thyssenkrupp to Overhaul Indian Navy Submarine

German manufacturer thyssenkrupp has been awarded a 410 Crore contract with Mazagon Docks Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) to refit the Indian Navy’s Shishumar-class non-nuclear submarine, INS Shishumar. The Medium Refit and Life Certification (MRLC) contract for the submarine will commence in October this year and is expected to be completed by 2021. Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems Awarded Service Order in Peru

Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, a leading global system supplier for submarines and surface vessels, has received a service order worth around €40 million from the Peruvian naval shipyard SIMA. A key component of the order is the provision of consulting during the planning and realization of extensive modernization work on four HDW 209/1200 class submarines over a period of seven years. Among other things thyssenkrupp Marine Systems will perform engineering and technical services such as cutting and welding on the submarines and will make specialists available to provide local support. Germany Lobbies for India's Submarine Project

Germany is hopeful in bagging multi-billion-dollar Indian submarine project for building six conventional submarines, says a PTI report. German Ambassador to India Michael Steiner said the P-75(I) project was under discussion and that the matter also came up during German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen's visit here last month. He said that the talk did not specify the modalities of the deal on whether this should be Business-to-Business or Government-to -Government. According to Michael his minister said that it was a clear sign that there is potential for cooperation in this field (defence) and also in the field of submarines. German defence major TKMS is offering India its HDW Class 214 vessel and is in talks with leading shipyards in the country for a tie-up.

Germany Looking to Dock Submarine Deal with India

The German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen is visiting India lobbying for the purchase of German Stealth Submarines and European military hardware, say local media. Sources said that Ursula  talked of Eurofighter and [HDW] submarines in her discussions with Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. India reportedly asked Germany what all it could offer if a direct deal was struck between the two countries on next-generation submarines. The move comes after India recently announced to buy 36 Rafale fighter jets from France. Powerful Submarines Join Israel’s Navy

The Israel Navy’s fourth submarine, the ISS Tanin (Crocodile), is expected to become fully operational in a few weeks and participate in naval operations. The nuclear-capable submarine boasts an array of sophisticated weaponry, as well as the latest in intelligence-gathering technology. It stands at a whopping 68 meters long, compared to 57.3 meters on average for other submarines. The navy’s fifth submarine, meanwhile, is expected to arrive this summer, and is now in the final stages of construction at the Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) shipyards in Kiel, Germany. TKMS Blohm + Voss Nordseewerke Last Newbuild

On December 11, the last newbuilding of a series of 3,400 TEU container ships entered the waters at the Emden-based TKMS Blohm + Voss Nordseewerke – a company of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. This technical launch took place nine months after the laying down of the first double-bottom section. Once fully afloat, the vessel was immediately hauled over to the outfitting pier, where it will remain moored until its scheduled handover at the end of the first quarter of 2010. Italian Navy, More Subs with Siemens Fuel Cells

For the Italian navy, the Siemens Industry Solutions Division is equipping two new submarines of the U212A type with fuel cell modules for air-independent propulsion. The systems are ordered by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW). Delivery of the two submarines to the Italian navy is planned for 2015 and 2016. This will increase to 30 the number of submarines plying the seas worldwide with a Siemens fuel cell technology. The order has a volume of around $42.6m. The submarines are being built at the Italian Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani S.p.A shipyard.

MS&D 2009 Hamburg

The latest surveillance, defence and security equipment is presented by the 60 exhibitors at MS&D 2009, the international conference and exhibition on Maritime Security & Defence (MS&D), to be held at the Hamburg Fair site from 30 September to 2 October 2009. The exhibits include sophisticated optical and acoustic sensors, which have substantially improved the automated monitoring and control technology of security and defence equipment and systems. Thus the exhibiting companies, most of them from the exclusive circle of defence system manufacturers, are contributing to the protection of international shipping. Atlas Elektronik Equips Korean Submarines

Atlas Elektronik has been awarded the largest single order in its company history. Bremen’s specialist for naval electronics will equip six submarines for Korea with combat systems of the type ISUS 90-61. The corresponding contract was signed with Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW), which belongs to ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG. HDW will deliver six material packages to Korea for the construction of Class 214 submarines. The six ISUS systems from Atlas Elektronik form an important part of this order. In addition, the contract provides for extensive teamwork with the Korean industry. Atlas Elektronik is therefore also represented in the second batch of the Korean submarine programme. Six New Subs for Turkey

On July 2, 2009, a contract was signed in Ankara by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW), a company of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG (TKMS), and MarineForce International LLP (MFI) for the construction of six submarines within the Turkish “New Type Submarine” program. The contract comprises the delivery of six material packages for the construction of submarines based on Class 214. The contract was concluded between the HDW/MFI Consortium and the Turkish defense procurement authority.

Thyssen Krupp Expands AVEVA Use

AVEVA, the supplier of engineering IT systems for the plant and marine industries announced that Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems has extended its 25-year association with AVEVA by signing a new agreement that includes migration from the former Tribon system to the AVEVA Marine shipbuilding solution with all of its extended functional possibilities at the company shipyards in Kiel, Emden and Hamburg, Germany. HDW purchases Topgallant

As part of the implementation of SAP R/3 at the Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft in Kiel, Germany, Atlantec Enterprise Solutions has been chosen to develop the link from the Tribon Hull shipbuilding software to R/3. The link is to be developed in close cooperation with HDW’s own software house, NIS Norddeutsche Informations-Systeme GmbH. Using information extracted from Tribon, the Topgallant software supplied by Atlantec Enterprise Solutions will prepare data for the ERP system. The Topgallant solution to be provided will support both the initial transfer of data shortly before the burning start of each block, as well as any subsequent changes to that block during production.

The alliance will create a systems house with strong positions in the naval shipbuilding sector. "Under the new structure all existing locations will be retained," says Dr. Olaf Berlien, Chairman of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp Technologies AG. Based on the existing key activities of the individual shipyards, the new group will concentrate on four product areas: submarines, naval ships, civilian ships and repairs. The locations Hamburg, Emden and Kiel will each be developed into centers of excellence with clearly defined product responsibility. This will safeguard the locations long-term and create a balanced development perspective.

Saab Awaits ASC Ruling

Swedish defense group Saab AB said it understood the Australian government wished to negotiate about Saab's stake in the Australian Submarine Corporation (ASC), though it had not been officially informed. Saab acquired the 49 percent ASC stake during a consolidation of the Swedish defense industry last year. As part of the shake-up Saab intends to transfer the holding to Germany's Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW), a major producer of conventionally powered submarines which now controls the Swedish Kockums naval shipyard. "We understand the Australian government has taken a decision to negotiate with us about the ASC stake, which they have a pre-emptive right to do," Saab senior executive vice-president Lars Josefsson said.

European Commission Clears Take Over of HDW

The European Commission has authorized the proposed acquisition of the German submarine producer Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) by the American banking company, Bank One Corporation. The Commission's investigation confirmed that the operation will not create anti-competitive effects, as the transaction will not result in any overlaps between the parties' activities in the European Union. The Commission's careful investigation has also failed to establish any links between Bank One and any US defense group with respect to the acquisition of HDW nor were there any indications that other companies were involved in the financing of the acquisition.

AES wins Navy Contract

Atlantec Enterprise Solutions has received an SBIR award from the U.S. Office of Naval Research for its proposal entitled "Connector Architecture for CAD and CAM Systems." In this project Atlantec-es will work with Electric Boat Corporation, Groton, CT and Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG in Germany to develop an open connector architecture that decouples CAD and CAM software applications. The solution promises to dramatically reduce implementation costs and provide greater flexibility when selecting best of breed CAD and CAM systems. It will also simplify and streamline the information infrastructure typically required to support shipyard production processes.

HDW Stake to go to MAN unit

A unit of Germany's MAN AG reportedly confirmed to a major news agency that it would buy a 15 percent stake in Howaldtswerke- Deutsche Werft (HDW) by October 1. The move follows a surprise takeover of the shipyard by U.S.-based One Equity Partners last month who freed the yard from the control of ailing engineering firm Babcock Borsig. The head of MAN unit Ferrostaal AG, reportedly told a news conference that the firm agreed to buy a 15 percent stake offered by One Equity soon after it gained control of 75 percent of HDW's shares. HDW is the world's leading producer of non-nuclear submarines. One Equity said it bought the controlling stake as a financial investment.

Alfa Laval Enters Agreement with European Shipyards

The supplier frame agreement is made between Alfa Laval and Euroship, a group of European shipyards made up of Chantiers de l’Atlantique, Alstom Marine of France, Fincantieri S. p. A. of Italy, Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft and Jos. L. Meyer Werft of Germany and Izar Construcciones Navales S. A. of Spain. The frame agreement covers supplies of fuel oil and lube oil separator modules for the new constructions built at the Euroship yards. The aim is to co-ordinate standards between Alfa Laval and Euroship so that supplies can be specified and shipped according to agreed standards, thereby improving delivery times and lowering costs for all parties involved.
