USS Canberra (LCS 30) Arrives in Sydney Ahead of Commissioning

The U.S. Navy's Independence-variant littoral combat ship USS Canberra (LCS 30) arrived in Sydney, Australia, July 18, ahead of the ship’s ceremonial commissioning.USS Canberra entered Sydney Harbour in formation with Canberra-class landing helicopter dock HMAS Canberra before mooring pierside at the Royal Australian Navy’s Fleet Base East.“We are thrilled to be here in Sydney this week, and to show this city our fast, optimally-manned ship that sails across the seas as a symbol of our navies’ dedication to each other,” said Capt. Marc Crawford, Commodore of Littoral Combat Ship Squadron ONE.

Modernizing a Fishing Vessel for Optimal Performance

Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG) is supporting O'Hara Corporation as they modernize their 204' factory trawler, Alaska Spirit. The vessel has been successfully fishing Alaska's Bering Sea since 1989 when it was converted from an offshore supply vessel to a head and gut factory trawler. O'Hara has committed to a complete vessel overhaul to improve habitability, efficiency and optimize vessel performance.The multi-year project kicked off in 2017, shortly after O'Hara acquired the vessel and selected EBDG as their designated engineering partner.

MHI to Build Two Cruise Ships for Carnival

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) began construction today at its Nagasaki Shipyard and Machinery Works on the first of two new generation cruise ships for AIDA Cruises, the German cruise company part of Costa Group, Europe's largest cruise company member of Carnival Corporation & plc. MHI said the two new ships, which will incorporate an array of the world's leading-edge environmental technologies, are scheduled for delivery in the spring of March 2015 and 2016 respectively.

1942 - Carrier aircraft sink Japanese carrier Shoho during Battle of Coral Sea. The first day of the carrier battle of Coral Sea, May 7 1942, saw the Americans searching for carriers they knew were present and the Japanese looking for ones they feared might be in the area. The opposing commanders, U.S. Rear Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher and Japanese Vice Admiral Takeo Takagi and Rear Admiral Tadaichi Hara, endeavored to "get in the first blow", a presumed prerequisite to victory (and to survival) in a battle between heavily-armed and lightly-protected aircraft carriers.

American P&I Club 100 Day Initiative

Shipbuilding Cooperation Between China and Japan

Cooperation between China and Japan on shipbuilding technology opens a new chapter; SINOPACIFIC Shipbuilding Group has joined hands with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to start the optimization of the CROWN MHI 82 bulk carrier design. On March 12, SINOPACIFIC Shipbuilding Group Chairman and CEO Mr. Simon Liang and Mr. Hisashi Hara, Representative Director(Member of The Board), Executive Vice President and Head of Shipbuilding & Ocean Development from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) signed a joint development agreement on the planned design optimization of the CROWN MHI 82 in Tokyo, Japan. This is a new attempt of technical cooperation between Chinese and Japanese shipbuilding enterprises.

NOAA Vessels to Moor in Seattle

The Port of Seattle announced that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will moor vessels in Seattle this winter. The agency announced that its ships will be docked at the Port of Seattle's Terminal 30 facility, which is leased and operated by Cruise Terminals of America. The vessels will moor at the facility from November through March of 2008. NOAA's Marine Operations Center - Pacific has been located on Fairview Avenue East on the shore of Lake Union since 1963. In July of 2006, two piers on the property were damaged in a fire. Since that time, the federal research agency has moored its four vessels at Sand Point, on Lake Washington, and at Federal Center South on the East Duwamish Waterway.
