Bruhns Named President of Herbert Engineering

(HEC) appointed Hendrik Bruhns to succeed Spencer Schilling, who formally stepped down as the company's president on July 1.Bruhns had been serving as an executive vice president and manager of business development for HEC since January 1, 2021, and he has served on the HEC board since 2009. A trained naval architect. Bruhns comes from an 11-year commitment as president of the HEC affiliate and maritime software firm, Herbert-ABS Software Solutions LLC.

Designing the New National Security Multi-Mission Vessel

For more than 100 years the U.S. has depended on State Maritime Academies (SMA) to produce USCG licensed merchant officers. The SMAā€™s have also been an important source of U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard officers, as well as trained personnel for the maritime industry and electric power industries ashore. Key to training these future deck officers and engineers has been the annual sea cruise on dedicated training vessels. The current SMA training ships, all of which were built for other purposes and later converted to be training ships, are getting old.

ABS Approves Design for GTTNAā€™s LNG Bunker Barge

GTT North America (GTTNA), the Houston-based subsidiary of French engineering and technology company Gaztransport & Technigaz SA (GTT), received approval in principle from ABS for the design of a 2,200 cu.m. liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker barge. The design incorporates GTTā€™s membrane Cargo Containment System (CCS), which is used in 70% of the global LNG carrier fleet and nearly 90% of LNG carrier projects on order. Herbert-ABS Opens Korea Office

Herbert-ABS Software Solutions LLC, a company in marine regulatory, load management, salvage and ship design software, said it has opened an office in Busan to reinforce support for Korean-based shipyards, as well as improve the quality of service to this key market. Herbert-ABS also has an office in Shanghai and earlier this year expanded into Singapore. The Busan office will be led by Arnold (Woo-Sung) Cho, Marketing and Sales Manager, whose primary focus will be to strengthen relationships with the Korean yards. Cho's activities will also consist of representing Herbert-ABS at industry conferences, to include Gastech, 24-27 March in South Korea at stand G360.

MVeP Phase 2 Seeks Authors

The Marine Vessel Environmental Performance (MVeP) Assessment was presented November 4th, 2010 at the SNAME Annual Meeting. This is the work of SNAME T&R Panel EV-10 previously Ad-hoc Panel 19. Eleanor Nick Kirtley and Tim Leach of the Glosten Associates presented to an audience of about 50. The Glosten Associates also featured MVeP at their booth in the Expo where many conference attendees were able to speak with the presenters and other participants including Matt Winkler, VP of Seaworthy Systems ā€“ Roll Royce. In Phase 1, MVeP developed a checklist of environmental impacts resulting from marine vessels. Each impact can be assessed on its own merit, and the compilation of all assessments makes clear the trade-offs of various measures giving a holistic view of the shipā€™s performance.

Climate Change Symposium Technical Program

SNAME President Keith Michel and Malcolm MacKinnon III, Chairman of the Marine Board, released the Notice of Meeting and Technical Program Schedule for the symposium on Climate Change. Climate Change and Ships, Increasing Energy Efficiency Symposium will be held February 16 and 17 at the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS) in Linthicum, Md. The symposium is organized around three themes: (1) the Energy Efficiency Design Index for new ships now under development at the IMO, (2) the cost effectiveness of market-based mechanisms applied to shipping, and, (3) technical and operational measures to increase energy efficiency on ships. Each session will consist of a series of technical presentations followed by a panel discussion with audience participation.

New SNAME PNA Book, Intact Stability Focus

SNAME Focused Panel Sessions, 2009 Meeting

The focused panel sessions at the Society of Naval Architects and Engineers (SNAME) Annual Meeting and Expo (October 21-23 at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, Rhode Island) will feature four timely topics: Electric Ships; Renewable Energy from the Oceans; Unmanned and Autonomous Ships of the Future; and Ship Efficiency in the Greenhouse Gas Era. Each two-hour panel session will be chaired and moderated by experienced SNAME members. Each session will have three leading experts who will make thirty minute presentations on their area of expertise, followed by a moderated thirty minute discussion period which will include questions and answers from the audience.

New Marine Technology: The Hallmark of SMM 2000

The SMM exhibition in Hamburg has once again proven that it is the cradle of marine technology and the grand-daddy of all marine exhibitions. On display in 12 separate halls were more than 1,300 exhibitors from more than 50 countries, launching new products and discussing business with an estimated 37,000 visitors. More telling that sheer numbers, in this case, is the feeling of the exhibition and the ubiquitous marine technology theme. The quality of attendee and exhibitor is always high, but this edition of the bi-annual exhibition seemed especially charged due to the many positives currently running throughout the full spectrum of the maritime market.
