Crowley Tugboat Crew Commended by CSA

The Crowley Maritime Corp. tugboat 'Explorer' has been awarded a letter of commendation from the Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) for assisting a stricken vessel 30 miles west of Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, in December. Crowley crewmembers quickly responded to the 20-foot vessel, which had run out of fuel, providing the crew of two with water, life jackets, flashlights and a hand-held radio until the Coast Guard arrived to provide further assistance. This Day in U.S. Naval History – December 30

1876-The British ship Circassian was destroyed off Bridgehampton, Long Island, following a successful rescue of 49 persons on December 11 by the Life-Saving Service. During later salvage operations in a storm the ship drifted out of the sand, resulting in the loss of 28 of its salvage crew including 12 Shinnecock Indians. 1944-Coast Guard-manned USS FS-367 rescued survivors from USS Maripopsa at San Jose, Mindoro, Philippine Islands. 1958- The 590-foot tanker African Queen ran aground and split in two 10 miles off Ocean City, Maryland. Within two hours 15 helicopters from the nearby Coast Guard, Navy and Marine Corps bases evacuated all 47 crewmen successfully. The Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center at New York coordinated the operations.

Arctic Evacuation of Cruise Ship Crewmember

The Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center in Juneau is coordinating a rescue with Alaska Clean Seas and British Petroleum for the transfer of a 27 year-old German woman suffering from a possible appendicitis aboard the cruise ship Bremen about 30 miles west of Prudhoe Bay Sept. The cruise ship has altered its voyage and is heading toward Prudhoe Bay were the 42-ft vessel owned by ACS will meet just offshore. Two medical personnel from the BP medical clinic will be aboard the vessel to provide immediate medical care to the woman if needed.

COMSAT Responds To Distress Call Off Ecuador

On January 6, 2002 at approximately 3:46 a.m., COMSAT Mobile Communications' Southbury, Conn. earth station received an Inmarsat-C "Man Overboard" distress call from Akademikis Zavarickis operating in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Equador. Responding to the call was COMSAT operator Joe Wheelahan, who contacted the ship on via an Inmarsat satellite voice call and connected them with the U.S. Coast Guard's Rescue Coordination Center in Norfolk, VA. Norfolk subsequently passed the information onto RCC Ecuador. A little more than three hours later, the man overboard was located and was returned safely to the vessel. Coast Guard Escorts Distressed Vessel

The Coast Guard cutter Mustang assisted five people on a disabled fishing vessel in Prince William Sound today. The Mustang escorted the vessel Current to Patten Bay on Montague Island early Thursday morning. The Current became disabled 23 miles south of Middleton Island in the Gulf of Alaska Wednesday evening. The vessel was without power or engine propulsion. The pilothouse windows had been broken out by 10 to 15 ft. waves. The captain of the Homer-based boat attempted to contact the Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center in Juneau. But the captain couldn't establish a connection. Using a satellite phone, the captain contacted the Coast Guard cutter Roanoke Island around 5:30 p.m.

EPIRB Alerts the Coast Guard To Distressed Sailors

A registered Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) led to the rescue of five British citizens Sunday from a demasted sailing vessel 340 miles off Cape Hatteras, N.C. Paul Huber, 36, of Croston, England, Thomas A.L. Olsen, 26, of Jersey, England, Fiona I.G. Irwin, 36, and her children, ages nine and 12, all of Liverpool, England, were on a trip from Palm Beach, Fla., to England when their 50-foot sailing vessel Free, lost its mast. The cause of the calamity is unknown. This is the second rescue in five days that involved a 406 EPIRB alerting the Coast Guard to a distress. The Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center (RCC), Portsmouth, Va., coordinated a very similar rescue May 16, which also involved an EPIRB alert from a 50-ft.

Coast Guard Rescues Crew of Cargo Ship

The Coast Guard hoisted 17 crewmen off a disabled cargo ship 180 nautical miles southeast of Elizabeth City, N.C. today. Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center, Norfolk (RCC) received a distress signal at 8:04 a.m. reporting that the 600-foot cargo vessel White Seal was disabled, rolling 45-degrees and taking on water. A Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules and two HH-60 Jayhawk helicopters from Air Station Elizabeth City launched to hoist the crewmen from the ship. Seventeen people were hoisted from the ship aboard one of the HH-60 Jayhawks. During the rescue, seas reached heights of 30-40 feet and winds up to 35-45 knots. Blowing snow and sleet reduced visibility to about one-half mile, he added. The Hercules and Jayhawk arrived at Wilmington, N.C. International Airport early this afternoon.
