Wärtsilä Partners to Develop Hybrid Dredger
Wärtsilä has signed a strategic development agreement with Chinese state-owned shipbuilder CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company Limited Huangpu Wenchong. The five year agreement is aimed at the joint development of a hybrid powered dredger, but could possibly extend to other hybrid vessels as well. Korean Register Opens Green-ship Certification Center
The Korean Register informs it has formally opened the Green-ship Equipment Test Certification Center in Gunsan, Jeonbuk, Korea. This large-scale facility will be operated by KR and has been built with the full support of Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the governments of Gunsan City and Jeolla-buk province. In recent years, KR, an IACS member classification society, has been developing eco-friendly technologies through collaboration on a range of R&D activities with marine equipment manufacturers. The creation of this new international-level facility enables KR to carry out testing and evaluation beyond its routine R&D work and establishes a firm base from which to lead the international standardization of eco-friendly vessels.

Green-ship Certification Center Opens in Korea
Announced in 2012 as the world’s first green-ship equipment certification center, The Korean Register – an IACS member class society, and founding partner in the project –announced that the center has opened for business earlier this month in Gunsan, Jeonbuk, Korea. Costing a total of $29.4 million (30 billion won), the new center will test, evaluate and certify green-ship equipment. KR Directs Build of Green Equipment Certification Center
The Korean Register, an IACS member classification society, is leading a project to build and operate the world’s first green-ship equipment certification center in Gunsan, Jeonbuk, Korea which is due to open in February 2014. Work is already underway and the new $269 million won facility is being constructed with the full support of the Korean Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, the local government and various research institutes. The project has been created in response to IMO’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction and maritime pollution regulations and will enable KR to lead the way in certifying essential green-ship components, including engines.
Houston Hybrid RTG's to Install Saft Li-ion Batteries
Saft contracted by MJ EcoPower Hybrid Systems to supply leading-edge lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries for four new hybrid-powered mobile RTG (Rubber Tyred Gantry) cranes serving Houston Harbor, Texas. The contract is an important breakthrough for Saft in the US hybrid RTG crane market that is set for growth as operators seek to drive down their fuel costs while reducing emissions. There are up to 600 existing RTG cranes in US harbors that could potentially be retrofitted with hybrid power systems, while around 150 new cranes are built every year for the global market. RTGs play an important logistics role in ports and harbors, where they are used to transport and stack shipping containers during ship loading and unloading.
New Energy Consumption Tools for US MEF's Developed
Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD) engineers are developing tools to enable U.S. Marine Expeditionary Forces (MEFs) to more accurately predict energy consumption needs in theater. NSWC PCD Expeditionary Systems Division (Code E30) engineers were asked by Marine Corps Systems Command (MARCORSYCOM) to reduce the energy consumption of Marine Corps Combat Operations Centers (COCs). MARCORSYCOM acquires and provides life-cycle support of ground weapon and information technology (IT) systems for U.S. Marines.
RailPower/OTB Supply and Licensing Agreement
