Wärtsilä wins Hopper Dredger Propulsion Deal

The technology group Wärtsilä has again been selected by the Netherlands-based shipbuilding company Damen Shipyards Group to provide the main propulsion solutions for a large Marine Aggregate Dredger (MAD). The dredger is being built for the U.K. company Hanson Aggregates, a leading supplier of heavy building materials for the construction industry. The order with Wärtsilä was signed in May 2019.An identically designed vessel from Damen, which is expected to begin operations within the coming few months, is also fitted with the same Wärtsilä solutions.

Hanson Orders Advanced Aggregate Dredger

Damen Shipyards Group and UK-based Hanson Aggregates Marine have signed a contract for the construction of a Marine Aggregate Dredger (MAD) 3500 vessel. Damen’s shipyard in Galaţi, Romania is selected to build the innovative new vessel, which is  scheduled for delivery in early 2021. The ship will be used to extract aggregates offshore up to depths of 55 metres, for use in the onshore construction industry.The dredge equipment and screening installation will be constructed by Damen Dredging Equipment (DDE) in Nijkerk, The Netherlands, said a press release.Hanson UK is a leading supplier of heavy building materials to the construction industry, and produces aggregates (crushed rock, sand and gravel), ready-mixed concrete, asphalt, cement and cement-related materials.

Haven Marine Signs Service Contract with Svitzer

Haven Marine Services informs it has signed a five year contract with Svitzer which will see the yard service the requirements of Svitzer’s vessels within the Bristol Channel and Irish Sea areas. Haven Marine Services’ Managing Director, Steven Arnold, stated, “This commitment reinforces Svitzer’s faith in the capabilities of the facility, based on exemplary service during the past two years. In addition to the Svitzer fleet, further confirmed dockings, include Hanson Aggregates vessels, the Arco Dee and the Arco Dart, and P&O Maritime’s research vessel the Prince Madog.

Obituary: Josip Gruzling, Nozzle Expert, 1943-2007

Josip Gruzling, P.Eng., President of NautiCAN R&D Ltd., passed away Monday, September 10. Josip was a pioneer in the use of hydrofoils to increase the efficiency of tugs and barges. He used his inventiveness and determination to develop two types of devices: the High Efficiency Nozzles and Hydralift Skegs for barges, receiving nine patents for his efforts. Over 100 High Efficiency Nozzles have been built and over 40 Hydralift skegs have been installed worldwide. Josip got his start in 1968 working for Robert Allan Ltd., going on to found NautiCAN in 1972 to develop his ideas. Hydralift Skegs provide directional stability to barges with much less resistance than standard skegs, typically between a 35 to 50% improvement.

A&P Shipcare Busy with Dredger Repairs

A&P Shipcare has has been busy with Dredger repairs at its Chatham facility. During the past few months, Chatham has welcomed various dredging companies including Hanson Aggregates, South Coast Shipping, United Marine Dredging and Britannia Aggregates. Of the Hanson Aggregates fleet, various afloat repairs have been undertaken on vessels including the Arco Axe, Arco Arun, Arco Adur, Arco Tyne and the Arco Dijk. The Chatham team was pleased to see the Hanson fleet returning to their facility for their repair requirements once again. South Coast Shipping, who have been renamed RMC Marine Ltd, have also been keeping the Chatham team busy with various repairs aboard several of their vessels including the Sand Harrier…
