Ingalls Names Norris Director of Government Affairs

Panama Canal Partnership with Miss. Port at Gulfport

Panama Canal Authority (ACP) Administrator/CEO Alberto Alemán Zubieta and Mississippi State Port Authority at Gulfport (MSPA) Executive Director/CEO Donald R. Allee launched a strategic partnership in Panama by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to increase economic growth, spur international trade and promote the “All-Water Route” (the route from Asia to the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts via the Panama Canal). During an official ceremony, both parties, joined by Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, affirmed their commitment to mutual growth and cooperation. Renewable after five years, the first-ever ACP-MSPA agreement will allow for joint marketing ventures, information sharing and technological exchange.

New Maritime Trades Academy

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) hosted groundbreaking ceremonies for the new Jackson County (Miss.) Maritime Trades Academy on June 8 with state and local officials participating. "The shipbuilding academy will help find new workers and upgrade the skills of current workers for our shipbuilders on the Coast and for our energy industry," said Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour. A $20m HUD community development block grant was awarded by the state of Mississippi in August 2009 to build the academy.

Shipbuilding Academy Planned

Construction on a shipbuilding academy proposed for Jackson County could begin as soon as next year according to an April 26 report from the Sun Herald. Gov. Haley Barbour invited interested parties to submit a full application to the Mississippi Development Authority on May 12 for a $20 million Community Development Block Grant. The money is part of Katrina-recovery funds earmarked for economic development and disbursed through the MDA. (Source: Sun Herald)

Mississippi Governor to Speak at Christening

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour will join Navy Adm. William J. Fallon, commander, U.S. Fleet Forces command as principal speakers for the christening of the Aegis-guided missile destroyer Halsey (DDG 97). Ship Systems on Saturday, January 17. New Aegis Destroyer Christened

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour cheers as ship sponsors Heidi Cooke Halsey, Alice Spruance Talbot and Anne Halsey-Smith simultaneously smash ceremonial bottles of champagne across the bow of the Aegis guided missile destroyer DDG 97, officially christening the ship "Halsey." Halsey honors the sponsors' grandfather, Fleet Adm. William Frederick "Bull" Halsey Jr., a World War I and World War II Naval hero. More than 1,000 guests attended the Saturday, January 17, 2004 christening of the Aegis guided missile destroyer Halsey (DDG 97) at Northrop Grumman Corporation's Ship Systems sector.

MarAd Temporarily Suspends Processing

On October 17, 2005, the Deputy Maritime Administrator issued letters to Governor Kathleen Blanco of Louisiana, Governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi and Governor Robert Riley of Alabama, informing them that due to the disruption caused by Hurricane Katrina, the Maritime Administration (MARAD) and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) have temporarily suspended the processing of pending Gulf Coast region Deepwater Port license applications.
