Marine Fuels: Unmasking Gas

A primer on the way forward for alternative fuels for marine propulsion. By now, many of us have been passed by a garbage truck, taken a ride on an airport bus or hailed a taxi cab that is clearly labeled by their respective marketing departments that these vehicles are powered by clean burning natural gas. Even now in our own maritime industry, some trendy operators are looking to make the case for liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion systems, others are opting for hybrid-electric solutions, and some are even aiming for full electric configurations.

Martian Ocean Held More Water than the Arctic

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration say there was once more water on the planet Mars than in the Arctic Ocean on Earth. In a new study in the journal Science, space agency researchers say they compared the ratio of two different types of water found in the Martian atmosphere with the ratio of those waters trapped in a Martian meteorite dating back 4.5 billion years. “Our study provides a solid estimate of how much water Mars once had, by determining how much water was lost to space,” said Geronimo Villanueva, a scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and lead author of the new paper. They say more than 4 billion years ago, Mars was covered with water 137 meters deep and that nearly all of it has since evaporated.

DNV GL Launch Joint Industry Project

Sour service fluids from wells place significant demands on pipeline material, particularly in deeper water. This can present major technical and financial challenges for pipeline operators as the fluids can cause fractures and cracks which affect pipeline performance and reliability. DNV GL has now launched a joint industry project (JIP) to develop a methodology to evaluate fractures and cracks using a Single Edge Notched Tensile (SENT) test designed specifically for sour service environments. Eight participants are on board and the JIP is still open for new participants. A pipe material and weld that performs well in air will be significantly less tough and resistant in a sour environment.
