China Launches Energy Efficient VLCC

CS Hunan Venture very large crude carrier, dubbed one of the most advanced and energy-efficient VLCCs ever built in China, was recently launched by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Group (DSIC).The vessel is owned by China Shipbuilding Consulting Company and operated by Wah Kwong Ship Management Hong Kong.Fan Qiang, Vice President of China Classification Society which conducted extensive survey of the vessel, said the CS Hunan Venture’s innovative design means its Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) is more than 20pc below the baseline…

Coastal Passenger Ferry for China

The Zhoushan Islands are just off shore of east China's Zhejiang province, and lie south of Shanghai on Hangzhou Bay. The main island is home to a naval base, shipyards and a port. It is a busy island with a well-developed ferry system carrying both people and vehicles back and forth to the mainland. A fine new 690-passenger ferry, Zhoushan Islands Prosperity, has recently been added to this fleet of vessels. It is the largest ferry to date from the Hunan Xiangchuan Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd.

New China-Europe Intermodal Route Opened

Marking the opening of a new China-Europe freight train route a freight train left Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, heading for Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan.According to a report in Xinhua, the train consists of 42 containers loaded with laptops, LED panels, green tea and other products manufactured in Hunan province.With this service, Zhuzhou has become the third city in Hunan Province to open international freight train route to Europe after Changsha and Huaihua.The train will leave China through the Horgos Pass in Xinjiang and pass Kazakhstan before reaching its destination.The whole trip will take seven days…

COSCO Shipping Bulk Sets Sail

The world's largest bulk vessel fleet in terms of both ship numbers and deadweight tonnage COSCO Shipping Bulk Co is officially launched in Guangzhou. Its a merger between two companies - COSCO Bulk Carrier Co and China Shipping Bulk Carrier Co. According to a report in China.org, with a total of 382 self-operated and controlled bulk vessels and a capacity of 34.58 million deadweight tons, COSCO Shipping Bulk will be able to ship iron ore, coal, grain and other commodities to more than 1,000 ports in some 100 countries and regions. Its annual freight volume will exceed 340 million metric tons. It now has 18,500 employees, including 13,000 mariners. The average ship age in its fleet is eight years.

PSA International Ventures into South-Western China

PSA International (PSA) established itself as the first and only Global Terminal Operator in the Guangxi-Beibu Gulf region by signing a Joint Venture Agreement with Beibu Gulf Port Group (BPG) and Pacific International Lines (PIL) to operate a new container terminal in Qinzhou City (Guangxi Province, China) - BEIBU GULF-PSA International Container Terminal Co., Ltd (BPCT). The joint venture terminal is PSA’s first foray in the South-Western China region – one of the fastest growing economic regions in China. Accessible to Southeast Asia by land and sea, the region has been earmarked by the Chinese government as a key area for coastal development and collaboration with ASEAN countries.

Divers Comb Capsized China Ship, Hopes Fade

Death toll more than doubles to 19, more than 400 missing. Rescuers searched a sunken cruise ship in the Yangtze River on Wednesday for more than 400 missing people, many of them elderly, but hopes of finding more survivors were fading in what could be China's worst shipping disaster in almost 70 years. State television showed rescuers, some standing gingerly on the upturned hull of the Eastern Star, and scores of divers working through the night. Only 14 people, including the ship's captain, have been found alive since the ship capsized in a freak tornado on Monday night with 456 people on board. Just 19 bodies have been recovered. Rescuers have not slackened off, even though about 200 divers face difficulties such as cabin doors blocked by tables and beds.

China, Taiwan, Reach Important Cross-Straits Shipping Agreements

A series of economic cooperation agreements have been reached by Chinese mainland and Taiwan at a recent meeting, reports Xinhua. The mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits and its counterpart in Taiwan have concluded their two day's talk in South China's Hunan city. The two have agreed open new ship routes across the strait and to symplify customs procedure for commercially efficient transportation. The meeting is aimed to boost confidence of the development of  cross-strait relations between the two countries.

Chongqing Guoyuan Port, a crucial shipping centre in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, has recently been put into use. With an annual through capacity of 300 billion tons, it will be connected with Yuxin'ou (Chongqing-Xinjiang-Europe) International Railway, via which cargo from the lower reaches of the Yangtze River in eastern and central China can be transported to Europe.
