Bruhns Named President of Herbert Engineering

Herbert Engineering Corp. (HEC) appointed Hendrik Bruhns to succeed Spencer Schilling, who formally stepped down as the company's president on July 1.Bruhns had been serving as an executive vice president and manager of business development for HEC since January 1, 2021, and he has served on the HEC board since 2009. A trained naval architect. Bruhns comes from an 11-year commitment as president of the HEC affiliate and maritime software firm, Herbert-ABS Software Solutions LLC.

IMO/adopted guidelines for the mandatory carriage of damage stability verification instruments (software, computers, etc.) onboard all (new and existing) tankers beginning in January 2016. IMO has adopted guidelines and applicable IMO Code amendments for the mandatory carriage of damage stability verification instruments onboard new and existing tankers. Amendments to MARPOL Annex I, BCH Code, IBC Code, IGC Code and to the Survey Guidelines under HSSC to mandate the provision of a computer program capable of calculating the applicable damage stability requirements were agreed.

New Compliance Challenges for Tanker Owners

Herbert-ABS says use of an approved damage stability computer program is the “only logical option” to meet new International Maritime Organization (IMO) Damage Stability Regulations requirements for onboard damage stability verification. Herbert-ABS Software Solutions LLC has published an assessment of the impact of new damage stability regulations on tanker and gas carrier operations. Hendrik Bruhns, Herbert-ABS Software Solutions President, argues that employing an approved damage stability verification software is the most practical and cost-effective means of demonstrating compliance with the regulations. The IMO recently adopted guidelines for demonstrating compliance with the requirements for damage stability reporting in April and May 2014 during MEPC 66 and MSC 93.

Herbert-ABS Opens Korea Office

Herbert-ABS Software Solutions LLC, a company in marine regulatory, load management, salvage and ship design software, said it has opened an office in Busan to reinforce support for Korean-based shipyards, as well as improve the quality of service to this key market. Herbert-ABS also has an office in Shanghai and earlier this year expanded into Singapore. The Busan office will be led by Arnold (Woo-Sung) Cho, Marketing and Sales Manager, whose primary focus will be to strengthen relationships with the Korean yards. Cho's activities will also consist of representing Herbert-ABS at industry conferences, to include Gastech, 24-27 March in South Korea at stand G360.

Herbert-ABS Opens Singapore Office

Herbert-ABS Software Solutions LLC, a marine regulatory, load management, salvage and ship design software company, has opened an office in Singapore to reinforce service and support for Asia-based shipowners, operators and shipyards, the company said. The new office will be led by Director and Naval Architect Rob Tagg, who will expand the activities and strategic plans of Herbert Engineering and Herbert-ABS Software, primarily supporting installations and sales of its CargoMax and HECSALV software products. Herbert-ABS is a joint venture with ABS so the expansion to Singapore is also intended to leverage the strong local presence they have in Southeast Asia.
