Avalon Freight Services Redefines the Shortsea Shipping Formula

Vigor Delivers ATB Tug to Harley Marine

Vigor’s Seattle shipyard recently delivered a 95’ x 38’ x 16’, 3,000 hp ATB Twin Screw Tug, Dale R Lindsey, to Harley Marine Services Inc. Designed by Elliot Bay Design Group for primary operation in Alaska, the ATB tug utilizes an Articouple FRM-43M coupler system to pair with the 20,000 barrel oil barge, Petro Mariner. It features a raised aluminum pilothouse for optimal visibility built by Kvichak. Dale R Lindsey is the 11th vessel built by Vigor for its long-time customer, Harley Marine.

Harley Orders Two Newbuild Tank Barges from Vigor

Sixty-Five Roses is a 422’x 76’ tank barge with capacity of 83,600 barrels presently employed  in U.S. West Coast Trade under Charter to a Major Oil Company. Built by Vigor in Portland, Ore., the barge is of double hull design and constructed to exceed OPA 90 Double Hull Standards. Fully loaded she displaces 13,150 Long Tons DWT. She is certified ABS Maltese Cross A1 Oceans.

Vigor Fab has been awarded a contract to build two 83,000 bbl. tank barges for Harley Marine Services, Inc. The 422’x 76’ x 27’ tank barges, designed by Elliott Bay Design Group to be part of articulated tug and barge configurations, will be among the largest vessels constructed for Harley Marine’s fleet. Construction will begin this month at Vigor’s 60-acre shipyard in Portland, Ore. With an 800 foot buildway, 600 ton gantry crane, and 360,000 square feet of covered fabrication areas, the yard is well equipped to handle large projects like these.

Harley Tractor Tug 'Robert Franco' Launched

Nichols Brothers Boat Builders has launched the first of two tractor tugs they have contracted with Harley Marine Services. The new tugboat will be delivered to Harley Marine Services in mid April 2013. The Tractor Tug, a Jensen Maritime of Seattle, Washington design, is ABS load line certified. It has two Caterpillar 3516C diesel engines coupled to the Rolls Royce z-drive system and it is also equipped with two Cat C9 generators. The propulsion package will produce over 90 tons of bollard pull with a combined horsepower of 6,770, giving the tug exceptional pulling power and maneuverability. The vessel is outfitted with Mackay Marine Electronics, Technicold by Northern Lights HVAC system, two Markey winches, one forward for ship assist and one aft for towing and a Smith Berger tow pin aft.

Harley Marine NY Reduces Emissions

Harley Marine NY, a subsidiary company of Harley Marine Services, Inc. is actively reducing emissions in New York Harbor. The HMS Liberty, a tug boat part of the Harley Marine NY Fleet, was repowered at Feeney Shipyard in Kingston, New York. During the repower, the 1970's vintage Detroit 149 Series engines and 3-71 generator sets were replaced with new, EPA Tier II Compliant, Cummins QSK38 engines and John Deere powered generator sets. Replacing the older engines and generators on the tug will reduce NoX and particulate emissions in the New York Harbor by 40 tons per year. This will also result in fuel savings as the newer equipment will be more efficient.

ABS Council Adds Members

At the recent ABS Council meeting, 31 prominent members of the shipping and offshore industries were elected as new members of the prominent international classification society. Harley Marine Eco-Tug

Harley Marine Services, Inc. is reducing greenhouse gases, NOx, particulates, and diesel borne air toxics by converting existing harbor tugs to eco-tugs using ultra low emissions technology. Working together with the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach to secure funding through their Technology Advancement Program, the M/V Maverick, a Millennium Maritime, Inc. harbor tug, will be the first tug of the Harley Marine fleet to undertake this “green” clean air retrofit technology. The project involves conversion of existing Port and Starboard engines from mechanical to electronic configuration. The electronic upgrade is expected to achieve Tier II emission limits, which are the limits imposed for new marine engines.

Harley Marine Goes Green

Harley Marine continues to implement its “Harley Marine Goes Green” program, including: company-wide ISO 14001 and ABS SQE Certification; exceeding compliance with local, state and federal environmental regulations and requirements; harbor tug fleet conversion to eco-tugs using ultra low emissions technology; and, their own patented self-contained Vapor Recovery Unit used during petroleum loading operations to reduce hydrocarbon emissions from oil and tank barges. Celebrating 75 Years of Ship Design

In 2005, Robert Allan Ltd will celebrate its 75th year of continuous business as a firm of Consulting Naval Architects. From its base in Vancouver, the company serves the international marine community with a wide range of specialized workboat designs, as it has done since its inception, through three generations of family ownership. The company has experienced considerable growth in the past decade, and currently has more than 30 vessels to its designs under construction around the world, including a myriad of high-performance tugboats of all types, fireboats, crewboats, patrol craft, ferries, and barges. Harley Marine was Pivotal Private Equity Speaker at Marine Money

Harley Franco, Founder and Chairman of Pacific Coast operator Harley Marine Services, Inc., was a pivotal private equity speaker at a recent Marine Money conference held in New York City. Mr. Franco represented the private equity position on a finance panel consisting of public maritime companies including Overseas Shipholding Group and Horizon Line. In his presentation, Mr. Franco outlined the various finance structures utilized which enabled him to remain private. This new finance vehicle, coupled with strong and positive banking relationships, allowed the corporate growth necessary to stay private with no ownership effect. “Being a privately held company enables us to take advantage of opportunities presented to us today, which position us for tomorrow.” stated Mr. Franco.

Manitowoc Wins Harley Marine Contract

The Manitowoc Company, Inc. won a new construction contract from Harley Marine Services, Inc. to build an ocean-class, double-hull, hot oil tank barge. The 80,000-barrel capacity barge, which is scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2006, will measure 369 ft. (112 m) in length, 78 ft. (24 m) in width, and 33 ft. (10 m) in molded depth. The contract includes an option for a second identical vessel. The Harley barge is the tenth double-hull tank barge built by the Manitowoc Marine Group. The vessel features a flush deck design and is equipped with an onboard heating system to maintain consistent cargo temperatures of 160 degrees. It will also be ABS, U.S. Coast Guard, and OPA-90 compliant.

The Manitowoc Company announced that its Bay Shipbuilding subsidiary has been awarded a new construction contract from Harley Marine Services, Inc. to build an ocean-class, double-hull, hot oil tank barge. The 80,000-barrel capacity barge, which is scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2006, will measure 369 ft. in length, 78 ft. in width, and 33 ft. in molded depth. The Harley contract also includes an option for a second identical vessel. Other contract terms were not disclosed. The Harley barge is the tenth double-hull tank barge built by the Manitowoc Marine Group. The vessel features a flush deck design and is equipped with an onboard heating system to maintain consistent cargo temperatures of 160 degrees F. It will also be ABS, U.S. Coast Guard, and OPA- 90 compliant.

MARCO Shipyards Signs Local Contract

MARCO Shipyard Seattle signed a contract to build a new tug for Harley Marine Services Inc., of Seattle, the parent company of Olympic Tug & Barge. Recently, MARCO completed a series of nine tractor tugs operating in Alaska, California, and Hawaii. Measuring 105 ft., the new tug will be used by Harley Marine as a ship assist and towing service for the West Coast. Except for some pilothouse modifications and the addition of barge fendering, the tug will be similar to Gyrfalcon, owned and operated by Harley Marine in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. Scheduled for a February 2000 delivery, the tug will be powered by twin Caterpillar 3516B diesels, providing a combined 4,400-hp driving Ulstein 1650H Z-drive units, each fitted with Ulstein's nozzle and skewed Kaplan-style propellers.
