Varun Shipping to Invest $300m

Varun Shipping reportedly will invest $300m to buy at least four new vessels in the offshore segment this year, according to a Reuters report. Varun is positioning itself to expand its presence in the offshore segment, the news organization said, quoting a leading Varun executive. Freight rates in the offshore segment has risen around 15 percent due to higher crude oil prices, which hit new life highs in 2008, crossing $120 a barrel on demand growth. (Source: Reuters)

Oil Majors Celebrate Higher 1Q Earnings

Not only did most oil producing companies post increased income and revenues in the first quarter 2000, compared to 1999, but in some cases, the increases were record-setting. In fact, Conoco's first quarter was the best quarter in the company's 125-year history. Here is a capsulated report of several companies' earnings. USX-Marathon Group's net income adjusted for special items was $199 million in first quarter 2000, compared with a net loss adjusted for special items of $11 million in first quarter 1999. The Marathon Group recorded first quarter 2000 net income of $254 million, which included a $55 million favorable aftertax gain on the sale of its 33.34 percent interest in the Angus/Stellaria development in the Gulf of Mexico. Net income in first quarter 1999 was $119 million.

Japanese To Combine Tanker Ops

Nippon Mitsubishi Oil Corp. and Cosmo Oil Co. Ltd., Japan's largest and third-largest oil refiners respectively, will integrate their tanker operations in November as a streamlining step under a year-old alliance. The companies said they expect to cut their combined freight costs by at least $4.62 million a year through the move. Japanese oil companies are under tremendous pressure from larger foreign-owned rivals like Exxon Mobil Corp. to cut costs and boost efficiency to restore profitability, which has been severely eroded by their inability to fully pass along higher crude oil costs by raising prices. Under the agreement, Cosmo Oil will pay $258,500 to acquire a 35 percent stake in Nippon Mitsubishi's wholly owned tanker unit Nippon Ryoyu Tanker Co.

Japan Shipbuilding Contracts Soar

Ship export contracts concluded by Japanese shipyards in December surged 148.2 percent from a year earlier to 1,657,340 grt or 29 vessels, the Japan Ship Exporters' Association said. Orders consisted of 15 oil tankers, 13 bulk carriers and one freighter, it said. The statistics cover orders received by association members for steel vessels of at least 500 grt. For the whole of calendar 2000, ship export contracts rose to 14,561,340 grt or 301 vessels, up 66.7 percent from the previous year, the association said. An official of the industry body attributed the sharp gains for December and for the year to an increase in oil demand, particularly from China, and firming freight rates in line with higher crude oil prices.

Earnings Down for Most Oil Companies

Many oil companies reported a decrease in net income for the second quarter, compared to the previous year's results, although - in most cases - the second quarter still outperformed the first. While the decreases ranged in percentage, only a few companies' results were virtually unchanged from the previous year's performance. However, higher crude oil prices resulted in many companies' exploration and production net income actually increasing over the previous year. "I am encouraged second-quarter operating earnings, although down from year-ago levels, were more than six times higher than in the first quarter, reflecting the impact of higher crude oil and natural gas prices…

Conoco Sees Better Earnings Than Expected

Conoco Inc., the sixth-largest U.S. oil company, painted a bright picture of its third-quarter results, saying higher crude oil and natural gas prices should help it beat analysts' current earnings estimates. Chief Executive Archie Dunham told analysts that earnings would be about four to seven cents higher than the consensus of 33 cents a share given by analysts surveyed by First Call/Thomson Financial. "We are very pleased by these results that reflect continued improvement in the business environment and - more importantly - our own operational success," Dunham said in a meeting with analysts in Houston. Coupled with continued growth in oil and gas production…

No Relief Yet

Oilfield service companies were not nearly as lucky as their oil producing counterparts. While net income in the oil producing industry was up over the 1998 third-quarter, oilfield service companies were still feeling the pain of the low oil prices from earlier in the year. While the stock market - the global business measuring stick - has generally been positive on the offshore oilfield sector throughout much of the year, there has been a relapse of sorts in October, as uncertainty surrounding OPEC output quotas has largely dampened the year's progress. In fact, a major tracker of offshore industry stocks, Warburg Dillon Read, in mid-October cut its ratings of four oilfield equipment and services companies.

Oil Price Rebound Means Big Gains for Oil Producers

The third quarter proved to be a prosperous one for oil companies, as most of our sampling realized substantial gains in net income and net operating income for the period, as compared to 1998's third quarter. A higher average worldwide crude oil price was chiefly responsible for the increases, although in some cases, cost-cutting measures also contributed heavily to the financial results. Exploration and production net operating income was up, nearly across the board. However, for the first nine months of 1999, earnings and net income are still down from the same period in 1998. Phillips Petroleum Company reported third-quarter net income of $221 million up from $46 million for the same period last year. Total revenues were $3.8 billion, versus $2.9 billion a year ago.

Conoco Expects Higher Earnings in Third Quarter

Conoco said higher crude oil and natural gas prices, as well as continued growth in oil and natural gas production volumes, will result in earnings appreciably higher than current analysts' estimates for the third quarter. Conoco Chairman, President and CEO Archie W. Dunham said earnings would be in a range of about four to seven cents higher than First Call's current consensus estimate of 33 cents of underlying earnings per share for the third quarter. "We're on target to produce production growth of about 10 percent in 1999, in line with earlier estimates," he said. Conoco Executive Vice-President for worldwide upstream Rob McKee said the added production was primarily due to increased volumes from the giant U.K.

Quarter and Year-End Earnings

Once again, quarter and year-end earnings reported in the offshore market reflected a familiar trend: oil majors saw gains - sometimes significant; while oilfield service companies continued to struggle, compared to the year-earlier marks. Unocal Corporation reported fourth quarter 1999 preliminary unaudited net earnings of $97 million and adjusted net earnings (excluding special items) of $77 million. The fourth quarter results compare with a reported loss of $29 million for the same period a year ago. Adjusted net earnings for the fourth quarter 1998 were $28 million. The fourth quarter earnings reflect higher oil and gas prices, offset partially by lower net oil and gas sales volumes and a higher international tax rate.
