Thome Ship Management has added to its senior management tier by appointing Steen Nygaard Madsen as Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the Thome Ship Management Tanker Fleet. Madsen will take up the position on June 1 this year, bringing with him experience in running ships, stemming from his seagoing career as well as his time with A.P Moller in Copenhagen where he was operationally responsible for a large section of its fleet. Previously, he was also Technical Director for Nordic Tankers/Herning-Shipping .

International classification society Bureau Veritas has moved ahead of the Maritime Labor Convention 2006 and set up a system to audit and certify manning agencies for seafarers. "Shipowners and managers need to be able to demonstrate they are working with properly run seafarer recruitment and manning offices," explained Claude Maillot, director, ships in service, Bureau Veritas. "When the Maritime Labour Convention comes into force it will be a requirement for organizations recruiting and placing seafarers to conform to the standards set down. Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) has fully acquired Fawley-based agency Furness Marine Services Ltd (FMS), the second major acquisition it has completed in 2004. ISS is now 12 months into its two-year plan to double the size of its business through organic growth and strategic acquisitions. Following last month’s acquisition of the Ancon depot facility in the Port of Antwerp and several mergers and acquisitions completed in 2003, that plan is well on schedule to be met or exceeded within the expected timeframe. Independent shipping agency FMS was the result of a management buyout of Furness Withy Agency in 1993. Furness Withy had held a contract with Esso since 1985 and FMS has continued working with the international oil and gas major ever since.
