UKHO Brings ECDIS Seminars to North America

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) will offer its free ‘Living with ECDIS’ seminars in Vancouver, Canada on Tuesday, November 29 and in Houston, U.S. on Thursday, December 1. Following on from the latest ECDIS usage figures, published earlier this year by the UKHO, which revealed that 59 percent of the global SOLAS fleet is now ECDIS-ready, the UKHO’s seminar is designed to ensure that the navigational benefits of ECDIS are achieved in an efficient and compliant manner.

WFSA Ferry Design Competition: University Team Wins

The World Ferry Safety Association (WFSA) has announced the results of its Second Annual international student design competition for a Safe Affordable Ferry. The goal of the design competition is to elicit new approaches for ferry design in the developing world as well as to encourage designers to enter this arena for which there is a need and a developing market. USCG to Establish Security Zone for Republican Conference

The U.S. Coast Guard will establish a temporary security zone Wednesday to Friday in designated waters of the Choptank River for the Republican Issues Conference. The security zone will be in effect from 3 a.m. Wednesday until 1 p.m. Friday, which may limit or prohibit navigation by commercial and recreational waterway users. The security zone will include a 500-yard perimeter surrounding the waterfront of the Hyatt Regency Hotel on the Choptank River in Cambridge. The security zone will also impact waterway traffic under the Route 50 Bridge for various periods of time. Entering or operating in the security zone is prohibited unless authorized by the captain of the port of Coast Guard Sector Baltimore.

Surface Warriors to Meet at Annual Symposium

The Surface Navy Association (SNA) National Symposium will be held January 15-17, 2013, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Crystal City, VA. The association was incorporated in 1985 to promote greater coordination and communication among those in the military, business and academic communities who share a common interest in Naval Surface Warfare and to support the activities of Surface Naval Forces. CNO Delivers Keynote at FAPAC Conference

Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Gary Roughead delivered the keynote address at the 26th annual Federal Asian Pacific American Council (FAPAC) conference at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Bellevue, Wash., May 10. Roughead addressed the audience and spoke about the importance of FAPAC to the Navy. MTS Meeting Set for Long Beach

On August 13-14, the Marine Transportation System National Advisory Council (MTSNAC) is scheduled to consider an industry proposal to upgrade the nation's marine infrastructure. Commending the Council's work, Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Most trade analysts agree that international trade will at least double by the year 2020 triggering surface transportation gridlock.
