The Port of Hamburg, responding to reports of bottlenecks in the supply of empty containers, conducted a flash poll this week asking shipping lines about the current situation and found that shipping lines see no appreciable scarcity of equipment in Hamburg and other German seaports, with no shortages expected to arise.According to Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM), the shipping lines mentioned several factors that provide for a stable supply of empty equipment. Most shipping companies plan their disposition of empty boxes about three to four weeks in advance.

Handling 135.1 million tons of seaborne cargoes (down one percent), Germany’s largest universal port can report a respectable result for 2018.Hamburg successfully asserted itself in a difficult environment, achieving a distinct advance on railborne seaport-hinterland transport. In 2018, this category accounted for totals of 46.8 million tons – up 2.7 percent – and 2.44 million TEU – up 4.7 percent.More than 60,000 cargo trains with around 1.6 million freight cars were handled during 2018 on the Port Railway network alone. A delegation from Hamburg was in China from 14 to 18 May, visiting companies in Zhengzhou, Shanghai and Hangzhou. Following an extensive test program in the presence of eight classification societies, the latest development in Winterthur Gas & Diesel’s Generation X low-speed diesel engine range, the X52, completed both its Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and Type Approval Test (TAT). The newly certified engine is the five-cylinder version of the 52 cm bore X52 diesel from Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD), and completion of the important TAT and FAT signals that the X52 is ready for commercial applications. Testing took place at the Shanghai engine works of WinGD licensee Hudong Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd.

Hyundai Merchant Marine (HHM), South Korean’s second largest shipping line, is believed to be looking into buying troubled carrier Hanjin Shipping's 37 container vessels, reports WSJ. HHM will be the first to look at Hanjin’s vessels, with the focus on five 13,000-container ships. But it isn’t certain HMM will find the money to buy the ships, which could go for around $90 million each. The South Korean government and Korea Development Bank (KDB), Hanjin’s biggest creditor, are believed to support HMM if the firm decided to acquire Hanjin assests. The government and creditors have already stated they will not inject any more funds except the promised money to release the containers stranded aboard Hanjin fleet across the world.

On 19 May, Ziemelblazma Culture Palace in Riga, the Latvian capital was the venue for a meeting between numerous representatives of the Ports of Liepaja, Riga, Ventspils, Lübeck, Kiel and Hamburg. This was hosted by the three Latvian ports and Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM). For Marina Basso Michael, Head of Market Development for the Baltic Region and Eastern Europe for HHM, and Axel Mattern, CEO of HHM, Riga was an excellent place to hold the first “German-Latvian Maritime Forum”. The two HHM representatives pointed out that current topics and challenges on the overall economic development of the Baltic region closely link all the ports participating in the event.

Germany’s largest universal port reported the effects of weakened Chinese foreign trade plus the steep downturn in trade with Russia during the first nine months of the year. Totaling 104.6 million tons, seaborne cargo throughput in Hamburg was down 4.8 percent from last year, despite higher bulk cargo handling in the first three quarters of 34.3 million, up 8.7 percent. Meanwhile, container throughput in the first nine months totaled 6.7 million TEU, down by 9.2 percent. The downward trend in container traffic with Russia appears to have ceased and stability to be setting in.

The first Wärtsilä two-stroke engine with a high pressure SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system manufactured in China has been introduced. The system is fitted to a 5-cylinder Wärtsilä RT-flex58T-D 2-stroke, low speed engine produced at the Hudong Heavy Machinery Co Ltd (HHM) facilities. The SCR reactor was also manufactured by HHM. This is the first SCR system that complies with the IMO’s Tier III regulations for engine emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx). The Wärtsilä engine with SCR is to be installed in a new 22,000 dwt multi-purpose vessel currently under construction at the Ouhua shipyard on behalf of China Navigation Co (CNCo). The ship, which is scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of this year, has been designed to allow sufficient space for the fitting of the SCR.

The Port of Hamburg achieved its best-ever result in 2014, reporting total throughput of 145.7 million tons, representing growth of 4.8 percent. Up by 6.1 percent at 102.7 million tons, general cargo throughput was outstanding. A 1.7 percent increase in bulk cargo throughput to 43 million tons also contributed to the new record for Germany’s largest universal port. In 2014 the Port of Hamburg set a new record for seaborne cargo handling. Never before had such cargo volumes been loaded and discharged in the Port of Hamburg.

MAN Diesel & Turbo renewed its contract with Chinese two-stroke licensee, China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) at a ceremony in Beijing on February 2, 2015. The agreement runs for the next 10 years and covers the production of low-speed engines at CSSC affiliates: CSSC – MES Diesel Co., Ltd (CMD), Hudong Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd (HHM) and CSSC Marine Power Co., Ltd (CMP). Klaus Engberg, Senior Vice President and Head of MAN Diesel & Turbo Two- Stroke Licensing said, “We have enjoyed a long, close cooperation with our Chinese partner, CSSC, that stretches all the way back to 1980.

With total throughput of around 110 million tons, the Port of Hamburg set a new record in the first nine months of 2014. Almost all throughput segments contributed to a growth of 5.7 percent. Container handling, which dominates in Hamburg as a universal port, also achieved a record mark of 7.4 million TEU (20-ft standard containers). Gaining 6.4 percent here, Hamburg is growing faster than competing ports in Northern Europe. These reported average growth of 1.9 percent in total throughput and of 4 percent for container handling.

With the opening of a representative office in North-Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), the second most important region of the German market for Hamburg, the Port of Hamburg’s internationally active marketing organization is making a point. From July 18, Port of Hamburg Marketing’s Representative Office (West) will be located in Dortmunder Hafen AG’s head office. The operational parameters for the high-volume and heavy goods shipments into the Port of Hamburg, generating such significant added value, are in need of sustained improvement through efficient infrastructure and lean authorization procedures. Such is the call from the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, der Unternehmensverband Hafen Hamburg (UVHH), Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM) and der Verband Straßengüterverkehr und Logistik Hamburg (VSH). “Three out of four machines manufactured in Germany go for export, and it is therefore essential to secure the access to main traffic routes and overseas ports,” stated Fritz Horst Melsheimer, President of the Chamber of Commerce.

The French shipping company CMA CGM is expanding its range of liner services from Hamburg and including Black Sea ports in its schedule for the first time. Today, the CMA CGM Lavender sails on the extended FEMEX 1 Northern Europe-Mediterranean full container service from HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai in Hamburg. Passing through the Bosphorus, for the first time she will also be calling at the Black Sea ports of Samsun (Turkey), Novorossiysk (Russia) and Constanta (Rumania). This makes FEMEX 1 the only container liner service between Northern Europe and the Black Sea.

The EU-subsidized logistics project Amber Coast Logistics (ACL) has made its first appearance at Belarusian Transport Week, which was held just recently in Minsk. ACL had a stand of its own and offered a coaching workshop, concentrating on learning from Best Practice examples. Around 70 logistics players from Belarus attended the English-language coaching seminar, given under the title ‘Logistics companies: quality requirements for logistics services and logistics service providers in Belarus.’ Experts from established logistics companies and institutions featured as speakers. Wärtsilä, the marine industry's leading solutions and services provider, has been contracted to supply propulsion packages for 24 new vessels being built for the Singapore based China Navigation Co. Pte. Ltd (CNCo). The ships are being built at the Chengxi and Zhejiang Ouhua shipyards in China, and the contracts were signed with Wärtsilä licensee Hudong Heavy Machinery (HHM) in 2012 and during the first half of this year. At the end of this year Claudia Roller, Chief Executive Officer of Port of Hamburg Marketing Regd. Assn., will be retiring. From April 1, 2008, Claudia Roller served first as an executive board member of Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM) and then as CEO. Together with her executive board member colleague Axel Mattern she has successfully lead the marketing organization for the Port of Hamburg with great dedication. With its many varied activities at home and abroad HHM has helped to strengthen the Port of Hamburg’s competitive position. At 131 million tons in 2012,  total throughput in the Port of Hamburg remained slightly below the previous year. Hamburg nevertheless remains the second largest container port in Europe and consolidates its 14th place among container ports worldwide. For the Port of Hamburg, the reluctance to consume and invest apparent in Europe in the second half of 2012 especially affected throughput of imported goods. At 73.9 million tons, these were down by 3 percent. By contrast, exports by sea at 57.1 million tons (+ 1.9 percent) once again increased.
