Sri Lanka’s government on Saturday signed a long-delayed agreement to sell a 70% stake in a USD 1.5-billion port to China in a bid to recover from the heavy burden of repaying a Chinese loan obtained to build the facility, report local media. After 10 years of negotiations, China Merchants Port Holdings has signed the agreement with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority to develop the Hambantota Port in southern Sri Lanka. New China-built Sri Lanka Container Terminal to Rival Majors
The newly-opened $500 million Chinese-built Colombo terminal is situated about mid-way on the important East/West shipping route and is claimed to have facilities on a par with Singapore and Dubai. CICT Sri Lanka Container Terminal Opens
China Merchant Holdings International (CMHI) subsidiary Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) put the new terminal into trial operation mode with the arrival of the first ship to dock there, the 'M/V Coromandel'. CMHI owns an 85% interest in CICT, there will be altogether 4 berths and a quay length of 1200 meters, with a designed handling capacity of 2.4 million TEU, the first phase project covers 400 meters quay length. China Merchants' Guestimate Container Terminal Growth
China Merchants Holdings (International) Company recently held its AGM in Hong Kong and the Vice-Chairman predicted figures in the company's container terminal operation interests. The Company's Vice Chairman Li Jianhong, Managing Director Hu Jianhua, Deputy Managing Director Zheng Shaoping and Deputy General Manager & CFO Zhang Rizhong were interviewed by journalists after the AGM.
