IMO 2020: Hydrogen's Future in Maritime

Hydrogen fuel cell technology to Satisfy Future IMO RequirementsWith an ongoing push by the maritime community to reduce ship emissions to satisfy IMO MARPOL Annex VI regulations and limit the sulfur content of ships from 01 January 2020 to 0.5 percent world-wide, many ship owners are starting to consider hydrogen fuel cell technology to satisfy evolving emissions regulations. To date, hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on research programs to utilize hydrogen fuel cells for transportation. Several maritime powers including the European Union, the United States and Japan have initiated pilot programs to assess the feasibility of maritime hydrogen to reduce emissions while maintaining cost parity with traditional propulsion technology.

Engineer wisdom: Nothing is worse as the right idea at the wrong time. But with the new ECOCHARGE Two-Stage Turbocharging System MAN D&T has reached both goals. Aside from the ever-popular “Fuel Consumption Reduction,” a leading player in the development of large combustion engines since the second halve of the 1980s has been reducing harmful exhaust emissions. In view of increased environmental awareness and the future price movements for fossil fuels, these two factors will remain a dominant force in future engine developments for the immediate future.

IRClass Backs India’s Efforts to Cut Emissions

The Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass), a ship classification society, has issued a ringing endorsement of the COP21 agreement at the United Nations Climate Conference in Paris. Arun Sharma, CMD, IRClass represented the voice of the Indian Shipping fraternity at the recently concluded COP21 Climate Summit in Paris. Speaking at the India Pavilion on the topic, ‘GHG Emissions from Indian Shipping – Impact and Mitigating Measures’, he defended shipping as the most energy efficient mode of transport. Noting that despite shipping carrying 90 percent of world trade, shipping contributes only 2.2 percent of total Green House Gas emissions, Sharma endorsed the ongoing efforts by IMO to keep global warming below 2 degrees centigrade.

EU Needs IMO Leadership to Reduce Shipping Emissions

The European Community Shipowners’ Association (ECSA) has reiterated their support for International Maritime Organisation (IMO) as the proper leader of efforts to reduce shipping’ s greenhouse gas emissions at the start of the COP 21 Climate Change Conference in Paris. “We fully support the idea that shipping has to contribute to global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions” commented Patrick Verhoeven, ECSA Secretary General, adding: “EU Member States gave a vote of confidence to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in its ability to address as soon as possible and in an effective manner greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping. We believe this is the right approach as it would be the logical continuation of steps already taken at EU level.

MACSEA Measures Hull Paint Performance

Hull fouling causes drag-related speed loss and increased fuel consumption when more power is delivered in order to maintain ship schedules. Hull fouling is also a topic of growing environmental concern and international regulation as it relates to green house gas emissions and the carriage of aquatic invasive species on fouled hulls. To combat these issues, shipping companies are relying on modern hull coating systems like foul-release paint to provide a ready solution. Foul-release and most other types of marine hull paint are expensive and shipping companies have had few easy choices for accurately measuring paint performance and cost effectiveness before making fleet purchasing decisions.
