Top U.S. Gulf of Mexico oil producer Shell said on Thursday it halted production at three U.S. Gulf of Mexico deepwater platforms after a leak shut two pipelines connecting the platforms, adding it expected pipeline service to resume on Friday.A failure at an onshore pipeline junction in Louisiana leaked about two barrels of oil, said Chett Chiasson, executive director of Greater Lafourche Port Commission. The Harbor Police Department (HPD) of the Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) named Cedric Turner to serve as Captain of the specialized law enforcement agency. Turner has served in law enforcement for 26 years and 20 of those working up the ranks in HPD. As Captain, Turner will be responsible for running the day-to-day operations of HPD’s Patrol Division, which is critical in HPD’s mission in ensuring the safety and security throughout port property and waterways within the Port’s three-parish jurisdiction of Jefferson, Orleans and St.

The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) has named Assistant Chief Melanie Montroll as Chief of its Harbor Police Department (HPD), following a rigorous national search that included a number of highly qualified candidates. She is a 21-year veteran of the force and will serve as the department’s first woman Chief of Police. Coast Guard responds to deadly New York harbor pilot accident.On December 30, 2019 at approximately 0430, Sandy Hook Pilot Captain Dennis R. Sherwood was involved in an incident while boarding a container vessel inbound to the Port of New York & New Jersey. He sustained injuries after falling from an accommodation ladder and was evacuated to a local hospital where his injuries proved to be fatal. Prior to the incident, Captain Sherwood had been piloting vessels in and out of the Port of New York & New Jersey for over 35 years.The incident is being investigated by the United States Coast Guard.

The Port of San Diego's Harbor Police Department will assist the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed April 10, 2015. The MOU was signed by Ambassador William R. Brownfield, Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of INL; and Harbor Police Chief Mark Stainbrook as part of the Harbor Police’s efforts to support foreign port security and fight international crime. Sea lions are a common sight in San Diego Bay, but a sea lion wandering a busy roadway and then ending up in the back of a patrol car is slightly rarer. The San Diego Harbor Police Department received a call on February 18 of a sea lion in the roadway of Harbor Island Drive, near a local restaurant. Encountering the uninjured sea lion, responding officers Christine Sperry and Luis Martinez used salmon to lure the adult female sea lion into the water. Within minutes the wayward sea lion was back up on the sidewalk and nudging Officer Sperry in with her nose.

Admiral Paul Zukunft, Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, visited the Port of San Diego’s administrative offices on February 12. The Commandant was in town to participate in the 2015 Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association /U.S. Naval Institute Conference held at the San Diego Convention Center. During his visit to the port, the Commandant participated in a briefing that included Dan Malcolm, Chairman of the Board of Port Commissioners; Acting President and CEO John Bolduc; Acting Chief of Harbor Police Mark Stainbrook and other senior Port staff members.

San Diego firefighters knocked down an electrical fire that broke out Sunday aboard the 'Dorado Discovery', a 321-foot British-flagged research and survey ship docked at the 10th Avenue Marine Terminal, reports 'U~T San Diego', quoting city fire officials. The fire began in a storage area of the ship and caused minor damage, but it could take weeks to repair, reported the news channel citing Tanya Castaneda, a spokeswoman for the Port District and Harbor Police. The Coast Guard's investigation might delay the ship's scheduled Oct. 16th departure.

Coast Guard Sector Honolulu received an official request from the Hawaii Department of Health to assist with the response to the molasses spill in Honolulu Harbor Friday. “The Coast Guard is prepared to bring all the requested resources to this incident to support our state and local partner agencies” said Capt. Shannon Gilreath, captain of the port Honolulu. “We have been working closely with state partners since the spill occurred to offer advice and resources. The Coast Guard began supporting the response Monday morning when investigators from Sector Honolulu responded to a report of discolored water in the harbor. Since then, the Coast Guard has held daily meetings with the lead State agency, Hawaii Department of Health.

State officials in Hawaii consider there's little they can do to clean up a 223,000-gallon molasses spill that has killed thousands of fish, as swimmers, surfers and snorkelers were being warned that the massive die-off could attract sharks. A cracked pipe on a loading jetty caused the spill, according to NPR. The request for federal assistance allows the Coast Guard to support the lead agency with a wide variety of resources to include specialized response personnel, boats and equipment from the Coast Guard and other Federal Agencies. The captain of the port requested support from the Coast Guard’s National Strike Force for water sampling and monitoring and is currently coordinating with technical specialists from the EPA to help assess additional response mitigation strategies.

In support of Super Bowl XLVII, a team of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies begin maritime safety and security operations on the lower Mississippi River, Monday. Response boats, patrol vehicles and enforcement personnel from more than 16 law enforcement agencies will conduct maritime security operations in the downtown New Orleans area and at the Port of New Orleans. All agencies will work together within a unified command, lead by the Port of New Orleans Harbor Police Department and the U.S. Coast Guard, to provide a coordinated safe and secure environment for Super Bowl participants and the general public. This level of interagency coordination for the Super Bowl is the culmination of several months of planning involving all law enforcement agencies.

NIGERIA: Chemical tanker approached off Port Harcourt Fairway Buoy. Seven heavily armed robbers in a speed boat approached the tanker, bridge crew raised the alarm, increased speed and set course away from land.

The formal establishment of an AMS Committee is one of the key measures of Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002. As we commemorate the first anniversary of the Department of Homeland Security, this event marks a significant milestone in the effort to secure one of the Nation’s most strategic ports. The Coast Guard Captain of the Port responded this morning to a report that explosive-detecting dogs had alerted security officials at pier 2 of a suspicious pallet of boxes. Two different dogs had singled out a particular pallet for potentially containing explosive devices or residue. The pallet contained loosely packaged Fed-EX boxes from a shipment originating in Las Vegas, NV. The pallet was due to be on loaded on the cruise ship Crystal Harmony this morning. In response to the reports, the Captain of the Port closed the Port of Honolulu at 8:00 this morning to incoming and outgoing marine traffic. This measure was enacted as a precaution until the pallet can be further inspected by officials from the Honolulu Police Department Bomb Squad, Customs, Harbor Police, and the FBI.

It was a busy night Friday, May 3, as several mariners required the assistance of the Coast Guard units around the New Orleans and Galveston, Texas, areas. A 23-ft. safeboat from Station Grand Isle, La., was dispatched to assist a 45-ft. pleasure craft taking on water in Timbalier Bay, about10 p.m. Friday. The crew of the safeboat passed a de-watering pump to the five-man crew of the First Class, who were able to safely transit to the pier at Coco Marina. The Coast Guard crew followed to ensure their safe transit and mooring. In a separate case, a 41-ft. utility boat from Station Galveston safely transported a man suffering from abdominal pains with a weak pulse and shallow respiration from a tanker about 2 a.m. Saturday.

Governor Schwarzenegger joins Admiral Kevin J. Eldridge, USCG, Commander, Eleventh Coast Guard District and Matt Bettenhausen, Director, Office of Homeland Security, State of California, onboard a UTB-41 Coast Guard boat to observe coast guard port security drills. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced a $5 million grant to improve port security at 11 of California's ports during a visit to the San Diego Coast Guard Joint Operations Center. "In California, we have many threat targets, including large urban areas, mass transit, railways, and international icons like the Golden Gate Bridge," said Gov. Schwarzenegger. California's ports bring in 43 percent of the nation's cargo containers.
