Oldendorff Orders Two Ultramax Bulk Carriers

German shipowner Oldendorff Carriers revealed on Tuesday that earlier this year it ordered two 61,300 dwt Ultramax newbuilds from Dalian Cosco Kawasaki Ship Engineering Co Ltd (DACKS) for delivery July 2022.The 61,300 Ultramaxes are of the Kawasaki eco design, of which Oldendorff had previously built nine units at DACKS and sister yard NACKS until 2019. Oldendorff Names First of Four Hantong Newbuilds

German shipowner Oldendorff Carriers said the first of its four Newcastlemax newbuilds on order at China's Hantong Shipyard was named on Monday. The new 208,000 dwt bulk carrier Henry Oldendorff is scheduled to be delivered on Thursday. Torqeedo Partners with Sentinel Marine Solutions and WhisperPower

Torqeedo has announced strategic agreements to integrate Sentinel Boat Monitors and WhisperPower smart power generation systems into its electric boat propulsion product offerings. The announcements were made in a press conference at the Dusseldorf International Boat Show Jan. 23. The Sentinel Boat Monitors are now fully integrated with Torqeedo’s Cruise, Travel and Ultralight electric propulsion systems. The Sentinel app allows remote monitoring of the vessel’s location and onboard systems, and provides automatic alerts of any malfunctions and alarms.

EU Approves Klesch Refinery Purchase

Regulator sees no competition concerns; Klesch announced purchase in July. EU regulators cleared U.S. entrepreneur Gary Klesch's purchase of the Milford Haven oil refinery on the coast of Wales, the European Commission said in a statement on Friday. Klesch agreed in July to buy the 135,000 barrels per day refinery from Murphy Oil for an undisclosed sum and said the struggling plant would restart operations. It refines gasoline, diesel, fuel oil, jet fuel, LPG and propylene, as does the Heide Refinery in Germany, also owned by the Klesch Group. But the European Commission, the EU executive, concluded there would be no antitrust concerns as any overlap was limited and the Milford Haven refinery would face strong competition from other players.

Descartes' Solution Transforms Tank Terminal

Descartes Systems Group transformed its core business from the storage of grains to the storage of oils with the help of Descartes' advanced European customs connectivity and compliance capabilities. "In the European oil storage business, the communication and exchange of documents with customs authorities is mission critical, much more so than with grain storage. With excise amounts in the millions of euros and operating permits at stake, the clearance and duty declaration process needs to be completely accurate," said Charles Smissaert, Managing Director at Botlek Tank Terminal.

Renovations Sought at Kiel Canal

In the course of a press panel discussion in Hamburg hosted by Port of Hamburg Marketing, port and business representatives from centers along the Kiel Canal and the Hamburg Port Authority jointly called for the reconstruction without delay of the fifth lock chamber and the renovation of the two existing large lock chambers at Brunsbüttel. In the medium term, business in the port and industry regard the straightening out of the Eastern stretch of the canal and its deepening by one meter as indispensable measures.

Dijkstra Wins HISWA Award

Gerard Dijkstra of Dijkstra & Partners Naval Architects is the winner of this year’s HISWA Excellence Award. The naval architect received the award from the Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs Maria van der Hoeven at the World Forum in The Hague during the Maritime Awards Gala on 6 November. Coming from a racing background, Gerard Dijkstra has been a key player in the revival of the J-class. Other nominees for the award were Henk de Vries of Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw (Feadship) and Lex Keuning from the Delft University of Technology. The HISWA Excellence Award honours the most prominent and pioneering innovator in the watersports industry. This year marked the second time it was granted by the HISWA Holland Marine Industry during the Maritime Awards Gala.
