Drifting North Atlantic Chemical Tanker Taken in Tow

The Irish Naval Service patrol ship LÉ Aisling stood by the tanker 'Hellespont Charger' in rough weather at the request of the Irish Coast Guard until the arrival of the tugboat after the chemical tanker with 22 crew on board lost power on its main engines 400 miles west of Loop Head, reports Ireland's RTE News. The tanker with 15,000 tonnes of caustic soda on board was taken in tow by the tug Thrax towards the River Shannon where the cargo is desined for the Aughinish Alumina plant there. GL Names New SVP Global Sales

Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has appointed Mr Christian Freiherr von Oldershausen to the newly created position of Senior Vice President Global Sales. In his new position, Mr von Oldershausen will be responsible for enhancing global sales, working closely together with GL’s regional and area management. The appointment of Mr von Oldershausen reflects GL’s ambition to further sharpen its customer focus and continue to expand its global activities. Mr von Oldershausen will be based in GL’s Head Office in Hamburg and begins in his new role on 1 January 2012.

Ardmore Expands Fleet, Newbuild And Charters

Ardmore Shipping Ltd, the specialist tanker company, today announced that it has taken over the contracts for two newbuild vessels from Hellespont Group and, in a separate deal, has agreed to charter in two vessels from Hellespont. Ardmore, based in Cork, Ireland, has agreed to take over the newbuild contracts on two 17,000 deadweight tonnes (dwt) IMO II chemical tankers from Hellespont. The two as-yet unnamed vessels are currently being built by Sekwang Shipbuilding in South Korea and delivery is expected in April and July 2012 respectively.

Hellespont Opts for Navig8 Pool

Hamburg-based Hellespont Group has agreed with Navig8 Chemicals to enter four IMO2 tankers into the Brizo8 Pool. The ships in question are the Hellespont Centurion, Hellespont Challenger, Hellespont Charger and Hellespont Chieftain. All are 17,000dwt, built in 2009 and 2010 and are managed by Hamburg-based Hellespont Ship Management GmbH & Co KG. Hellespont has also time chartered two 2010-built 17,000dwt IMO2 tankers, Hellespont Commander and Hellespont Crusader, for one/option one year to Ardmore Shipping Ltd of Ireland.

Sanko and Hellespont Join Offshore Forces

The Sanko Steamship Co Ltd and Hellespont Group have entered into a joint venture for manning and/or shipmanagement services to Sanko’s and Hellespont’s offshore fleets through their Singapore subsidiaries. The Singapore-based joint venture company, Sanko-Hellespont Offshore Management Pte Ltd, owned by Sanko Ship Management (Singapore) Pte Ltd and Hellespont Singapore Pte Ltd on an equal partnership basis, started operations on 7 March, 2011, and is led by Captain Andrew Lidgard of Hellespont, as CEO and Mr Yasushi Hashimoto of Sanko, as Chairman.

Hellespont Strengthens German Base

The Hellespont Group strengthened its global base in Hamburg, Germany, by buying out the two minority partners in its Hamburg-based shipmanagement company and reshaping its corporate organization. The 25 percent each minority interests held by HCI Capital AG and Peter Doehle Schiffahrts KG in Hellespont Hammonia GmbH & Co KG have been bought out. Hellespont Hammonia has been renamed Hellespont Ship Management GmbH & Co KG, and is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Hellespont group parent company, which has been renamed Hellespont Deutschland GmbH.

Hellespont Extends PSV Fleet

The Hamburg-based Hellespont group has extended its fleet of platform supply vessels with the delivery of the 3,250 dwt Hellespont Dione. Built at Drydocks World, Batam, the vessel is the fifth sister ship to join the Hellespont offshore fleet. The previous four vessels were all built in Cochin, India. Marlink's Sealink (TM) for Hellespont Tankers

Marlink, the global provider of satellite communications to the maritime industry, has recently signed a new five year agreement with Hellespont Hammonia GmbH & Co. KG. The contract includes the delivery and installation of Marlink's Sealink(TM) C-band services onboard four new build chemical tankers, which are managed by Hellespont Hammonia. In addition, Marlink will provide a range of services including Prepaid Talk for crew telephony and VPN for communication between the vessels and Hellespont HQ.

ABS Adds to Membership

At the recent ABS Council meeting in N.Y., 40 prominent members of the shipping and offshore industries were elected as new members of the international classification society. Hellespont Expands into Singapore

The Hamburg-based Hellespont group has expanded its operations by opening a new company in Singapore. Hellespont Singapore Pte Ltd is responsible for developing relationships with key offshore charterers in Singapore, sourcing crews for the Hellespont-managed PSV fleet and establishing Hellespont as operators of offshore vessels in Singapore. New Chemical Tanker Joins Hellespont Fleet

Hamburg-based Hellespont Tankers has taken delivery of the Hellespont Centurion, the first of a serious of eight 17,000 dwt IMO-2 chemical tankers. Hellespont Tankers will commercially manage the vessel, which has been entered into the Hamburg-based Seatramp Intermediate Tanker Pool. Technical management will be carried out by Hellespont Hammonia. Built at Korea's Sekwang Shipbuilding yard the vessel can load fifteen different grades in epoxy coated tanks. Hellespont Centurion is now on her maiden voyage to load her first cargo in Southeast Asia for Europe.

Hellespont Launches Chemical Tanker Pool

Hamburg-based Hellespont has launched a pool for modern IMO 2 chemical/product tankers. The Seatramp Intermediate Tanker Pool will initially consist of three KG-financed and Hellespont-operated 13,000 dwt vessels, and Hellespont has committed a further eight 17,000 dwt newbuildings due between now and 2011 to the pool. Talks with other owners are at an advanced stage and the aim is to bring the pool to around thirty vessels by the end of 2010. Christian van Oldershausen, managing director of Hellespont AG, said, “In the current market consolidation of fleets into pools makes a lot of sense. It smoothes earnings, allows the pool to develop long term relationships with large charterers and balance tonnage against cargo commitments and overall increases returns as tonnage utilization rises.

Leading international classification society Bureau Veritas and French shipowner Services & Transport have developed an Ecomax tanker design intended to address all the major causes of large oil spills. The Aframax design has two independent engine rooms, power supply systems and steering gear, increased hull scantlings, reduced high tensile steel content, duplicated navigation equipment with off-track monitoring and full inerting of all ballast spaces. Euronav, Partners Buy World’s Largest Tankers

Euronav, the tanker subsidiary of the CMB group, together with partners have reached an agreement for the acquisition of four double hull ‘V plus’ ships (also known as Ultra Large Crude Carriers) of 442,500 dwt. The vessels are: Hellespont Alhambra, Hellespont Tara, Hellespont Fairfax and Hellespont Metropolis. The ships will be delivered in the course of the months of May and June 2004 and will be renamed: TI Asia, TI Europe, TI America and TI Africa. Hellespont Names First of Four Double-Hull Ulccs

Piraeus-based Hellespont Shipping Corporation will name the first of its series of four unique double-hull ulccs at a ceremony in Dubai on April 3, 2002. The 442,000 dwt vessel will be named Hellespont Alhambra. Basil Papachristidis, chairman of the Hellespont Group, says, "We are proud to set new standards with these ships. The Hellespont Alhambra is the largest double hull tanker ever built. She sets new benchmarks for safety, longevity, commercial flexibility and ease of maintenance.
