Transas CEO Calls for Big Data Standardization

Frank Coles, Transas CEO, has delivered a keynote speech calling for the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to set standards of compliance for the communication connections between ship and shore or else create a significant cyber security risk. The speech on Connected Ships & Cybersecurity was delivered at the Shipping Insight Fleet Optimization Conference which took place in Stamford, CT. on October 18-19. Cybersecurity is without a doubt a highly-debated topic in the maritime industry.

Pole Star Upgrades its DSAS Ship Security Alert System

Pole Star Space Applications Ltd,  provider of fleet management, ship security and asset monitoring systems, has released an upgrade to its DSAS Ship Security Alert System, featuring new hardware from SkyWave Mobile Communications. The upgraded DSAS is designed to provide continuity of service and a smooth upgrade path for Pole Star SSAS customers as well as future-proofing their investment by routeing data traffic via the IsatData Pro network. The new Pole Star DSAS has been engineered to build on the quality of service provided by earlier transceivers, many of which are still in service from first installation. The new SkyWave IsatData Pro utilizes the global Inmarsat I-4 satellite constellation to provide remote management and communication with mobile and fixed assets worldwide.

Vizada and Thrane & Thrane Announce Partnership

Vizada, a provider of global satellite-based mobility services, and hardware manufacturer Thrane & Thrane have signed a partnership agreement to launch a new broadband offer to the maritime market. Via their shared distribution channels, the partnership will offer shipping companies a maritime mobile broadband package that combines Thrane & Thrane hardware with Vizada VSAT and MSS services and solutions. The maritime mobile broadband package includes Thrane & Thrane’s SAILOR 900 VSAT and SAILOR FleetBroadband terminals combined with Vizada’s Pharostar VSAT and FleetBroadband service and the recently launched Vizada XChange, a unified platform that provides a secure and controlled communications environment for voice and broadband data.

Inmarsat: F77 Extends Offerings

Inmarsat, the original mobile satcom provider for the maritime industry, has been riding the crest of a wave recently, with users at an all-time high, overall 99.9 per cent satellite reliability and the launch of its Fleet F77, Mobile ISDN and Mobile Packet Data services for the maritime community. Ruth Ling reports on what's new and what lies on the horizon. Twenty years ago, a revolution hit the maritime industry. Satellite communications became available to ships at sea. Back in 1982, when Inmarsat began offering onboard satellite communications, its first and only system was Inmarsat A, which offered voice, facsimile, telex and data services. After nine years of successful service and expansion into most maritime sectors, Inmarsat began offering Inmarsat C.
