India: East Coast Ports Restrict Activities Ahead of Cyclone

Ports on India's eastern coast on Sunday restricted shipping activities and asked vessels to vacate anchorages ahead of a cyclonic storm expected to make landfall on Wednesday, port authorities and trade sources said.The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that a "very severe cyclonic storm" would impact Indian states including Odisha and West Bengal, where key ports are located.Some regions are likely to receive heavy rainfall and wind speeds could reach 110 miles per hour…

India's Jal Marg Vikas Project on River Ganga on Full Steam

Even as the work on the development of Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP) on River Ganga is going on in full steam, a team of Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) held a two day long intensive advocacy and communications outreach at Sahibganj and Rajmahal in Jharkhand. JMVP is India's prestigious development of waterways.The public meetings are being held as part of a month-long dialogue initiative on the entire stretch of JMVP (Varanasi to Haldia) that began in July.The IWAI is constructing a INR 280. 90 crore (USD 41 mln) multi modal terminal at Sahibganj in Jharkhand besides a proposed ship repair facility and a freight village.

Essar to Develop LNG Terminal at Haldia

India's Essar Ports has won a contract to build the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in West Bengal  under the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) at an investment of Rs 450 crore (USD 70 million). A Press Trust of India report said that the LNG project is expected to be commissioned in two years. The facility will come up at the Haldia port with a capacity to store one million tonne of the clean fuel. Haldia Dock Complex under Kolkata Port Trust had earlier this year invited bids for setting up an LNG terminal with storage and distribution facilities. Essar Ports, in consortium with Ultra LNG and Essar Shipping, had participated in the tender and emerged as the highest bidder for the project, beating state-owned Petronet and private operator V Energy.

Ro-Ro Terminal in Assam to Boost Traffic

The government of India said berthing operation of a vessel was carried out at the newly-constructed Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro) terminal on the Brahmaputra in Assam. The  Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) vessel will be deployed for Ro-Ro (roll-on, roll-off) service between Dhubri and Hatsingimari with a total waterway length of 29 km. Ro-Ro ships are vessels used for carrying wheeled cargo. IWAI's initiative opens a new gate of opportunities in the region by paving the way for drastically bridging the distance and cost for cargo and passenger movement between Dhubri and Hatsingimari which shares its border with Meghalaya. Four Terex Gottwald Cranes for IRC Haldia Port

Düsseldorf, Germany, 14 June 2016 – Terex Port Solutions (TPS) is continuing its success in India with its diesel-electric Terex Gottwald mobile harbour cranes. IRC Natural Resources Pvt. Ltd., which is part of the IRC Group (IRC), has ordered two Model 4 mobile harbour cranes in the G HMK 4406 B 4-rope grab variant for its contract at Berth No. 13, Haldia Dock Complex, located to the south of Kolkata on the Ganges estuary. In August 2016, the cranes will be transported, completely erected, by heavy-load vessel to India, where they will handle coal, coke, manganese ore and limestone from October onwards. The two identical machines have a 40-t grab curve and a maximum lifting capacity of 100 t.

Berthing Delays for Heavy Lift Vessels at Indian Ports

Heavy Lift vessels visiting Indian ports are in for berthing delays at various ports. * In Mumbai Port, berthing delays of approx 10 days for vessel opting for BPS & BPX berths and for Harbour wall berth it is 8 days. For priority vessel it is approx 4 to 5 days. No delays inside Indira docks. * Waiting time in Nhava Sheva shallow water berth is  NIL to 1 day and depends further on the performance of ships at berth and cement vessel calling in near future. * Kandla port - berthing delays in normal import  is 8 to 9 days & normal export group is approx 2 to 3 days, and in 24 hrs group it is expected to be between 24 hrs to 36 hrs. * Mundra port is presently free from congestion. * Adani Hazira port - situation is normal. * Waiting period at Adani Dahej port is approx min 8 to 10 days.

Heavy Lift & Project vessels calling at Indian ports are experiencing congestion, which according to the trade is an artifically created situation. They point out that unlike other vessels, Heavy Lift vessels turnaround time may extends to two to three days or even more. As a result preference is given to other vessels. * In Mumbai Port, berthing delays of approx 8 to 10 days in normal group and for priority vessel 3 to 4 days for vessel opting for BPS & BPX berths,and for Harbour wall berth it is 3 to 4 days. Because of their longer turnaround time heavy lift and project cargo vessels are not being given preferential berthing at most leading Indian ports creating in a kind of a 'pseudo congestion' situation at most ports. Besides, there is a lack of storage space generally at most ports for heavy lift and ODC (Over dimensional cargo) further aggravating the situation. 1) In Mumbai Port as on date there is berthing delays of approx 2 to 3 days for BPS & BPX berths and for Harbour wall berth the delay in getting berthing is approx 1 day. However, there is no delay inside Indira docks. 2) Waiting time at Nhava Sheva shallow water berth is nil to 1 day and depends further on the performance of ships at berth and cement vessel calling in near future.

Tanker Hired To Evacuate Refinery Diesel

Indian Oil Corp. (IOC) hired a 106,000 DWT tanker on a month's charter to evacuate diesel from Reliance Petroleum Ltd's (RPL) refinery to India's east coast. "Liberian tanker Kuban has been taken through Transchart for moving diesel from RPL. We have moved about 87,000 tons of diesel from Jamnagar to the East coast," an unidentified official said. The tanker is heading for Haldia port after offloading fuel at Tuticorin and Paradip, he said, adding that the vessel would return in a week's time to evacuate another 85,000 tons of diesel from RPL's Jamnagar refinery. In April, Reliance produced 1.1 million tons of diesel of which state-run firms lifted 830,000 tons.
