DNV Grants Approval for Liquid Hydrogen Cargo Containment System

CB&I, McDermott's storage business, has received Approval in Principle (AiP) for its design of a liquid hydrogen (LH2) cargo containment system from DNV.CB&I collaborated with Shell International Trading and Shipping Company Limited to provide safe LH2 shipping solutions that enable hydrogen energy supply chains using gas carriers.The containment system design is based on CB&I's proven vacuum-insulated spherical technology for onshore LH2 storage. CB&I has designed and constructed more than 130 large, field-erected LH2 storage tanks worldwide over the past 60 years.

Berge Bulk Vessel Set for WindWings Install

Berge Bulk will equip its Newcastlemax bulker Berge Olympus with WindWings in an effort to evaluate the wind-assisted propulsion technology as a means to reduce vessel emissions.The dry bulk shipowner reached an agreement to install four BAR Tech WindWings by Yara Marine Technologies on board the 210 DWT bulk carrier in the second quarter of 2023.ā€œThis partnership with BAR Tech and Yara Marine is a great step towards our transition to zero-emissions operations,ā€ said James Marshall, CEO of Berge Bulk. ā€œAt Berge Bulk, we believe in the results that can be achieved by harnessing wind power.

U-Ming Takes on Board Jotunā€™s Hull Skater

U-Ming's next bulk carrier newbuild being built in China will feature an underwater hull cleaning robot.The Taiwan-headquartered shipping company has signed a commercial agreement with builder Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard (SWS) and Norway's Jotun for the Jotun Hull Skating Solutions (HSS) to be installed aboard one of U-Mingā€™s four liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual- fuel Tier III 190,000 dwt bulk carriers to be built by SWS in Shanghai to support the long term charter with mining giant Anglo American.

Everything about the HMM Algeciras is big, including the power output of its MAN B&W 11G95ME-C engine ā€“ the mightiest ever built by Germany-based MAN Energy Solutions.The 23,964 TEU containership is the largest ever built, recently launched for South Korean shipping company HMM at the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) Okpo shipyard in Geoje, Korea. The newbuild measures 400 metres in length and 61 meters in beam, and has recently entered service between Asia and Europe via the Suez Canal.The record-setting containership is the first of a dozen 24ā€¦

First Hybrid Cruise Ship Sails Northwest Passage

Norwegian cruise, ferry and cargo operator Hurtigruten announced that its new expedition cruise ship MS Roald Amundsen became the first battery-hybrid powered ship to ever traverse the legendary Northwest Passage last week.As MS Roald Amundsen arrived in Nome, Alaska on September 10, 2019, Captain Kai Albrigtsen made a monumental entry in the shipā€™s logbook: The first complete crossing of the more than 3,000 nautical miles passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific, by hybrid propulsion.ā€œEvery expedition cruise with Hurtigruten is unique, yet this green milestone is literally making history with our guests. Powering Ships with Plastic in Amsterdam

In the Port of Amsterdam, a new factory is being built that could revolutionize the way we dispose of plastic waste. Utilizing groundbreaking technology, the facility will use previously unrecyclable plastic to create fuel for diesel powered cargo ships. The group behind the facility is Bin2Barrel, a Dutch company founded in 2012 by waste management entrepreneurs Floris Geeris and Paul Harkema. While the chemical recycling technology used in the past has worked, Bin2Barrel is the first company to utilize it commercially. Thanks to a partnership with the Port of Amsterdam and a grant from the Dutch government, the plant is expected to begin operations by the end of 2018. If all goes well, this will be the first of four such ā€˜plastic to fuelā€™ factories to be built near the port.

Fincantieri Orders Heat Power Systems for Cruise Newbuilds

Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri has selected Climeonā€™s heat power system Climeon Ocean for its energy efficient solutions, purchasing six Climeon Ocean 450M systems to be installed in its upcoming new cruise ship builds. Total capacity on all ships is up to 2.7 MW. With the latest order, Fincantieri has become the first shipyard contracted to install Climeon Ocean on new cruise ships. NASSCO Makes Three Lead Deliveries in 2015

San Diego based shipbuilder General Dynamics NASSCO delivered three lead ships in 2015: USNS Lewis B. Puller, the Isla Bella and the Lone Star State. Each vessel represents three new and separate ship classes and highlights the builderā€™s diverse portfolio of commercial and government contracts, the company said. In June, NASSCO delivered the USNS Lewis B. Puller to the U.S. Navy, the first ship in the Expeditionary Base Mobile (ESB) class. BMW Opens Vehicle Distribution Center at Baltimore Port

BMW Group celebrated the official opening of its newest Vehicle Distribution Center at the Port of Baltimore yesterday. The facility will serve 96 dealers within the Central and Eastern regions of BMWā€™s dealer network. Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO, BMW of North America, and Craig Westbrook, Vice President ā€“ Aftersales, BMW of North America, were in attendance and spoke at the opening. ā€œBMW Group year-to-date sales in the U.S. set a new benchmark, topping 246,000 vehicles in the first eight months of this year, and we are full of confidence that we will follow our success through the remaining months of 2014,ā€ said Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO, BMW of North America. With this new facility, BMW enhances its position at the largest car processing port on the East Coast.

Terragon Awarded for Innovation

Terragon Environmental Technologies Inc. was the recipient of the Technical Innovation award at the 2014 Lloydā€™s List North American Awards dinner held February 19 in Houston, Texas. The award celebrates the shipping industryā€™s ability to create and recognizes groundbreaking technology, design and service. Terragon earned the award for its novel technology, the Micro Auto Gasification (or simply, MAGS), an appliance designed to use shipboard solid waste and sludge oils as fuel to create useful energy that can be integrated back onboard the vessel.

Telsa NanoCoatings Wins Ohio Innovation Award

An Ohio technology start-up fund, The Innovation Fund, has awarded Tesla NanoCoatings of Massillon, Ohio a $100,000 grant to help the new company develop and manufacture its line of corrosion control coatings. It is the third time this year the company has been honored for its groundbreaking technology. Tesla NanoCoatings provides corrosion control coatings with fullerene carbon nanotubecathodic protection of metal to the aerospace/military, petrochemical, transportation, marine and industrial markets.

Floatel Books into Gibdock

The Norwegian-owned offshore accommodation vessel, Edda Fides, one of the most  advanced and sophisticated vessels of its type in the world,  has been dry-docked at Gibdock in Gibraltar for a week-long package of work at the yard. The ā€˜floatelā€™, owned by Østensjø Rederi, arrived at Gibdock on April 2nd and was docked the following day. The main scope of work involved disconnecting and lowering the starboard aft Voith Thruster and renewing the main thruster seal. Edda Fides has a unique monohull form to enable the positioning of the accommodation forward and the Voith thrusters to the stern.
