Carnival Opens High-tech Training Center

Carnival Corporation & plc today announced the official opening of its Arison Maritime Center, a world-class facility dedicated to providing safety training for its bridge and engineering officers responsible for the navigation and operation of the company’s fleet of cruise ships. Located in Almere, Netherlands just outside Amsterdam, the new 75-million-euro facility features some of industry’s most advanced simulators and training equipment to provide annual training to more than 6,500 bridge and engineering officers from Carnival’s 10 global cruise line brands.

Peel Ports introduces Training Simulator on Site

In anticipation of the arrival of five of the world’s largest cranes at the Port of Liverpool in the autumn, Peel Ports has introduced a state-of-the-art ‘virtual’ training simulator on site, designed to ensure all operators are ready to manoeuvre the giant structures from Day One of installation. Peel Ports has been working closely with ABB, a global leader in automation, to produce a customised, high-tech training simulator tailored to interactively test the abilities and skills of drivers by presenting them with realistic, operating scenarios. The Company has invested over £500,000 in developing the simulator and the associated software.

VSTEP Simulators Power New Tug & OSV Training Center

During a ceremony on June 3, the new 360-Control Tug & OSV Training Center was officially opened for the general public and customers. Newpark Drilling Fluids Opens Technology Center

Newpark Drilling Fluids held a grand opening ceremony for its Newpark Technology Center in Katy, Texas. The celebration commenced with skydivers parachuting in while displaying American, Texas and Newpark flag replicas, followed by a flag raising ceremony conducted by the United States Army Color Guard and a ribbon cutting with Newpark executives as well. Festivities then continued indoors with tours of the center and its expansive laboratory facilities. Training Tugmasters – Without Vessels

Transas, Seaways Europe & Serco Marine: Working together to create the world’s best tug simulator, and along the way training Tugmasters in the absence of the actual vessels. When UK-based Serco Marine Services acquired 29 new vessels from Damen to replace older assets and augment their growing fleet and contract obligations, they also knew that that they simply could not wait until the boats arrived to begin training their tugmasters in the fine art of ASD operations. Serco Tugmaster and National Training Manager Steve Sandy eventually turned to SeaWays Consultants to get help with that training. Utilizing the cutting edge, Transas-built Seaways Tug Training Simulator, neither Serco nor Sandy has ever looked back with regret on that decision.

Technical University Varna Opens Simulation Center

The Technical University of Varna, Bulgaria officially opened its new state of the art simulation training center during a high profile opening ceremony at the university premises on October 3rd, 2012. Prepping For Duty:High Tech Training for State-of-the-Art ATB

Just one look at the tug Sea Reliance and its companion barge 550-1 shows that Marine Transport Corp., a Crowley Maritime Corporation company, spared no effort to make this ATB (articulated tug barge) and barge a state-of-the-art workboat. Its twin Caterpillar 12-cylinder diesel engines put out a combined total of 9,280 hp allowing for a sustained speed of 12-knots with a full load of 155,000 barrels of petroleum. The barge's cargo-handling systems, with inert gas blanketing and hydraulics, are the equal of most tankers. The technology is matched only by the accommodations and amenities, including single staterooms and private showers, which every crewmember greatly appreciates.

Shipyard's Apprenticeship Program Offers First Grads Since 1993

On Friday, August 17, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard graduated its first Cooperative Apprenticeship Program (CAP) class since 1993, when the program was halted by the threat of base closure and subsequent reductions in work force. The nine graduates began as a class of 12 in 1997 and have all accepted permanent, journeyman-level positions on the yard. Two years ago, each student received an associate's degree from a participating technical college. "A real bright spot in this program is the growth that we've seen in the past few years," said Captain Vernon "Tom" Williams, USN, the Shipyard's commander. "It has increased in size from 12 in the first class, to 49 in 1998, 95 in 1999, 75 in 2000, and 68 in 2001.
