The Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association - HELMEPA received an Honorary Award by the institution Environmental Awards 2018, organized for the 5th consecutive year by Boussias Communications "for advancing environmental awareness at all levels of the shipping community since 1982 and for the voluntary environmental program HELMEPA Junior sunce 1993". The Award ceremony for best practices implemented in Greece for the protection of the environment and sustainability, took place at the Ariadne Estate in Varibobi, and was attended by more than 300 high-level representatives of both the private and public sectors. The Director General of HELMEPA, Dimitris C. Mitsatsos and the Chairman of Dubai Council for Marine & Maritime Industries (DCMMI), Mr. Khamis Juma Buamim, signed the Inaugural Declaration to the formation of UAEMEPA, the United Arab Emirates Marine Environment Protection Association. The signing ceremony took place at the beginning of the 9th Offshore Arabia Conference at Dubai in the presence of the Secretary General of IMO, Mr. Kitack Lim, UAE high standing functionaries and representatives of organizations and companies from within world shipping. HELMEPA purchased a NAUTIS DNV Class A FMB Simulator and Instructor Station for training of its fleet members. The simulator was delivered and installed by VSTEP at HELMEPA premises in Athens, Greece. The simulator purchased by HELMEPA included a NAUTIS DNV Class A FMB simulator with 240° horizontal field of view and an Instructor Station. The Nautical Institute, in cooperation with HELMEPA, launched a Greek language version of its popular free magazine, The Navigator at Posidonia. In order to promote professionalism at sea, it is vital that we recognise and support the importance of the marine navigator. The Navigator does this by providing vital information about professionalism and safety in an engaging and highly visual manner. “Navigators are not simply trained in a classroom and then sent to sea to perform their task unsupported. They need to be continually stretched and developed, both formally and informally,” said David Patraiko, Director of Projects at The Nautical Institute, speaking at the launch.

At the North American Marine Environment Protection Association’s annual Awards dinner, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd. The fourth "Parallel Event" to celebrate World Maritime Day formally and officially outside of the International Maritime Organization's London base was held in Greece on 19 and 20 September, hosted by the Government of the Hellenic Republic. Around the world, people involved with shipping are booking flights to Greece and preparing to do business at the Posidonia 2002 International Shipping Exhibition, held on the Piraeus waterfront from June 4-7, 2002. With the Greek market worth a conservative $16 billion per annum, there is plenty of incentive. The business week begins with The Posidonia Congress and a program of high level international presentations and debate, at the Megaron, Athens Concert Hall on Monday, June 3. Posidonia's attraction for exhibitors and visitors is not hard to see. Greek shipowners control the biggest fleet in the world. Their drive towards fleet renewal and regeneration is creating multi billion dollar opportunities throughout the international maritime industry.

Smoke from Europe's ships is fast becoming the biggest source of acid rain-causing sulfur pollution, a recent report said. By 2010 ships will account for 30-40 percent of total EU sulfur emissions as land-based polluters are curbed and shipping's contribution to the overall picture increases, said a recent report to the European Commission by marine consultant BMT. "Shipping hasn't so far been asked to contribute, but the world thinks it's about time," one of the report's authors Mel Davies told Reuters. The report said ships sailing through European waters produce 1.9 million tons of sulfur dioxide per year. "Shipping in European waters is the equivalent of 390 power plants of 50 megawatts running continuously," it said.

Demonstrating its fervent commitment to preserving the marine environment, the commercial maritime industry launched the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) at the World Maritime Day Observance in New York on October 25th. Consistent with the mission of MEPA’s worldwide, the overall aim of NAMEPA is to increase environmental awareness and motivation of the human element within shipping and land-based industries which have a vested interest in the marine environment. NAMEPA’s additional goal is educating the wider public and the school communities about the critical need for marine environmental protection. Both goals will be met through cooperation with domestic and international organizations and the adoption of public awareness campaigns.

The Neva-2005 International Shipping, Shipbuilding, Ports and Offshore Energy Exhibition opened in St. Petersburg on Monday. It is held for the eighth time under the auspices of the Maritime Board under the Russian government and under the patronage of the city’s Maritime Assembly.
