BIMCO Awards Leadership, Innovation, Pioneering Business Strategy

BIMCO today presented three awards to recognise and celebrate excellence in the global shipping industry among both companies and individuals in the industry – following BIMCO’s conference in Shanghai. This year the importance of leadership, innovation and pioneering business strategy in shipping were clearly recognised by the judges in the choice of winners. BIMCO President Philippe Louis-Dreyfus chose to give the BIMCO President’s Award to the Tung family from Hong Kong, who run OOCL among other companies. The award celebrates an individual, family or company who has made a significant contribution to shipping and the maritime industry. The award was received by CC Tung, on behalf of the family.

Calecore Bags Norwegian Contracts

Calecore has been contracted by ABB to supply a pre-lay survey of the Martin Linge PFS (Power from Shore) cable route to be conducted from the DP2 class vessel Seabed Worker with survey sensors mobilized to a 150HP Schilling HD WROV. The Martin Linge Field is located on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and the vessel will be mobilizing from Bergen, Norway in March 2015. The pre-lay survey consists of an ROV visual and magnetic survey along the 163 km center line. The PFS cable, which, when installed shall be the world’s longest HV AC submarine cable.

HFW Lawyers Advise Genting HK on Cruise Ship Order

International maritime law partnership Holman Fenwick Willan (HFW) says it has advised Chinese Percept Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Genting Hong Kong Limited (Genting), on the group's second newbuild mega-cruise ship order in 12 months, in a deal with German shipbuilder Meyer Werft GmbH worth €697.2 million. The HFW team, led by Hong Kong Partner Patrick Yeung, advised Genting on the shipbuilding contract and related ECA-supported financing. London based Partner Elinor Dautlich and Senior Associate Alex Sayegh negotiated the shipbuilding contract, while Partner John Forrester and Associate Gudmund Bernitz (also London based) advised on the ECA-backed financing.

Dry Land Big Row Benefits Lake Malawi Health Project

Three heroic teams of oarsmen from Thomas Miller P&I in London as well as sister team at Thomas Miller Asia-Pacific have all successfully completed their legs of the Big Row charity event. In total some eighty teams from the international maritime community took part in a 'virtual' row of the length of Lake Malawi to raise funds for the ongoing refurbishment of the 'MV Chauncy Maples' as a medical clinic ship. The main event took place in Spitalfields Market in the City of London on the evening of the 11th September.

Two New Directors Appointed at FSL Trust

Maltese Freighter Captain Pleads Guilty in U.S. Federal Court

The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Oregon, announced that the Vessel Master of the Adfines East plead guilty to operating a commercial vessel under the influence of alcohol in the Port of Portland. Valeriy Sharykin, 62, a Russian citizen, and captain of a Maltese freighter plead guilty before U.S. Magistrate John V. Acosta. Defendant Sharykin was charged by information with negligent operation of a commercial vessel, a class A misdemeanor. Sharykin was the licensed Vessel Master on the Adfines East, a 602 foot commercial vessel, weighing over 24,000 gross tons and sailing under the flag of Malta. Paul Dean has taken over from current head George Eddings who becomes the firm's new Managing Partner effective from 1 April 2013. Middle East Maritime Professionals Flock to North's P&I Course

A wide variety of shipowners, operators and other senior maritime professionals from throughout the Middle East region have attended North P&I club’s residential course in P&I insurance and loss prevention held in Dubai this week. A total of 46 delegates from 21 organisations signed up for the ‘A’ rated, 170 million GT club’s four-day course at the Dubai Marine Beach and Resort Spa, which concluded yesterday (13 September 2012). They included representatives of many of North’s Middle East members - including Adnatco, Bakri Navigation, E Ships, Mideast Ship Management, MUR Shipping, Oman Shipping, Stellar Ocean Transport, United Arab Chemical Carriers and United Arab Shipping Company.

IMCA’s Marine Construction Contract Revised

The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has published a variety of guides, templates and discussion documents aimed at raising awareness on contracting issues (including liability and insurance), promoting discussion and providing tools that may be useful for its contractor members, their clients and sub-contractors. All are subject to revision to ensure usefulness to all stakeholders and that it just what has happened to a key document – ‘IMCA Marine Construction Contract’, with revision to others relating to offshore survey and ROV work in the pipeline.

Shipping Industry Facing “Deepwater Horizon moment”

The shipping industry has been warned by a leading maritime lawyer that it may soon face its “Deepwater Horizon moment” in the event of a mega containership casualty. Recent high profile container ship casualties have involved relatively small vessels capable of carrying up to 4688 containers (MSC Napoli). The Rena, which is currently breaking up off the coast of New Zealand, has a capacity of 3352 containers. By comparison, the largest vessels sailing today are carrying over 15000 boxes.

Companies, organisations and individuals that have championed high standards and quality in shipping issues have been honoured in the annual Seatrade Middle East and Indian Subcontinent Awards. The awards, recognising maritime safety and the environment, ship and port operations and efficiency, security and financing, were presented at a gala dinner attended by around 600 senior executives of the region’s maritime and related industries at Al Johara Ballroom, Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai, on Thursday.

MSC Sealift Logistics Europe, New Commander

The leadership of Sealift Logistics Command Europe and Commander, Task Force 63 changed hands at SEALOGEUR headquarters in Naples, Italy. Capt. James E. Tranoris assumed the dual command from outgoing commander, Capt. Nicholas H. Holman. SEALOGEUR, Military Sealift Command's arm in Europe and Africa, oversees at-sea movement of combat cargo for U.S. 6th Fleet. CTF-63 is responsible for the ships and aircraft that provide logistics support to 6th Fleet combatant ships. The commander's area of responsibility includes more than 20 million square nautical miles of ocean, 91 countries and 67 percent of the world's coastlines. It covers roughly half of the Atlantic Ocean, from the North Pole to Antarctica, as well as the Adriatic, Baltic, Barents, Black, Caspian, Mediterranean and North seas.

Hornblower Tests Eco-Friendly Paints

By participating in an EPA-funded study of copper-free paints, Hornblower Cruises & Events is pioneering efforts to protect marine life and minimize boating impact in San Diego Bay. Researchers will spend the next two years comparing the effectiveness of ten test paints recently applied to the hull of the San Diego-based M/V Newport Hornblower. "We're doing some experimental painting," said Jim Unger, vice president of Hornblower Cruises and Events. "Traditionally, bottom paint has had toxins – either heavy metals or other biocides – that get into the water system. The Port of San Diego has partnered with Hornblower on the study, which responds to a 1996 San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board report identifying high levels of dissolved copper in Shelter Island Yacht Basin waters.

Survey Ship in Estonia to Find WWII-era Plane

Kaleva, which was carrying nine passengers – including U.S. diplomatic courier Henry W. Antheil, Jr. – mysteriously exploded 10 minutes after taking off from Tallinn’s airport on the first day of the Soviet-blockade of Estonia during World War II. News of the blockade and of Kaleva’s crash was overshadowed by the Nazi occupation of Paris, which also occurred on June 14. To this day the wreckage of Kaleva and the remains of its nine passengers have never been found. Estonia’s Minister of Defense Jaak Aaviksoo requested the assistance of a U.S. Navy survey ship in searching for the downed airplane in a January 2008 letter to U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. “We are excited to collaborate with the Estonian military and to search for Kaleva,” said Capt. Comsat Granted Access to Domestic U.S. Market

Ruling Provides More Satellite Communications Options to Agencies, Relief Organizations and Businesses Operating in the U.S. Comsat Mobile Communications (CMC), a business unit of Lockheed Martin Global Telecommunications, announced that it has received authority from the FederalCommunications Commission (FCC) to provide domestic land mobile, maritime, and aeronautical mobile satellite communications services throughout the United States and its territories via the Inmarsat satellite system. This authority is granted in anticipation of the conduct of an IPO by Inmarsat as required by the 2000 Federal ORBIT Act. All of CMC's voice, data, and high-speed data services -- including Direct Internet access, e-mail, and fax -- are included in this ruling.

War Risks

Shipowners, charterers, traders, energy companies and insurers will be among those interested to learn the impact of recent events on the war and force major exceptions in their contracts and to identify relevant insurance policies. There are currently many numbers of spats going on between shipping interests and their insurers over the need to increase war rates to destinations - and there are a lot of them - which underwriters might consider to be vulnerable. And the European Shippers Council has asked the EC to investigate war risk premiums levied by marine underwriters. Watson Farley & Williams is reportedly holding a seminar in London October 9 to discuss these issues.

MSC Cargo Ship Loads Equipment Bound for Middle East

Military Sealift Command large, medium-speed, roll-on/roll-off ship USNS Gilliland loaded more than 150,000 square feet of U.S. Army equipment in Antwerp, Belgium, March 15-18. The equipment – trucks, trailers, tanks and other combat support equipment – belongs to the U.S. Army’s 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division. Gilliland is delivering the cargo to the to be used in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Since , MSC ships have delivered more than 101 million square feet of equipment in support of operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. “Serving the men and women deployed to and by getting their equipment to them on time is one of our key missions here at Sealift Logistics Command Europe,” said Capt. Nicholas Holman, SEALOGEUR commander.
