AiP for Aurelia's Bulk Carrier "Green Retrofit" Solution

RINA awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) for a green retrofit package solution designed by Aurelia, in partnership with Econowind, Wattlab and Vertom, aimed to meet CO2 reduction targets in compliance with CII. The retrofit package can be applied to almost any kind of vessel and incorporates rigid sails, solar panels, batteries, optimized weather-routing, and a smart decision support system developed by Hydrographic and Marine Consultants (HMC) to dramatically reduce emissions of an existing Newcastlemax bulk carrier.

Retrofit Package Designed to Include Solar, Wind and Storage

RINA has awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) for a green retrofit package designed by naval architect Aurelia in partnership with Econowind, Wattlab and Vertom.The solution incorporates rigid sails, solar panels, batteries, optimised weather-routing, and a smart decision support system developed by Hydrographic and Marine Consultants (HMC) to dramatically reduce emissions on an existing 203,000dwt Newcastlemax bulk carrier.For the Newcastlemax bulk carrier, the challenge was to meet EEXI and the CII index for the reduction of CO2 emissions.

Kongsberg Digital Bags 5-year Extension with Heerema Marine Contractors

Safeway Wins W2W Deal with Heerema to Support Huge Taiwan Offshore Wind Farm

Heerema Marine Contractors' giant heavy-lift vessel Sleipnir has broken a record for the largest single lift jacket removal. HMC said Monday that the record was broken in the Norwegian North Sea, where Sleipnir removed the 8100-tonne Jotun-B jacket for client Vår Energi. Heerema Fabrication Group Sells UK and Netherlands Yards

Dutch offshore construction and engineering company Heerema Fabrication Group (HFG) intends to divest a significant part of its activities in the field of design and fabrication of complex steel constructions for the offshore market.HFG has been struggling for some time with insufficient project volume and marginal profitability. In addition, the risks associated with building topsides are high and clients are not prepared to pay for this risk.As a result of the divestment HFG intends to dispose of its activities at the locations in Zwijndrecht (The Netherlands) and Hartlepool (United Kingdom). Semi-submersible Crane Vessel Hermod Retired

Heerema Marine Contractors said its semi-submersible crane vessel Hermod will retire at the end of this year after nearly 40 years of operational performance. Designed and constructed in the 1970s, Hermod and sister vessel Balder were the first semi-submersible crane vessels of their kind in the offshore construction industry. The semi-submersible concept was developed with the aim to extend the operability in the harsh North Sea environment and furthermore to deliver superior lifting capacity.

Containerized Control Room Delivered for SSCV Thialf

ELA Container Offshore GmbH delivered an offshore office container to Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC), a marine contractor in the international offshore oil and gas industry. The container was placed on board semisubmersible crane vessel (SSCV) Thialf and was used as a control room to operate their anchor winches. The Thialf is HMC's largest SSCV, capable of a tandem lift of 15,600 tons. Its two cranes provide for a depth reach lowering capability as well as a heavy lift capacity to install topsides.

Debt Looms for South Korean Shipyards

The top four Korean shipbuilders have 2.3 trillion won ($1.9 billion) in notes maturing next year, the most in Bloomberg-compiled data going back to 1997. Bloomberg reports that some of them may have trouble paying debts without help from the government or group firms, according to HMC Investment Securities Co. and NH Investment & Securities Co. Hanjin Shipping Co. sought bankruptcy protection this year and earnings suffered at Korea’s top shipyards including Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co., amid a slump in oil prices and growing competition from China. On October 31 this year, Korea’s Ministry of Strategy and Finance (MOSF) announced a plan to buttress the shipping and shipbuilding industries.

UK Convicts Captain, First Mate of Drug Trafficking

The captain and first officer of an ocean going tug boat have been found guilty of drug trafficking following the biggest ever U.K. seizure of class A drugs, the country’s National Crime Agency (NCA) announced. The cocaine, worth an estimated potential street value of £512 million once adulterated, was found hidden aboard the Tanzanian flagged MV Hamal in April 2015. The vessel had been intercepted by the Royal Navy destroyer HMS Somerset and Border Force cutter HMC Valiant in the North Sea approximately 100 miles off the coast of Aberdeenshire.

Eastern Launches Second MPSV for Hornbeck

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. has launched the second of two 302’x76’x26’ multipurpose service vessels in the HOSMPSV 310ES series for Hornbeck Offshore Services, LLC., the shipbuilder announced. The new vessel, HOS Woodland (Hull 242), was launched at Eastern’s Allanton facility on Friday, June 19 at an event with hundreds of Eastern employees and guests in attendance. HOS Woodland is the second ship to be christened on Eastern’s newly constructed 425’ rocker beam system installed on the northeast corner of Allanton’s 760’ launch basin.

SeaZip Offshore Service Commences Operation

Harlingen-based SeaZip Offshore Service has entered into a partnership agreement with Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC). HMC, the world's market leader in transporting, installing and dismantling offshore oil and gas installations, has contracted service vessel SeaZip 4 for its annual project activities in the North Sea for the coming summer months. SeaZip Offshore Service is thus getting off to a successful start in the international oil and gas industry. Delivered early this year, SeaZip 4 is the fourth Damen Fast Crew Supplier 2610 in the SeaZip Offshore Service fleet. She is one of the first ‘Twin Axe Bow’ service vessels to be deployed in the offshore oil and gas industry. All other vessels of this type provide services for the offshore wind industry.
