This Day in Coast Guard History – Feb. 23
1822- Congress authorized the Revenue Cutter Service to protect the natural environment by preventing "scoundrels" from cutting live oak, needed for cutters and Navy vessels, on Florida public lands. 1837-Congress called for an inspection of the coast from Chesapeake Bay to the Sabine River "with regard to the location of additional light-houses, beacons, and buoys." Captain Napoleon L. Coste, commanding the Revenue cutter Campbell, was dispatched. He reported that the first addition to aids to navigation on this entire coast should be at Egmont Key, Tampa Bay. A lighthouse was authorized immediately and built the next year. 1877-First Lieutenant Dorr F.
Coast Guard Working to Reopen Ports
The Coast Guard, as part of a Joint Hurricane Team (JHT), is working to reopen the and Pascagoula Ship Channels to deep-draft traffic. Currently, the of is open to vessel traffic with a draft of 35 feet or less, but the is closed. The is open to all traffic with a draft of 12 feet or less, but Horn Island Channel remains closed. A recovery plan has been produced with the goal of reopening the channels within the next 24 hours, possibly late Wednesday afternoon. The JHT is made up of representatives from the maritime industry, and Pascagoula Port Authorities, and state and federal officials, including the Coast Guard, Army Corp of Engineers, and NOAA.
Gulf LNG Clean Energy Marine Terminal Project – Meeting
The U.S. Coast Guard is preparing a letter of recommendation as to the suitability of the Pascagoula Bar, Horn Island Pass, Lower Pascagoula Bay, and Bayou Casotte Channels for liquefied natural gas (LNG) marine traffic. The letter of recommendation is in response to a letter of intent submitted by Gulf LNG Clean Energy Marine Terminal Project to operate a LNG facility in Jackson County, Mississippi. A public meeting will be held in Pascagoula on December 7 to receive input. Written comments should be submitted by December 14. Source: HK Law
