German navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz says it has supplied an advanced gyro compass system for two 25,000 dwt polar class heavy transport vessels for operation north of 70° LAT. The vessels AUDAX and PUGNAX were ordered for Red Box Energy Services and built at Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in China in accordance with the DNV NAUT-AW and highest ice class notations. Raytheon Anschütz has supplied these high-tech vessels with a comprehensive and advanced dual gyro compass system complete with redundancy in distribution and well as a steering gear control system.

The largest contract covers four shipsets, each with a fully equipped triple Standard 22 gyro compass system, repeater compasses and Anschütz PilotStar D autopilot system, for four newbuilt Platform Supply Vessels, followed by various contracts for DP2-classed gyro systems, dual gyro systems and various autopilot systems.

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has won a contract to upgrade the inertial navigation systems (INS) for the Swedish navy’s submarines. Under the contract, awarded by Kockums AB, Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine unit will supply five MK 39 Mod 3C ring laser gyro systems for installation on two Gotland-class and two Södermanland-class submarines, with one set to be used for spares and training. The MK 39 Mod 3C systems will replace the existing spinning mass gyrocompasses currently fitted on the submarines. CA Clase AB, Sperry Marine’s sales and service representative in Sweden, was instrumental in securing the order. Kockums AB will perform the installations, which will be completed by 2011.

Litton Marine has been tapped to supply navigation, communication, control and stabilization systems for a trio of new car carriers under construction in Japan. The three 21,000-grt feeder-type car carriers - Hulls 1184-1186 - are being constructed for UECC (Norway) at Tsuneishi Shipbuilding for delivery in 2000 and 2001. Each will be equipped with a complete Integrated Bridge System (IBS) and Voyage Management System (VMS), as well as Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), with separate navigation, planning and conning stations. Litton's package also includes X-band and S-band BridgeMaster E ARPA radars, gyrocompasses, autopilot and steering systems. The company is also set to supply ring laser gyrocompass systems worth up to $5.2 million for an entire class of U.S.

Northrop Grumman Corporation's Sperry Marine business unit has been selected to supply new-generation ring laser gyro inertial navigation systems for four Egyptian Navy Romeo-class submarines. and precise attitude, velocity and heading inputs for the submarines' navigation and fire-control systems. The $2.4 million contract was awarded by Lockheed Marine, Akron, Ohio, primary integrator for the electronic upgrades on the Romeo-class submarines. Sperry Marine will supply MK39 Mod 3A ring laser gyro systems for each of the four diesel-electric coastal submarines. Deliveries are scheduled to be completed by next fall. The scope of work includes equipment supply, engineering support, installation, commissioning and training.
