, 2009, through June 30, 2010. Under the $3.6m extension agreement, an emergency response tug will remain at Neah Bay to prevent disabled ships and barges from drifting onto rocks and causing oil spills in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Washington's outer coast. Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Ferries Division announced on Dec. 1 that it is awarding a contract to Todd Pacific Shipyards to build one 64-auto ferry. Todd Shipyards submitted a $65.5m bid last month to build one 64-auto ferry. With the contract award, the new ferry is on an 18-month construction timeline. WA Petitions Against LNG Terminal License

In this case, Ecology argues the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) prematurely awarded a license in September to Northern Star Natural Gas for a liquefied natural gas terminal and pipeline that impacts Washington and communities. The proposed pipeline route for the Bradwood Landing project would cross the Columbia River and extend 17 miles underground through . Federal law requires FERC to perform a detailed environmental impact review. Ecology takes issue with the adequacy of FERC's review which guided the Commission's license decision. Rather than wait for FERC's decision on the request for rehearing, Gov. Chris Gregoire directed Ecology to help conduct a thorough environmental review through the State Environmental Policy Act.

Crowley emergency response tug began its first day of year-round service today in Neah Bay, Wash. The emergency response tug will provide assistance to disabled ships and protect the coastline in an unprecedented tour in Washington - providing 365 continuous days of service in an effort to help prevent oil spills in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and along Washington's pristine coastlines. Neah Bay Response Tug Starts First full Year of Service

Beginning July 1, the emergency response tug will begin an unprecedented tour of duty for – providing 365 continuous days of service to help prevent oil spills in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and along coastlines. Since 1999, state-funded response tugs stationed at have kept disabled ships from drifting onto rocks and causing major oil spills during the stormy winter months. The tugs have stood by or assisted 40 ships that were disabled or had reduced maneuvering or propulsion. During the 2008 legislative session, Gov. Gregoire and state lawmakers earmarked $3.7 million for the tug and directed the Department of Ecology (Ecology) to contract for year-round emergency response tug service starting July 1, 2008, through June 30, 2009. WSDOT to Move Forward with Ferry Construction

Gov. Chris Gregoire announced that the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will move forward with construction of two 64-car Home style vessels and will not build a smaller 50-car vessel. WSDOT no longer plans to build a 50-car Steilacoom II style vessel, which was originally intended to fill the gap in service until the two Island Homes were built. Instead, WSDOT reached agreement with to extend the lease on one of the County’s ferries until new vessels can be built for the route. Home style ferry is ready for service in spring 2010. WSDOT is working toward building five new ferries – three 144-car vessels and two new 60-car Home style vessels.

During the 2008 legislative session, Gov. Chris Gregoire and lawmakers provided $3.7m for emergency response tug service. Washington Passes New Oil Spill Measures

Gov. Christine Gregoire on May 6, 2005, signed bills that will establish an Oil Spill Monitoring and Oversight Council to provide independent oversight of the state's oil-spill program and a new Washington Academy of Sciences to advise state government on scientific questions. “We are taking positive action today to ensure that our waters are protected from pollution,” Gregoire said at a bill signing ceremony held in Tukwila. · Promote opportunities for the public to become involved in oil-spill response activities. The new academy of sciences will include highly qualified persons in a wide range of scientific disciplines who are willing to contribute their time and expertise for assessments of complex public policy questions.

Governor Chris Gregoire announced the designation of 11 Innovation Partnership Zones in Washington, geographic areas that will promote and develop the state’s regional economies.
