There is growing concern regarding the environmental impact and associated costs of petroleum based fluid discharges. Petroleum is persistent and toxic. It damages living organisms including plants, animals and marine life for many years. While many believe that the bulk of this environmental damage is done by major spills, such as the Exxon Valdez or the Deepwater Horizon events, in reality, every spill matters. China Firm Obtains MHI Deck Crane License

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) signs an agreement allowing STX Construction (Dalian) to produce & market marine deck cranes. Through licensing to this company member of the STX group, which has shipyards in Korea, China and Europe, MHI aims to accelerate global market penetration of its technology-based marine deck cranes. The deck cranes to be licensed are two models, currently on the market, having a 30-ton hoisting capacity and a working radius of up to 26 and 28 meters, respectively.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) signs to allow the Korean company, SPP Machine Tech, to produce & market its cranes. The deck cranes to be licensed are two models, currently on the market, having a 36-ton hoisting capacity and a working radius of up to 26 and 28 meters, respectively. MHI will supply components for the cranes, including hydraulic machinery, to SPP Machine Tech. With this initiative, MHI aims at accelerating market penetration of MHI technology-based marine deck cranes in Korea. Before this, MHI licensed the technology to Jiangsu Masada Heavy Industries Co, Ltd.

Rapp Hydema Wins Winch Contract for Fishery Survey Vessel

Rapp Hydema has closed a major contract with STX Finland Oy Shipyard related to a new research vessel. The Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources selected STX Finland Oy to build new hull, No. 1378, which will undertake fishery survey missions. Distinctive for recent orders is an admixture of both electric and hydraulic machinery. Hydraulically-powered machinery includes the Rapp trawl winches. Also, a double net-drum is to be utilized for net storage, and Rapp is also providing a Gilson winch, as well as a Research/Sounder Winch. A Rapp anchor winch with two capstans is also to be provided, as well as two separate hydraulic power packs for the anchor/capstans package and the fishing winches.The trawl winches are to be controlled by a PTS Pentagon Cbus F system…

F/V Pinnacle Delivered by Tri-Star Marine

Jensen Maritime Consultants, Inc. (JMC), recently completed the design for new 140 x 38 ft. F/V Pinnacle. The Seattle naval architecture firm designed the new vessel for Walt Casto of Snohomish, Wash. Tri-Star Marine, Seattle, delivered the vessel to the owner in February 1999. In late 1997, Walt Casto met with HMC to discuss the prospects of building a new vessel. The original Pinnacle, built at Homeport Marine Services, Moss Point, Miss. in 1991, was to be sold to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game as a fisheries patrol vessel. Casto wanted to replace the existing vessel with a JMC design of similar capacity and length. A previous 114 ft. JMC design was used as a basis and significantly expanded and modified to fit the design parameters.
