Robot Lasers Prolong Engine Pistons’ Lifespan

New robotized laser cladding technology aims to revolutionize the reconditioning of large bore pistons in two-stroke engines. A new reconditioning process from Wärtsilä Services’ maintenance and repair services business Line QuantiServ minimises welding, causes less thermal shock to the base material and replaces the old chromium layer’s galvanic application. “In addition to its environmental efficiency, the new coating extends the piston head’s lifespan and time between overhauls (TBO), compared to conventional chromium layers.

New Wärtsilä Subsidiary Trades Classic Engine Parts

Wärtsilä announced it has established a subsidiary to trade spare parts for classic four-stroke Wärtsilä engines. QuantiParts, fully owned by Wärtsilä, will operate from the Netherlands and serves customers in the marine, locomotive and power plant industries worldwide. QuantiParts trades original engine manufacturer (OEM) spare parts for selected mature Wärtsilä medium- and high-speed four-stroke engines, such as Deutz, Stork, Bolnes, Sulzer A/S, Poyaud, SACM and Crepelle. The new company is based in Zwolle, the Netherlands, where its spare parts are traded from. The company's stock consists of nearly 5.5 million components for more than 40 different engine types.

Wärtsilä Opens Workshop in Taranto

New workshop in Taranto, Italy

Wärtsilä has increased its range of engineering services available in Italy with the opening of a new workshop in Taranto, a commercial and military hub in the Puglia region of Southern Italy. Relocation to the new, larger facility provides a more suitable base from which to develop its offering in the region. The new workshop is equipped to perform overhauling services for diesel and gas engines. It is implemented in full compliance with the latest Wärtsilä workshops standards.
