Crew Winched to Safety Near Skegness
Two people have been winched to safety after their vessel suffered engine failure and began to take on water, the U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency reported. The call came in as a Mayday to Humber Coastguard Operation Centre at 7:36 a.m. (BST) today from the Dolphin of Rhu, north of the windfarm between Skegness and the River Humber. Calculating the boat’s position had to be done using VHF direction finding because there seemed to be no GPS and two lifeboats – Humber and Skegness were tasked to find the vessel. Other vessels on the scene also came in to help the search. It was also decided to call in the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter from Humberside because of the potentially serious nature of the incident.
2 Rescued Near Humber Bridge by Maritime & Coastguard Agency
Humber Coastguard received a call just after 10am this morning reporting two people in the water after their powered canoe had capsized just west of the Humber Bridge. The Hull Coastguard Rescue Team, Humber Rescue Inshore Lifeboat and the police all attended and found one of the boat’s occupants clinging to his companion, who was the only one wearing a lifejacket. The RAF search and rescue helicopter from Leconfield lifted the very cold canoeists aboard; they were put ashore and taken to Hull Royal Infirmary, where they were confirmed as well. Humber Coastguard Watch Manager, Graham Dawson, said, "Anyone taking to the water should always wear their own properly maintained life jacket or buoyancy aid.
MCA Reports Vessel Aground
On Monday, Humber Coastguard were advised by Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) Humber that the German registered 2,551 ton general cargo vessel ‘Urte’, with a cargo of scrap metal had gone aground at the entrance to the River Trent. The vessel, which had eight crew members and a pilot on board, sustained damage to the bow. A tug was on the scene by early Tuesday morning. The VTS Humber reported the situation had deteriorated, the vessel had taken a sixteen degree list and was taking water over the port quarter. Humber private rescue launched and took all personnel off and landed them at Blacktoft Jetty on the River Ouse. Hull Coastguard was also in attendance.
