Iran Stores More Oil on Tankers

Iran, which has the world’s fourth-largest oil reserves, could quickly export millions of barrels of crude and help drive down red-hot oil prices if it reaches a deal in ongoing talks with the United States on its nuclear program.The U.S. government lifted some sanctions on the Iranian nuclear program as a goodwill gesture on Friday to speed up the talks. Bouchard Transportation Co. acquires its first oil barge, a sunken 15,000 barrel vessel, which Capt. Fred Bouchard purchased for $100. After raising this vessel, he towed it from Jacksonville, FL, to a Norfolk, VA, shipyard, where it was then converted to a hot oil system oil barge and named the John Frederick. #BTC100  The July 2018 edition of Maritime Reporter & Engineering News will feature a special “Bouchard Transportation Co. PPG Unveils Subsea Coating System

The PPG protective and marine coatings business is introducing and highlight the new PHENGUARD Subsea coating system. The new product combination of PHENGUARD Subsea 610 coating and PHENGUARD Subsea 780 coating is an ideal two-coat subsea system with high-temperature resistance up to 180 C (356 F) for surfaces with or without insulation. “The subsea market is one of the most innovative sectors within the offshore industry, with state-of-the art technologies used for subsea projects worldwide," said Marcel de Haan, PPG global product specialist for subsea coatings. At elevated temperatures, he said, there is a possibility of having a temperature gradient over the coating, which can make coating systems behave differently than in standard conditions.

Harvey Gulf Acquires Shipbuilding Assets

Harvey Gulf International Marine (HGIM) is launching a new affiliate, Harvey Shipyard Group, to manage its shipbuilding assets, the company announced today. Harvey Shipyard Group is acquiring Gulf Coast Shipyard (Gulfport, Miss.) and Trinity Yachts (New Orleans, La.). HGIM Chairman and CEO Shane J. HGIM said it intends to work with its affiliates to catapult the Gulf Coast Shipyard, which constructed the nation’s first LNG OSVs for the offshore market, in addition to tank and hot oil barges. HGIM alone is investing $350 million to construct its dual-fuel fleet.

During this time, the company has expanded both its product line and staff, as well as its reach throughout much of the Gulf Coast area. Growth has brought changes to Laborde's staff. Stepping down as president, Tracey Laborde remains company CEO. Brian Laborde now fills the role of president, with Doug Oehrlein as VP of sales and marketing. More diesel technicians and a new service manager augment the company's dedicated service department.

Maritime Firefighting: Not Another Drill

OK, your ship has just pulled into port and will start unloading soon. The first mate has told everyone that while shore side paperwork is being completed there will be a mandated fire drill to fulfill international requirements. A designated fire team hooks up several lengths of fire hose to a fire hose station on the main deck. You are the junior crew member so you are told to drag the nozzle with hose attached to the bow of your ship. When you arrive there water is started and you are told to aim the water stream over the side for 30-minutes.

SCI – Houston Adds Instructors to Training Staff

The Seamen’s Church Institute announces that Captain Henry E. Cummings and Captain Stephen Polk have joined the teaching staff at the Institute’s simulator training center located in the Port of Houston. Since May of 2001, the SCI – Houston Center staff has provided advanced training for deep-sea, inland, and coastal mariners. Captain Henry E. Prior to joining SCI in January of 2008, Captain Henry Cummings was Senior Port Captain and an Operations Officer at XL Marine in Paducah, KY. For two years, he was responsible for managing Navigation and Crewing concerns, supervising chemical tows on the Ohio River, and investigating all vessel incidents and reporting findings to management.

Manitowoc Gets Hot Oil Tug Barge Contract

The Manitwoc Company, Inc. and its subsidiary, Bay Shipbuilding Co., part of Manitowoc’s Marine Group, has been granted a contract from Penn Maritime, Inc. to build an ocean-class tug and a 140,000-barrel, double-hull hot oil barge. The contract also permits Penn to purchase a second tug/barge combination within 120 days. With the barge to measure 480 x 78 x 36.5 ft. (146.3 x 23.7 x 11.1 m) and equipped with a system of heating coils to maintain cargo temperatures at or above 135 degrees F, the 6,000-hp tug will boast measurements of 123 x 38 ft. An Intercon coupler will link both vessels into a 564-ft. overall length unit that will be ABS, U.S. Coast Guard and OPA-90 compliant. The unit is scheduled for delivery by December 2004.

Manitowoc to Build Oil Barges for Moran

The Manitowoc Company, Inc. through its subsidiary, Bay Shipbuilding Co., part of Manitowoc's Marine Group, has been awarded a contract from Moran Towing Corporation to build two ocean-class, double-hull, hot oil tank barges. The first barge is scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2004, and the second in the second quarter of 2005. Other contract terms were not disclosed. Each of the 110,000-barrel capacity barges will measure 425 feet in length by 78 feet in width and will be configured with 10 cargo compartments serviced by three diesel-driven, deep-well cargo pumps. The barges will also feature a stern notch and an Intercon coupling system, which will link the units to customer-supplied tugs.

Construction Continues on New Bouchard ATB

Bollinger Gulf Repair L.L.C., a Bollinger Shipyards, Inc., shipyard, has completed the retrofit of a Bouchard Coastwise Management Co., tug and barge to an articulated (ATB) unit utilizing the Intercon Coupler System. The 446-foot, 125,000 BBL (barrel) black oil Barge B. No.175 which was renamed Barge B. No.275, was transformed from a single hull to double hull vessel to meet the requirements of OPA ‘90. Her stern was modified with the matching Intercon ladder to accept the bow of the 127-foot tug CAPT. FRED BOUCHARD, which was retrofitted with ram assemblies of the Intercon system.

ATB New Construction and Retrofits Highlight Order Books for Southern Shipyards

Late last year was a high water mark of sorts in the Articulated Tug-Barge (ATB) business. In December, Crowley Maritime of Seattle, Wash. took delivery of their fourth ATB, featuring a 9,280 HP tug and a 155,000 barrel barge. Bay Shipbuilding, Sturgeon Bay, Wisc. built the barge. and the tug by sister company Marinette Marine, Manitowoc, Mich. At about the same time on the east coast K-Sea Transportation was taking delivery of their fourth ATB unit from Bollinger Shipyards, Lockport, La. All four of these new units featured new 80,000-100,000 barrel barges and existing tugs fitted with the JAK coupler system. In 2004, ATB construction has slowed a bit, but several companies continue contracting for retrofitted and new ATB units.

Bollinger to Design, Build Five DH Hot Oil Barges

Bollinger Shipyards, Inc., Lockport, La., signed a contract to design and build five 297.5 ft., 30,000 barrel (BBL), double hull, hot asphalt tank barges for Horizon Maritime LLC, Houston. They are being built at Bollinger’s Marine Fabricators (BMF), Amelia, La., with deliveries planned for the first and second quarter 2005. Lynn Falgout VP of BMF said, “These new barges will be similar to, but not identical to other hot oil barges we built for another customer. Overall, each of the four raked and one boxed barges will be 297.5 feet long with a 54-foot beam and 13 foot depth at the sides

ONGC Awards Offshore Order to L&T

Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has awarded a project order with Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T) for the NQ re-construction (NQRC) Project in Mumbai High North fields, according to Domain-b. According to the report, this project is the largest brownfield project of its kind awarded in the offshore oil and gas sector in India. The NQ Complex, one of the oldest assets owned by ONGC, has been operational since 1985. The project comprises reconstruction of offshore facilities at the NQ Complex including the replacement of the existing booster compressor with a new process gas compressor module, revamp of produced water conditioning system, hot oil system, gas dehydration unit and other utilities.

Manitowoc Awarded Contract by Moran Towing

The Manitowoc Company, Inc. announced that Moran Towing Corporation has awarded Manitowoc Marine Group a follow-on contract for construction of two ocean- class, double-hull, hot oil tank barges. The vessels, which will be built by its Bay Shipbuilding Co. (BSC) subsidiary, are identical to a pair of tank barges that BSC constructed and delivered to Moran in 2004 and 2005. Measuring 425 feet in length by 78 feet in width, Moran's newest tank barges will be configured with ten cargo compartments that provide a 100% cubic capacity of 118,836 barrels of petroleum products. The barges will also feature an onboard heating system to maintain consistent cargo temperatures of 135 degrees F. A stern notch and Intercon coupling system will link each barge to a customer-supplied tug.

Manitowoc Awarded Contract for Double-Hull Tug/Barge Unit

The Manitowoc Company, Inc. announced that Vane Line Bunkering, Inc. has awarded Manitowoc Marine Group (MMG) a contract for the construction of a 480-ft., 145,000-barrel, double-hulled hot oil tank barge and an accompanying 6,000-horsepower tug. The ocean-going articulated tug and barge (AT/B) unit is slated for delivery in fourth quarter of 2006. This contract also provides Vane Brothers with an option for an identical AT/B unit to be delivered in the third quarter of 2007. Other contract terms were not disclosed. The Vane contract represents the eleventh double-hulled barge and fourth ocean-going tug to be built by Manitowoc Marine Group. Both tug and barge, which will serve the mid-Atlantic petroleum markets, will be classified in compliance with ABS, Coast Guard, and OPA-90 standards.

The Manitowoc Company, Inc. won a new construction contract from Harley Marine Services, Inc. to build an ocean-class, double-hull, hot oil tank barge. The 80,000-barrel capacity barge, which is scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2006, will measure 369 ft. (112 m) in length, 78 ft. (24 m) in width, and 33 ft. (10 m) in molded depth. The contract includes an option for a second identical vessel. The Harley barge is the tenth double-hull tank barge built by the Manitowoc Marine Group. The vessel features a flush deck design and is equipped with an onboard heating system to maintain consistent cargo temperatures of 160 degrees. It will also be ABS, U.S. Coast Guard, and OPA-90 compliant.

The Harley contract also includes an option for a second identical vessel. Other contract terms were not disclosed. Bouchard ATB Conversion Underway at Bollinger

Engineering and design work is underway at Bollinger Gulf Repair, New Orleans, for Bouchard Transportation Co., Inc. third retrofit project tug and barge to an ATB unit utilizing the Intercon Coupler System. The 446-ft. 125,000 BBL black oil Barge B No. 175 will be transformed from a singe hull to a double hull vessel to meet the requirements of OPA 90, and the stern will be notched to accept the bow of the 127-ft. tug Capt. Fred Bouchard, which will be retrofitted with the ram assemblies of the Intercon system. New heating coils will be added to the barge’s existing Hot-Oil system and a new ballast system will be installed. A keel cooled Detroit Diesel 8V-71 generator set producing 99 kW will be installed in the tug as back up for powering the Intercon system main generator.

Barge Business Booming at Bollinger

Well-known in the shipbuilding industry as a quality builder of various vessels and as a specialist in ship and barge repair, conversions and barge flaring, Lockport, La.-based Bollinger Shipyards has made a name for itself as a major builder of barges used on inland waterways and ocean-going uses. Stemming from the shipyard's growth are five contracts for 17 specialized large barges ranging in sizes from 240 to 365 ft. Some were recently delivered, while others will be sent off before year-end 2000. According to Lynn Falgout, vice-president and general manager of Bollinger Marine Fabricators, "Until April 1997, we had had a limited barge program in eight shipyards.
