Siemens Launches Scalable Electric Drive

Siemens is expanding its portfolio of green ship propulsion systems by adding a new member to the Siship BlueDrive Family: Siship BlueDrive Eco. Besides by integrating battery systems produced in-house, the company is now able to offer a scalable and flexible solution to cover every propulsion requirement, with different power graduations for small to medium-sized propulsion systems from 5 kilowatts (kW) in auxiliary mode up to 5.5 megawatts (MW) for the main drive – from Siship BlueDrive Eco through to Siship BlueDrive PlusC. The solutions can be configured to individual customer specifications and are based on practically tested standardized components such as Sinamics converters.

Australia Names 'Ferry McFerryFace' to Crew's Dismay

(Image: NSW Transport)

Australia â€śbrings a smile” with Ferry McFerryface, but not everyone gets the joke. In the grand tradition of Britain’s Boaty McBoatface, Australian authorities are christening one of the ferries crossing Sydney’s world famous harbor Ferry McFerryface, but some union workers aren’t amused. The New South Wales state government announced the name for one of its six new ferries on Tuesday after a public vote, with Transport Minister Andrew Constance deeming it “one for the kids”.

Ferry Runs Aground in Lynn Harbor

Ferry Cetacea ran aground about a quarter of a mile from the pier in Lynn Harbor, Massachusetts yesterday, with 13 passengers and four crew aboard, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) reported. Coast Guard crews from Station Point Allerton launched a rescue crew aboard a 47-foot motor life boat to provide a safety zone and stand by to assist if the situation deteriorated. Safety Improvements Planned for Friday Harbor Ferry Terminal

The Friday Harbor ferry terminal will get a safety upgrade thanks to a $240,000 grant from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The Washington State Department of Transportation Ferries Division (WSF) will use the funding to build a barrier and gate to keep walk-on customers separated from vehicle traffic during ferry loading and off-loading. The project will also include signs to direct foot passengers to the terminal exit, town landmarks, and pick-up/drop-off areas. “Safety is our top priority…

News: SWATH Design Boasts Flexibility, Efficiency

Alan C. McClure Associates (ACMA) has completed the design development of a new SWATH (Small Waterplane Area, Twin Hull) vessel that the designer says lends itself to a variety of operation options. The proposed vessel will be 92 ft. long with a 46.6-ft. beam and a displacement of 240 LT. The new vessel's design is based on a variation of the technology used by ACMA's in the development of the 120-ft. Stillwater River, a SWATH crewboat built for Trico Marine Operators, Inc., that has been successfully operating for Petrobras offshore Brazil for the past five years. The operational speed of ACMA's new SWATH has been reduced from more than 28 knots to 20 - 25 knots to accommodate a variety of conventional propulsion system combinations (diesel/reduction-gear w/CP or FP wheels).

WSF Begins Temporary Slip Removal

Work will begin soon to remove the temporary slip at the Friday Harbor Ferry Terminal. The project was put out to bid on August 22, 2005 and the contract to remove the temporary slip and construct a tie-up slip was awarded to General Construction Company of Poulsbo. Work is tentatively scheduled to begin on November 28, 2005, and is expected to be complete by the end of February 2006. The slip was always meant to be temporary, as it was built with bare steel that will corrode rapidly in the marine environment. Permit conditions require that WSF remove the slip and that in-water work be completed by March 21, 2006.
