Today in U.S. 1821 - Lt. Robert F. Stockton sails from Boston for Africa to carry out his orders to help stop the international slave trade. 1943 - Aircraft from USS Ranger sink five German ships and damage three in Operation Leader, the only U.S. Navy carrier operation in northern European waters during World War II. 1952 - Task Force 77 aircraft encounter MIG-15 aircraft for the first time. 1976 - USS Jonas Ingram (DD-938) rescues seven survivors of a Finnish motor craft that sank in the Baltic Sea.

USS John S. McCain Replenishes USS Lassen

By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Byron C. Linder, Det. Sailors of the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) provided needed personnel, repair parts, food stores and mail to USS Lassen (DDG 82), March 15. At sunrise, the two warships met in the and commenced vertical replenishment at sea (VERTREP). The embarked team of Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron Light (HSL) 51 provided helo support to move the goods. John S. McCain's Supply Department arranged for the delivery to the Lassen due to Lassen's short-notice operational tasking. Supply Officer, Lt. Todd Malaki, John S. McCain, noted the ship's ability to fill a role normally assigned to a replenishment ship was efficiently executed. "This was planned in a quick e-mail," Malaki said.

Second CARAT Phase Underway in Thailand

The Thailand phase of the exercise Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) series officially began June 20 at the Royal Thai Navy’s (RTN) Lam Tien Naval Base Frigate Squadron 2 pier with a look back at the exercise’s unofficial and solemn beginning June 11. On that day, Sailors from the CARAT task group ship USS Salvor (ARS 52) began six days of dive operations on wreckage in the Gulf of Thailand believed to be that of the lost World War II submarine USS Lagarto (SS 371). “U.S. Navy divers from Salvor, along with a Royal Thai Navy diver, were able to visit the wreck, a necessary step toward positive identification, thereby helping us fulfill our commitment to honor our war dead,” Alexander A. Arvizu, deputy chief of mission at the U.S.

Navy Soldier Rescued in Persian Gulf

Helicopter and boat crews from USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) rescued one of the aircraft carrier’s crew members after the sailor fell overboard while the ship was conducting maritime security operations (MSO) in the Persian Gulf, according to a Navy Newsstand report. An investigation is underway. The sailor fell overboard at approximately 2:15 a.m. during routine MSO. The ship and aircraft from Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8 immediately started rescue operations. A helicopter from Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron (HS) 3 returned the Sailor to the deck of the carrier at 3:10 a.m. Medical personnel evaluated the Sailor, who was determined to be in good condition.

USS George Washington Rescues Fishermen off FL Coast

Four people rescued from a burning fishing vessel were treated on board USS George Washington (CVN 73) yesterday (Feb. 2) for mild hypothermia and second degree burns before being taken to medical facilities in Jacksonville, Fla. A fifth victim died, and the cause of his death will be determined by a civilian medical examiner in Jacksonville, Fla. One of the survivors was identified as an U. S. Navy Sailor stationed at Naval Station Mayport, Fla. The four survivors, as well as the remains of the deceased, were flown by C-2A aircraft from USS George Washington (GW) to medical facilities in Jacksonville, Fla., at approximately 3 p.m. (EST). The C-2A aircraft, assigned to the Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 40, is based at Naval Base Norfolk, Va.
