An extensive update of Ship Structural Design (SSD), for 25 years the leading text on the preliminary design of ship structures, is underway. The update is expected to take several years to complete so the publisher, the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME), is making the first two new chapters available on a companion CD. What Should be the Role of Class?

The role of vessel classification societies continues to change dramatically. As the role and relevance of class is hotly debated, MR/EN picked the brains of the industry's major classification societies to analyze both their individual and collective future. If class is to remain relevant, it must remake itself for the modern world, says ABS president and CEO Robert D. Somerville. He recently told delegates to the World Maritime Forum in St. Petersburg, Russia that "self regulation will continue to provide an effective method for establishing and enforcing standards only if all elements of the industry recognize that substantive overhaul is needed." Somerville highlighted the remarkable…

Entry of the Titans Delayed

After consistent annual growth of between seven and nine percent, the global containership market is experiencing severe conditions, with the collapse in charter rates and continuing, extensive capacity additions to the fleet at a time of stagnation in the world economy. The international trade downturn, exacerbated by the broader economic impact of the terrorist outrages in the U.S., has resulted in the deferment of contracts for the much-vaunted, proposed new generation of linehaul vessels over 8,000-TEU capacity. The events in the liner sector underscore shipping's propensity for extreme market conditions, over-and-above the cyclical patterns that have traditionally been experienced in the bulker and tanker fields.

GL Reports Strong Year

Clear two-digit growth in gross performance, turnover and earnings as well as a doubling of the ship deliveries and above-average growth in the attendance to the fleet in service characterized the successful business year 2000 for Germanischer Lloyd. "We have therefore more than compensated for the cyclical downturn of the previous year, and were also able to improve our market position on the whole," the Executive Board Members Consul Rainer Schöndube and Dr. Hans G. Payer said. The Executive Board of the globally active classification society expects that the year 2001 will also end on a high level. The positive development was promoted by a considerable improvement in the general market situation.
