Oakley Buys Two Maritime e-Learning Biz

Oakley Capital Investments Ltd has acquired majority stakes in two maritime e-learning providers from Norwegian private equity firm Herkules Private Equity Fund IV and US satellite company KVH Industries.Oakley, the private equity investment company contributed GBP25 million, through its Oakley Capital IV fund to buy the stakes in SG MidCo AS, also known as Seagull, and Videotel Marine Asia Ltd and Super Dragon Ltd, collectively known as Videotel.Over the past 40 years, Videotel and Seagull have established themselves as the best-in-class providers of e-learning to the maritime sector globally. Woodhead Appointed Sr V. P., Training & Content, KVH

KVH Industries, Inc. (Nasdaq: KVHI), announced today that Mark Woodhead has been named to the newly created position of KVH senior vice president for training and content, effective on the first of January 2017. In this position, Mr. Woodhead will direct KVH’s market-leading maritime crew welfare, safety, and productivity services, which include Videotel maritime training packages – currently in use on more than 12,000 vessels worldwide – and numerous news and entertainment brands, such as NEWSlink – currently used by more than 9,000 vessels globally. Mr. Woodhead has been managing director of KVH’s news and entertainment brands since 2013 and will succeed Nigel Cleave, following the planned decision by Videotel’s CEO to retire at the end of the year. The private ISWAN event on 21 November will take place in an appropriately maritime venue: The Ward Room of the HMS "President", a former Royal Navy warship docked in London and converted to a club and event space. George, the author of the acclaimed book, "Deep Sea and Foreign Going: Inside Shipping, the Invisible Industry that Brings You 90% of Everything," published in September 2013, is a lecturer and former ship master who received the MBE in 2000 for services to maritime safety. George spent five weeks on a containership while researching "Deep Sea and Foreign Going," which describes the challenging working conditions onboard commercial ships. Her book has received attention both inside and outside the shipping industry for raising awareness of seafarers' welfare.

Maritime Industry Responds to Typhoon in the Philippines

Shipowner groups, unions and welfare organizations are pulling together in response to the devastating effects of Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines. One of the main concerns is for Filipino seafarers, who represent more than 20% of the world's seafarers, to be able to contact their families and loved ones back home. Already, the Mission to Seafarers and Sailors Society are providing free phone cards, sims and wifi to Filipino seafarers who visit their centers all over the world. The Seafarers' Emergency Fund, administered by ISWAN, is providing funds for seafarer centers around the world to facilitate free phone calls and wifi for Filipino seafarers to call back home.

KVH CEO Outlines New Plans at Nor-Shipping 2013

KVH Industries, Inc., is implementing a detailed four-part strategy aimed to bring a variety of economical & convenient content services to mariners for the first time. Martin Kits van Heyningen, President and CEO of KVH Industries, gave details of his plans at the Digital Ship Maritime CIO Forum at the current Nor-Shipping expo in Oslo. The Four-Part Strategy Includes enhancing mini-VSAT Broadband Network Capacity, introducing new TracPhone V-IP Terminals with integrated CommBox Modem (ICM), launching new IP-MobileCast content delivery service, and acquiring leading content provider Headland Media. "Our goal is to offer our customers economical access to all the data they want and need onboard their vessels," concluded Mr. Kits van Heyningen.
